I'm pretty sure most who have known me before would be surprised to see me rant on the subject, seeing as how I've historically been pretty conservative.... but anyone with some common sense can see that discrimination of this length is just disgusting... all the school board did was wrongfully take away the event from the entire student body all for the sake of maintaining an unconstitutional policy with no reasoning except to target a particular group.

What does it harm for the student to take her date and wear a tux? It's not like they are going to commit any lewd activities in public and ruin the prom as a result... What? Is fire going to rain from the sky while Nazis ride on dinosaurs as a result of the lesbians going to prom just like everyone else?

I gave up trying to understand people a while ago. It's a fruitless exercise, and stories like this aren't doing much to change my mind on the matter...

This is why I just can't buy into being a conservative.

Ok, you don't want the government to have control over your lives? If that's the case, why are you fine with the government telling you what your sexual orientation should be? Or having the government tell you you can't have an abortion?

I've brought this up a lot with a few other conservatives (mainly my dad, who is about as conservative as you can get), and pretty much all of them play the religion card to justify it. >_>

Please don't stereotype conservatives... there is a difference between conservative and what you are talking about... let's just say what you refer to is "Republican" for lack of a more fair term... not all conservatives are affiliated with the Republican party, and most of these conservatives are the brightest of the bunch.

some dumb commenter said:
Whether or not you approve of the behavior the homosexual couple DID ruin the prom for everyone else. Making a stand is fine until innocent people are harmed and in this case that's what happened.

Oh. My. God. Those comments just keep getting better and better!

Don't homosexual people have their own clubs where they can go so they don't disgust the majority?
This is why democracy does not work. A democracy can be 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner. In this case, the school is the 2 wolves feasting on the hot lesbians.

My rule of thumb: never respect the opinions of the general public as they aren't usually worth anything.
This.

And I've nothing against most gays, but out of the 4 I know, 1 has stalked me, 1 tried to kiss me out of nowhere (Tater used FALCON KICK! It's super effective!), and the 3rd did both of the former and tried to cop a feel during a demonstration from our science teacher (Falcon f-smash=critical hit!). Makes it difficult NOT to have a negative attitude with gays, but that school is pretty effed up.

I read this earlier today. Americans really need to get over the fact that gay people exist in the world and stop trying to cover it up.
This pretty much. People need to chill the **** out.

I wonder if the school realized that by doing this they're pretty much pitting the entire school against this one couple. I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of hate crime arises from this.

EDIT: The school is now facing a lawsuit from the ACLU if they don't reinstate the prom.

I do not like to make blanket, prejudiced statements about things that I usually have very little knowledge of but,

publics schools are run like socialist filthy commie regimes.

edit:

This is why I just can't buy into being a conservative.

I think the word 'conservative' has been brutally hijacked by libertarian neocons today, free-market fanatics and fundamentalists and stuff have basically infiltrated the entire party because the 'conservative' term is so favorable with voters. Traditional conservatives hardly resemble the ones you see in the news today T.T

Fix'd.
This story makes me sad. I hate ignorant people.
I said America because there was a similar incident about two weeks ago where a school in New York censored a picture of two guys kissing despite it being a page in the year book that the gay student paid like 10 bucks for.

@ Swastikapyle:

The modern day republican and democractic parties are basically *******izations of what they were intended to be. If you want to have a good idea about how conservatism is supposed to be, read up on James Madison. If you want to have a good idea about how liberalism is supposed to be, read up on Thomas Jefferson. I was a conservative for the longest time until I started to look at the party as a whole and realizing that it's basically a bunch of *******. The two main parties are so different today from what they were back in the early 1800's that it's not even funny.

Okay yeah the stereotyping in this thread is a little stupid. People in general are stupid, let's not give any extra credit to any single location.

Unbelievable...

The whole student body will be against them, no doubt some kind of revenge will occur.

Very true... I didn't much appreciate having such a comment aimed at Southerners, seeing as how I'm a resident of Louisiana, the neighboring state of the offending Mississippi.

Stuff likes this makes me want to facepalm until I bleed. If you agree with homosexuality or not is compleately up to you, but canceling an entire event just because of one person is just stupid. Good God, she's a lesbian, not a freaking axe murderer.

^ If I recall correctly (I read this yesterday, I'll try to find the source) the school originally was going to just ban the couple because of their policy against gay couples, but the ACLU got involved, who issued an ultimatum, which caused the school to cancel the whole prom. Still a dumb decision, but canceling the prom was the last resort.

EDIT: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=10067417

Keep in mind that if this was a private school, the ACLU would not have been involved and the prom would have gone on as usual.
