This argument lost a ton of it's momentum when Ridley became playable. But the archenemy of Samus isn't the only character people have shot down in speculation due to being "too big".
Kraid and Hades come to mind, I saw someone say once that Pig Ganon is too big (I assume they were too focused on the size of Dark Beast Ganon in BOTW), and I myself wondered about Metal Face for a time until I saw him working just fine in a mod.
I do think there is such a thing as being too big in terms of being too long, like how even if you shrink down Rayquaza the way it's body elongates as it moves just doesn't flow right for a playable character, but otherwise I have been against the "too big" argument for a very long time.
And one of the most common points people who were on that side of the debate used was how Bowser was shrunken down for Mario Kart.
So if the roster of playable guest characters in the next Mario Kart game had some of those characters people have used this argument against, that would be really funny.
