Welcome to 2016, folks! It's time for another volume in The State of Smash 4. This series, as per usual, takes an in-depth, comprehensive look into Smash 4's competitive game and recaps all of the major events and developments of the past month. 2015's final month brought a variety of developments to Smash 4, and major things to come. The premier Dutch tournament series Avalon is looking to kick off 2016 with a bang, with more entrants and competition than ever. Avalon M-II is shaping out to be the first tournament since DreamHack Winter 2015 where top talent from multiple European countries will be facing off, making it a tournament not to be missed.

While Sakurai's own creation during his transition from Smash 64 to Melee it seems Kirby lost a bit of his spunk. He currently is considered the worst character in Melee being ranked 26th on the Melee Tier List. 2016 is here and Week 14's Top 5 Smash Shorts continues on course. This week's Weekly Top 5 Smash Shorts video brings us some fun combos from the Earthbound duo as well as some classic Mario on Bowser action.

Last night, the 42nd People's Choice Awards took place in Los Angeles, California at the Microsoft Theatre on CBS. Although most of the awards were about television and movies, there was an award for the people's "Favorite Video Game". In the end, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U won the award over Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V, Batman: Arkham Knight, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Congratulations to Nintendo and the Smash Bros. team, and thank you to all Smashers who voted for Smash Bros.!

It is safe to say that 2015 was a massive year for Super Smash Bros. Wii U from both a competitor and spectators point of view. In 2015 we saw more major tournaments than ever before and also got to witness the rise of players such as TSM ZeRo, Liquid` Nairo, and many more who were all able to show off the games enormous competitive potential.

But something often overlooked but just as important is knowing what stages to pick and the benefits and disadvantages of stages in competitive play. The UK has one of the largest Smash scenes in Europe and, though it has seen periods of relative isolation, has always provided the international competition with fierce challengers in various Smash titles. This started back when American Melee player The Doug lived in the UK and was one of the best in Europe, before passing the torch to household names like Fuzzyness and Professor Pro. Over the years, the British scene expanded into Brawl, Project M and Smash 4 and to this day features both mixed and dedicated events that draw in local and foreign attendance. Some of their moments of glory in 2015 were Professor Pro's win over Hungrybox and J.Miller's victory at BEAST V.
