Hey, I'm looking to try playing Pikachu, any suggestions for starters? I saw a guide on here, but it's from '04, so I'm not sure how helpful it'd be. I know some of the basics, but I was wondering if there's a better guide available or anything I should know before I just start experimenting. Thanks.

In the "normal ledge canceled up b" do you usually jump first? If not it's just a lot harder than it looks.
oh, umm I like to, cause it gives me more time to let go of diagonally down and in incase I mess up, otherwise you gotta be perfect, but you don't have to jump, but your right, it is a little harder

and as for the guide, thats the only one I know of someone should really refurbish that. And I know n64 was planing on making a new matchup guide like a year ago (shakes fist)

Um pikachu from what I know (I haven't played as pikachu in like a year he is my worse) pikachu is about random running around and punishing(lack of of a better word) also full hop running B sets up combos. other than that I could just tell you simple combos it's more metal than tech skill I guess.

Oh should nearly never get edge guarded to death because if you do your doing something very wrong if your edge gaurded a bunch. I mean as pichu(whos up-B is slower) I can go right though marth's f-smash and him miss even when there is only one or 2 ways to recover.

The guide is still decent for beginners.

Things you should practice are sweet spotting the edge with quick attack, quick attack edgehog, spacing out your moves, chain grabbing the spacies, and falcon. Usmashing out of shield, learning your follow ups, and light shielding, always remember to light shield. Wavedashing out of shield is good too.

There's nothing wrong with jumping before UpBing if you're doing the offstage UpB annoyance thing, since you SHOULD be getting back to the edge before they do anyway.

Yes jump when you're on the stage before UpBing out then to the ledge. Gives you a better angle and your height + distance from the edge can be adjusted accordingly to always grab it easily.

Also, going to the edge is always a very safe option with every character when coming from above and in danger.

hey guys! sorry i haven't posted lately, i actually took a trip to texas, and i went to a small tourney over there =) and thanks to the amazingness of pikachu, i ended up taking first lol. here's winner's finals vids. hopefully grand finals and other ones will be up soon, but idk lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjlSGPP14bY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZodEnnxY1E
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCXbKpT0BXg <--- i went falco this match, so you can skip if you don't feel like watching a falco ditto

anyways, about the up-b to the edge...

basically, you CAN jump if you want to, but it's not necessary. HOWEVER, it IS necessary if you want to sweetspot when you're standing closer to the edge

if you practice enough, while you're standing on the stage, you can grab the edge (sweetspot the edge) by using your up b. so for example...

if you're on the left or right side of the stage, and you want to grab the edge, just do the first zip of the up-b so you go off the edge, then have the second zip go diagonally downwards towards the stage, so you grab the edge. it's VERY important that you let go of Down on the control stick, because if you keep holding down after the second zip, you will NOT grab the edge

it's kinda hard at first, because immediately after pikachu does the second zip, you have to let go of the control stick or you might bypass the edge. it just takes practice.

also....

the closer you are to the edge, the higher you have to jump before you do your up-b. so if you're very far from the edge, don't jump at all. if you're like about a wavedash's distance away, you should jump about the height of a shorthop before you start your up-b. it IS possible to sweetspot when you're in that position without jumping, but you have to do the 2nd zip at an angle that's almost horizontally backwards, but slightly downwards, and it's pretty hard to pull off. i usually just jump instead so i can do the second zip at a 45 degree angle downwards to grab the edge. just practice, and you'll get it

AXE: Only watched the pika vids, but they were legit. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them.

AXE is 222good.

Keep it up, pika will be mid tier by 2011. We just need another person or two. You get three really good puffs and everyone things they are best in game. It'll be the same with pika.

Anyone have a favorite mindgame to do with pika?

Pikachu shouldn't be any higher no joke maybe one spot but really pikachu isn't that good it's just how axe plays. I mean pikachu is mostly about running around and landing hits and smallish combos(upair does 3% so yeah smallish)he does have good edge guard and kill power but he can't do what fox does where he can try to shine spike someone and could back up with a bair if he missed or they changed up, he isn't so fast he can quickly close 2 things and there are no 100%s like marth per say.

Those are the things that seem to stick out and their still not that great.

So, guys, thunder-spiking, wtf
How does it happen?
Is there any way to make it happen or is it just random?
Could it possibly have something to do with invisible ceilings?
It happens when the person getting hit does some really weird smash DI, and that's about all I know.

I want to expect better of you, but I know not to
eh, tbh, I think Pikachu has considerably more viability than the rest of his tier. He's on the very low end of the mid tier IMO, but I think his spacey, CF, and Peach game makes him good enough in the current metagame. (not entirely sure about the peach matchup, but I seem to recall Cort having assloads of trouble with Chu's pikachu and other than that, I have nothing to go on with that matchup at a high level).

I really think it's

Top Tier: Falco/Fox/Jiggs/Sheik
Jawesome Tier: Marth/Peach/CF
Pri Goot Tier: ICs/Ganon/Doc/Samus
Mid Tier: Mario/Luigi/DK/Pikachu
Legend of Zelda ft. Roy Tier: Link/Y. Link/Roy/Zelda
Stupid Characters Who Look Cool Sometimes Tier: G&W/Mewtwo/Yoshi
Bottom Tier: Pichu/Bowser/Ness/Kirby

I think we can agree that axe resembles the top of pika's metagame atm. If axe has developed effective means of combating highier tier characters which give him the relative potential of a mid tier, then pika's potential is mid tier.

assuming:
axe's pika=top pika

if:
axe's pika= mid tier potential
then:
top pika=mid tier potential

Since the tier list is based on the assumption the characters are played at the highest level, this transitive property (although it is usually shaky) should hold true.

While I can agree with much of what you've said, I don't think pika really has to be a fox or marth to be mid tier potential. As mogwai pointed out, I think his matchups and abilities give him more competitive viability than the rest of his low tier counterparts. Further, I am under the impression that his abilities and competitive potential more closely resemble that of the current mid tier than that of the low tier. Therefore, I must contend that pika at least has potential as mid tier material.

I really think it's

Top Tier: Falco/Fox/Jiggs/Sheik
Jawesome Tier: Marth/Peach/CF
Pri Goot Tier: ICs/Ganon/Doc/Samus
Mid Tier: Mario/Luigi/DK/Pikachu
Legend of Zelda ft. Roy Tier: Link/Y. Link/Roy/Zelda
Stupid Characters Who Look Cool Sometimes Tier: G&W/Mewtwo/Yoshi
Bottom Tier: Pichu/Bowser/Ness/Kirby
That's interesting. I feel as though the additional tiers really help more clearly the express the dichotomies between characters than the current 5 tier system. On the whole I agree. I might change the placing within a tier a bit, but the tiers themselves look solid. But my experience is admittedly limited, so my opinion is neither as educated nor as weighty as many other smashers.

On my 5th 4 Loko and still ****** you.
yea, but you're wrong. Bum just doesn't play anymore, DK's still pretty good.
Idk. DK just kinda sucks. He's big and fat, limited as combo game, needs to be facing backwards to be effective and thats hard to do when you have a bad shield and get projectiles/pokes turn you around. I dunno, I think pika is way more versatile with a better gimp game, recovery and a projectile... just imo tho.

Axe should have beaten Armada on Battlefield, IMO. He screwed up the end of a death combo.

I argee about the DK thing but that's about it. pikachu is limited like think what's the best thing about him? I would say movement, recovery and edge gaurd. But pikachu can't take hits really(most people can chain throw him and he takes more hitstun than like 90% of the cast I believe) plus his lack approach and really bad sheild the fact he has nothing really specail about him.

1. ICG, you say it yourself your insane, and it is appearent to me your wrong about pika being bad. Like I don't think pika is high tier, but pika has alot of potential.

2. I find it odd that when people list good pikas chad is almost never mentioned. Like I'm sorry to chad if I'm meat riding him, but he placed just as good as axe at genesis, and got 5th at a midwest regional circuit even, beating cosmo and the chosen one (deku) in his bracket.
Now I'm not trying to start a best pika debate, I personally don't think its important who is the best. But I do think that sometimes credit/respect/gratification should be given when its deserved.
Like I said, sorry if I'm meat riding

Chad is the next best pikachu after axe. At least at the moment.

DJN's and ChuDat's pika's are definately legit though. And Kels'. Guy's got a mean pika.

And everyone. Geez, there's a lot of pika main/secondary/tertiaries these days.

what! dude! man i knew i should've tried to find the thread for the valley again and post in there, saying i was going. i'm sorry man, i should've said something =(

in my opinion, i think pikachu is better than DK, but then again, DK is my 2nd worst character lol

i feel that pikachu deserves to be mid tier more than DK does

and i DEFINITELY agree with Chad being one of the top 2 pika players. out of every pikachu i've ever faught, he's given me the most trouble. at pound, our matches were actually going pretty even. his pikachu is phenominal, and i never understood why no one gave him any credit.

i remember a scenario that happened quite a few times. i was sitting next to him, and he was playing friendlies with another person. someone that was walking by said something along the lines of "Good **** Axe!!!"

i felt bad, because chad deserved that credit, but it's just stupid that people assumed that it was me. chad deserves just as much credit as i do, and i told him that in person. he's the most amazing pikachu that i've ever fought against and he needs to be recognized. at Genesis, he defeated Light 2-0, and Light defeated me at the most recent tournament that we both attended

don't get me wrong. N64 is one heck of an amazing pikachu, and Kels is freakin ridiculous. i love Festizzio's pikachu too. i've never fought against DJN's pika before but i've seen the vids, and it's crazy. same with chu's. but chad's pikachu has been the toughest that i've ever fought, and his impresses me the most out of any other pika that i've seen

much <3 to all the pika players though lol. all of you guys are amazing, i just think that chad deserves more credit

Quit life for forgetting lol. We definitely fought before. The first time we played each other was at Genesis during our money match. You won 3-1. I won the first match, then you won the next 3 but all by one stock. Close, intense, but definitely fun games. It was mad fun playing against you in team friendlies at Pound 4 too. I can't wait till we team. I hope you can go to the Florida tournament in June so we can **** :)

I don't get credit because I'm quiet and modest :)

And if you remember, Modest trait gives you a bonus to Special Attack in Pokemon :D

I really want to hang out with my Pika brothers more. You guys are the best.

I watched it when I was little.

But a pika party sounds better than the nazi and commist party. is there a president, king or someone you believe is God?
