  • My stance on the "are there good 3D Sonic games?" debate:

There are good 3D games that feature Sonic

There are good 3D games that play like Sonic

But there's yet to be a good 3D Sonic game - in the sense of a game that features Sonic and plays like Sonic.

The stage design is close, but no (or at the very most downplayed) momentum physics. Doesn't qualify in my eyes.

Eh, I much prefer 2D Sonic anyways.
I love Colors and have a nostalgic soft spot for Heroes but that's pretty much all the 3D Sonic I've ever cared for

-Sonic gets progressively faster as he walks and breaks into a jog before leaning into a full run, and running up and down slopes increases and decreases this speed respectively.
-Jump is very floaty and feels nice, just as it did in the classics
-Spindash jumping is a very fun exploit that can skip considerable chunks of levels, and isn't a glitch but rather an intended mechanic. To use it well, the player has to know the curvature surface that they are standing to use it well
-The air dash (homing attack without the homing or the attack) gets you a little bit more distance yet killing your momentum, fun risk-reward mechanic
-Controls can feel wonky at high speeds (definitely most notable in Speed Highway and Windy Valley), but the Spindash does a good job in helping you maintain this speed and correct your direction
I don't know if I would go as far to call it a "momentum based platformer" but Sonic certainly feels like Sonic. (But that's assuming classic Sonic is the only "true" Sonic and no other kind of game is allowed to have a Sonic that feels like Sonic, but I digress)
Listen out to me on this concept:

A Smash-sized gaming crossover - exclusively featuring cute platformer mascots, "Scrimblo Bimblos" if you will. The game is a 3D platforming foot-racer a la Rayman M.

I'm writing Gex quotes for fighting every Smash fighter. I honestly doubt a Smash game would contain lines like "just like House, but without the raging acephobia" and “This must be the strange alien race who find Justin Roiland screaming funny.” but people said the same about Bayonetta getting undressed in the middle of a battle so you never know.

Jokes aside, it'd be pretty rad if Nintendo could release some of their smaller releases on PS and XB. Odyssey, Ultimate, SwSh, or BoTW are obvious no-goes, but something like Advance Wars Re-Boot Camp; New Pokémon Snap or even Get it Together would be a cool little novelty for collectors and sneaky prod for rival console fans to try out the Switch.

A while ago I’ve had a weird idea that Microsoft and Nintendo should sort of “combine” Xbox Live Gold and Nintendo Switch Online so that you only have to pay for one and get all the benefits of the other one. Xbox users would be able to play NES/SNES games and Switch users would be able to play some select gamepass games for free. Obviously it wouldn’t happen but it would be cool.

No, no, no! Nintendo must make their own hardware so that their games are optimized for it.
Going third party would compromise the quality that comes from software manufacturers making their own hardware.
This and the new Looney Tunes Cartoons alone would really tempt me to get HBO Max if we had it over here.

Can't wait to see right wing YouTubers throw a fit over female Jabberjaw, acting is if they - scratch that - anyone cared about Jabberjaw before that beyond just the CN Groovies song by Pain.
The whole "gross Wario vs. macho Wario" debate is kinda ridiculous because "gross Wario" didn't just appear out of nowhere and "macho Wario" never went away. I've got a whole compilation of examples or pre-Ware Wario being vulnerable; gross; or goofy here (it was basically the main gameplay mechanic of 2, 3, and 4) - and there's also plenty of examples of Wario being tough and gruff - sometimes even using the Shoulder Bash - in Ware.

Sure, these are all ficticous games in-universe, but at the same time treasure hunting and immense strength are still extremely recurrant elements of Wario's character in WarioWare, even when compared to other common situations Wario is in in microgames such as being aged down or being an egg.
I had a dream where my toenail got ripped off, I ate the bloody toenail, and immediately after someone leaked a Kumatora amiibo that was clearly fake because it used a fan model one of my friends uses a lot, but somehow it really spread and NintendoLife were talking about it.
    We live in a society😔
That new Scooby/Courage crossover has got me thinking about how D2V movies would be the perfect way for CN (and Nick) to revive and reintroduce their 90s and 2000s characters. That way they're not stealing talent or airtime from new concepts, and thanks to both, infrequent releases and longer lengths, concept burnout will come much slower than if they were to make a weekly series while burdened with the task of not repeating concepts from the original series.
If you're part of a younger generation and never heard of Nintendogs it must be super weird to see a realistic dog come out of the Assist Trophy and take up the entire screen.

I think there's more than enough assist trophies that go over most people's heads.
How many people besides the Nintendo nerds are likely to know anything about the Sable Prince, Sukapon, Gnat Attack, or even the Arcade Bunny? And then of course there's Color-TV-Game, who most people are just gonna think is Pong (I mean it technically is, but you know what I mean).
But this is exactly why I love the assist trophies. They give excellent representation to some crazy stuff we'd probably never care much about otherwise. I really wish Smash had what Fraymakers is gonna have with the assists being a primary part of the game.
I still wish Dream Land GB ended up being a crossover between multiple Game Boy games like the POTD said it would.

Here's a list of games and levels I'd include:
    Super Mario Land: Muda
    Pokémon Red and Blue: Battle
    Kirby's Dream Land: Castle Lololo
    Wario Land: Rice Beach
    Mole Mania: Beach
    Metroid 2: Surface
    Link's Awakening: Wind Fish
There are many things I desire to be known as when I get into indie game development, but the highest is "that one indie dev who's extremely adament his characters should never ever be in Smash Bros."

If you ever see my game's star, Daniel, in a Smash trailer - expect it to be a fake-out for a character nobody asked for.

Yes, my planned gamedev name is a Simpsons reference.
Why do people compare Sonic to Dragon Ball? Like yeah, they have blonde, over-gelled super forms but that's about it when it comes to the similarities. One's an environmentalist fable about super-cool wisecracking furries saving innocent animals from being made into robot slaves, the other is an action-packed epic about morally dubious super-humans fighting to see who's the strongest and saving the universe along the way.

I think it's also the parallels between some of the characters, too: Sonic and Goku are the chipper and powerful protagonists, Shadow and Vegeta are the edgy rival characters, and Silver and Trunks are the naïve time travellers from a doomed future.
    Glubbfubb
    Glubbfubb
Sonic and Goku have contrasting elements to their personalities that gives them flaws, Goku is more naive which can lead to some major troubles (the cell senzu bean and universe tournament for example) but his upfront kindness and childlike innocence allows him to make allies out of former foes like Vegeta and give him the streghth to continue fighting, Sonic is more knowledgable he knows that his enemies are causing trouble and acts for the benefit of the greater good, however he is also cocky and this cockiness led to many different situations (such as being transformed into the werehog and having tails being captured by the deadly six) so in the end the former is innocnent which makes him a more prone to common mistakes and the other is more prone to being blinded by his own cocky attitude
I wouldn't be as opposed to Shadow as I am if we got Tails first, and I'd be completely indifferent on him if Tails, Knux, and Eggman were already in.

It's kinda like my thoughts on Rosalina, on her own she's not a bad choice, but her getting in before Daisy was a tiny brain move, and I'm still a little sour she gets her own moveset but Daisy doesn't get as much as a changed stat.

As terms of who I expect to make it into smash the most
Eggman > Tails > Shadow > Knuckles for Ultimate.
Eggman > Shadow > Tails > Knuckles for Smash 6 whenever that happens.

As for why I think this because I feel like rambling:
With Ultimate's love of villains, I would expect Eggman to get in the game before any of them. Especially since Eggman is more important than all of them since he's literally in every single Sonic game and plays at least a somewhat big role in all of them, and is the main antagonist in a lot of them.

After that it gets harder to decide.
Tails has been around the most obviously. He's sonic's number 2. The Luigi to Mario. So it makes sense. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai saw him and thought he would be better as an assist trophy though. Tails often plays a support role in many games.

Knuckles has been around almost as long as Tails. However after his first couple games he's just kind of there. Which unfortunately happens to a lot of cool Sonic characters, but hey at least they get remembered. He'd be a great pick if you wanted to specifically make the retro 2D fans happy, which is what made Sonic popular in the first place.

Shadow is the newest, but he debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 which is what a lot of Sonic fans claim to be one of the better Sonic games. Then he gets a lot of special treatment in games where he plays a pretty large role. Probably be the best pick if you wanted to make the 3D fans happy. Also I maybe biased towards Shadow a lot, as he is my most wanted out of the Sonic characters. I stopped playing the Sonic games around SA2, Sonic Heroes and Sonic 6 were newish (also he got his own game). Where he has extremely important roles to the story as well. I do glance at the Sonic games from time to time though.

Gameplay-wise all 4 of the characters could be incredibly interesting in their own ways and they can do whatever they want with the gameplay. So I don't think gameplay helps or hinders any of their chances to get in over another.

However I find it extremely unlikely Knux or Edgy the Hedgy will get into Ultimate because they are assist trophies. Not a disconfirmation but it certainly doesn't help their chances. So maybe next game.
This is a hot take, but I honestly feel Pokémon doesn't have enough Smash fighters, and what is there is seriously lacking in variety.
Considering that the Amico's main selling point is that it only allows E and E10+ games, Earthworm Jim is a weird choice for a "killer app" as, while not exactly on the level of Conker or even Gex, Jim was known for innuendoes, gross-out, and having scuffles with Nintendo's censors - and his creator is somewhat notorious for opposing quote-unquote "SJW censorship".
I say this a lot and it's probably getting super annoying to hear about from me every 5 seconds, but seriously: why do we never discuss Paula as a potential echo candidate? She is absolute perfect echo material - same body shape, different silhouette, same powers, and comes from a series that probably should be represented more but not to the point of a completely new third fighter.
    Torgo the Bear
    Torgo the Bear
Technically, most of Ness's powers in Smash belong to Paula in the first place. I'd love to see her, although personally I'm still holding onto some hope that we get Porky (mostly cause I love the idea of playing as a character who pilots a mech. Bowser Jr. isn't quite there...)

Regardless, I can't help but feel like if we got a Mother echo it would be Ninten, and that would kinda mess his character up since he's not supposed to be able to use any offensive PSI techniques...
DK's stage representation in Smash is so weird to me - jungles are only really that heavily featured in 3 of the main DK platformers (DKC, DK64, and DKCR), yet they take up all but one of DK's stages. Why not use the crystal mines? the neon pirate theme park? the bramble maze in the sky? the balloon-filled lava cavern? the pirate ship's stormy mainbrace? the giant beehive? and those are from one game alone! DK is a series that lives and dies on atmosphere so having every DK stage be in a jungle and a majority of the music be either jazzy jungle music or a boss theme makes them seem more like a representation of Donkey Kong merchandise than Donkey Kong itself.
