When did the "usual" reaction to puns become extreme anger? Does anyone actually not like puns or is it just part of the meme? In addition, why are good puns called bad puns? IMO, bad puns usually have nothing to do with the situation at hand or make absolutely no sense.
For example, there was a conversation about a kid swearing, and he said, "sorry, Sonic forces me to swear," despite the fact that the conversation had had nothing to do with Sonic or Sonic Forces. And for another one, there was a glass blowing competition show where one of the judges was talking about a piece and how an aspect of it was kind of cliche and "isn't going to cut it," which she then followed up with "isn't going to cliche it." When those words pretty much sound nothing like eachother. These I feel are really "bad puns."
Which is why 99% of the emulation, mod, and fangame scene is western based - It's a lot easier to do over here when there's a more healthy outlook on it and the realization that "Hey, this isn't linked to piracy or copyright infringement intrinsically. It's a tool that can be used innocently for educational, hobbyist, and preservationist efforts." We also have a LOT of people in our corner compared to Nintendo's nowadays (most notably Linus Tech Tips is a HUGE supporter of legal emulation via ROM dumping, and he has a legal team behind him).
The environment over in Japan is pretty much that they think it's all illegal no matter what, and the ONLY instance where it isn't is if the original creators give exact, specific permission amidst legal notices and creative work guidelines.
