In a recent interview with the Washington Post, Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai was asked about his thoughts on Smash’s competitive scene and its status as an esport, as well as how he’s taking this into account while developing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

This past weekend we saw the return of one of the greatest Project M tournament series since its development shut down, the Bigger Balc series. With 427 attendees, the tournament marked a new high for the ambitious Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod, and the tournament itself was even streamed on Twitch, a task many other PM tournaments have shied away from in recent years. While the organization and attention the tournament received definitely made a statement on their own, the results had a lot to say as well.

The Showdown Battle Royale tournament series’ third iteration will run on July 14th and 15th at the Radisson Hotel in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Showdown Battle Royale has been one of the Midwest’s largest fighting game series since 2016, attracting competitors worldwide

Nintendo announced that Kirby: Star Allies will get its summer update on July 27th, with Daroach, Dark Meta Knight, and Adeleine & Ribbon as playable dream friends.

Panda Global Stats (PGStats) announced on Twitter that they will be taking charge of the Super Smash Bros. Melee ranking system. Working alongside the Melee It On Me (MIOM) team, they are set to produce the next top 50 ranking through a series of published articles, the first of which is set to be released on July 23rd. Melee rankings will continue to be released twice a year.

The new Make Your Mark series will award winners with the ability to create a unique character skin with the Rivals of Aether game developers.

Reception for the tournament’s new venue has generally been overwhelmingly positive. Unfortunately, racist behavior displayed by several Daytona locals managed to ruin the air for many attendees.

This year’s CEO Fighting Game Championship is scheduled for June 29th-July 1st at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. Ultimate demo at the venue’s Nintendo booth.

Last night, the 42nd People's Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles, California at the Microsoft Theatre on CBS. Although most of the awards were about television and movies, there was an award for the people's "Favorite Video Game". In the end, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U won the award over Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Congratulations to Nintendo and the Smash Bros. team, and thank you to all Smashers who voted for Smash Bros.!

Sol, the fan favorite Little Mac main, now has a new sponsor! On December 31st, 2015, Noble eSports, a high professional eSports organization, announced that Sol would be their first Smash Bros. pro.

Another Smash 4 player has been signed in eSports today with @M@v now being a part of True Ambition! Mav is currently power ranked as number one in the Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh) power rankings and is a member of the Smash 4 Backroom here on Smashboards and regularly places high in events locally as well as in Ohio.

After a small tease by SFAT and PewPewU, Counter Logic Game officially announced that SFAT would be joining there team on twitter. SFAT is currently ranked number two in NorCal's power rankings and has impressive placements such as CEO 2015 (9th), Evo 2015 (17th), HTC Throwdown (7th), and The Big House 5 (7th). This also means that one of the most famous teams of Melee, 'PewFat', will now be under the banner of CLG!
