  • Having finished it recently, I've gotta say Jojolion's ending is not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be. It's not perfect and I think narratively it's unsatisfying in some areas, but thematically I'd say it concludes and explores the themes of the part really well, enough to carry it.

Honestly, I think the biggest issue with JoJolion's ending is just the pacing. Narratively and even conceptually, it's pretty decent, and does a good job at exploring the themes like you mention... it just kind of sucks that, in practice, it's like there was one continuous Stand fight taking place over the course of three years. I say this as someone who's always found the first half of JoJolion to be some of my favourite JJBA media out there - the second half is by no means as awful as people suggest.

Yeah I agree there. It's again a thing where the themes take precedent over some of the narrative beats, Wonder of U is a really great ending thematically that ties into the core themes of dualism and the nature of living, but it does sort of interrupt the Higashikata storyline for 10 chapters of "nooo the plane door is landing help". It's difficult to match Vitamin C which is such an amazing arc, and I can think of a lot of the typical changes people suggest that would help the pacing a bit (introduce Toru at the beginning when they go to the hospital, have him show up in Yasuho's flashback, have the Kaato flashback happen in the story itself, etc.), but what we get still has a lot of strong moments that I think help string things together. It's definitely a story that I think would benefit from the typical changes the anime makes to streamline things.
Something I think is funny is that it seems like Arthur from Ghosts 'n Goblins got into both Smash and Astro Bot just because the directors really liked the game and wanted to put him in. Sakurai implied as much when he was going over the Mii costumes for Pyra/Mythra and has repeatedly talked about his fondness for the original game, while Nicolas Doucet, director of Astro Bot, said that he pushed for Arthur because he loved Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins on the PSP in an interview with Skill Up. It's an odd coincidence.
