I have mixed feelings looking back on K. Rool's inclusion in Smash. On one hand, he's one of the best designed SSBU newcomers, a really fun character, and represents a great classic game series - but on the other, he got in through the ballot, which I feel was super exploitative; he contributes to the major issues of SSBU's roster being too monetarily-minded by being a fan demand pick; and a lot of his supporters did have a kinda strange (even if not necesarilly malicious) ulterior motive where they wanted him as a trojan horse to get him in a new DK platformer and not Smash alone. I might just be thinking of this negatively because being so excited for K. Rool was a bit of a minor trauma for me, but still.

I just read the officially-released Pibby storyboard and it's both sad and a little funny how people were expecting the show to be a commentary on strict corporate possession of dormant IP when in reality it seems to more be taking aim at meme and remix culture in a kinda spiteful way.

It's weird too, because despite that "don't corrupt our precious IP" vibe, it (at least judging from this probably-non-final storyboard) also seems very resentful towards the kind of show Pibby as a character is pastiching - Pibby's friends seem less like "over-sheltered innocents in a scary situation" and more "absolute idiots who walk into death like lemmings", feels a lot more Happy Tree Friends than the relatively serious tone of the trailer.

Watching an MVS tierlist video and

Listening to someone seriously talk about The Rock's Black Adam as a fighting game character feels borderline like they're being exploited.
There's a nice irony to the best character in the 1v1 gamemode being Jake, a character who likely only got in (at least so early) because of the 2v2 focus.

In all seriousness, Bubsy is a really tricky series to evaluate, because the quality of a Bubsy game as a whole package is usually opposite to the quality of a Bubsy game as a game if that makes sense? The reboot games (thus far) are completely forgettable outside of their soundtracks and dialogue, but very compotent platformers, while the original 90s games tended to be absolute messes mechanically, but had a lot of interesting ideas and outright well-executed visuals - the only constant is that Bubsy 2 sucks.

You know, thinking back about that awful Sakurai Dolby take, maybe it's just me growing up autistic, but it never really crossed my mind until then that people wouldn't like logos, even the long and unskippable kind. Even watching CinemaSins as an edgy teenager I thought the joke with the running logos bit that I compared Sakurai's take to was "Yeah, they point out everything, even if it isn't a flaw", not "logos are too long, this is a flaw".

Star Wars came out in 1977, 16 years after Yuri Gagarin entered orbit and exactly 22 years after the start of the space race and beginning of the mass popularity of space toys, fitting right into the 20-to-30-year-nostalgia bubble, Star Wars is fundamentally based around "nostalgia pandering".

Execution, on the other hand, is another matter - but critcising the simple idea of "nostalgia pandering" as a whole as opposed to how it is done is, for many IPs that have managed to sustain themselves for a long time, completely neglecting their historical context.

Disney Speedstorm making Kermit a bonus and not doing a Muppet season is a huge missed opportunity. I guess a Muppet track would run the risk of overlapping with the cinema section of the Steamboat Willie stage, but still.

I really can't bring myself to care much about Speedstorm as a whole though, just because they stopped making all the unlocks free for local play, and since then I've heard there's been some other suspicious things going on with monetization.

There are a lot of valid and gripping criticisms of modern Atari, down to an existential level, I don't want to shill for any company or endorse any massive corporate buyout, but god damn the Intellivision news is a relief. As silly as the Amico saga has been, it's always been a bit sad that the Intellivision name and library had to be dragged through it. Of course, ideally these almost 50 year old games and hardware should at least be nearing the public domain in an ideal world, but getting off of Mr. Tallarico's wild ride is always a good thing
