Smash Lord
This is a very good way to put it, getting mad at a sour situation or not getting what you want usually just causes more problems. Even if you did make it to the tourney and went shopping on a different day it would cause some negative feelings between you and your girl. I mean its her birthday and if you strive to be that special cool guy, thats the perfect excuse of a day to show how far you'd go for her. Its true shes not being considerate of the rest of your night, but life goes on, we've all got to make sacrifices once in a while. The most important thing is to stay positive no mater what the outcome is, this applies to everything in life. A girlfriend is one of the few things that needs to come before smash.Y.b.M., the correct phrase for you in this point is "man up".
Just skip a tournament and say "yeah, my bad. You're more important. I just don't like knowing I'm sitting home alone when I can be having fun while you're out doing your thing. But you're right... it's your birthday so I'll do whatever you want."
Then if you're lucky she'll be like "ohhhhh you can go! We can go shopping later!"
Chill out, think positively.

That would only happen if she was being unreasonable, or just wanting to start an argument. OS's response was the mature thoughtful way to handle this, it wasn't a response prompted by emotion. An emotion based response would lead to more argument and impulsive actions that would lead to regret. While I agree with OS, the other possibility is she gets mad at you for trying to guilt-trip her.
