One of the biggest problems I have with "if Smash was made today" rosters is the fact that the impact Smash had on gaming was so big that it can be hard to differentiate between characters that are iconic because of their own games and which ones are iconic because of Smash. Take Fox for instance, sure the Star Fox franchise had a good handful of games, but it's been pretty dormant recently. Even then, a lot of Star Fox fans were probably introduced to the series through Smash Bros. Another example is with Ness. The only game to make it out of Japan did terribly in North America. But Smash Bros introduced the character to a ton of people. Without it, we may not have gotten the "quirky Earthbound-inspired RPG." and games like Undertale wouldn't exist. Smash Bros not existing until today opens up a whole can of worms that I'd honestly like to see explored more. An in-depth look at what gaming and pop-culture would like honestly fascinates me.
