Ok then your area of West VA is worse than South Carolina. Congrats.

Someone told me that tristate typically refers to NY, NJ, and CT (wtf?).

So to clarify for everyone saying tristate, they mean NY, NJ, and PA, it's seriously the best.
Well it could be either way if you wanna get technically, but its generally known as NY NJ and PA lol

I have it bad. You have it bad. It doesn't make a difference to me really. I haven't played smash seriously since July because of money problems. I'd rather be able to have money and travel than be stuck here with nothing.

Also, I've mad my decision. Colver, PA is the worst place to live if you're a smasher.

Ask Renth. All you have to do is look at a map, and you'll see its boxed in, 4/5 hours west is pittsburgh. 4/5 hour south is some other towns. 7+ hours east is Philly. 7 hours north is more smashers.

Its like being boxed in from all sides.

rofl Coreygames, calm down. annonymous, you and I are all in the same boat here. As long as there isn't any involvement in the community, it doesn't matter how many people there are. You can't really get anymore than dead lol.
Wow I just realized how sad I am.

*cough* you fail

Pittsburgh is 2 hours from me, Scranton is 4 hours away, lancaster is an hour and 1/2 same area as carlisle, state college is an hour + away, and philly is 4 hours away not 7+

Best places on WC to play Melee are WA and California.

Which is why I make such an effort to travel there as often as I can, without having a license and all.

I man up and bus, son.

Hence why you're going to actually improve unlike most of the stagnant melee population who then continue to ***** about Brawl ruining melee even though it doesn't really matter.

i remember this dude named balladechina i think posting all over the place a year ago or so looking for people in west virginia to play with him and his friends. i think he came to a tourney in ohio once. also, most of the midwest is pretty much as good as its ever been for melee, with the exception of michigan

oh my bad.

Its still pretty far, and you look boxed in on the map lol
Starkville, MS is way way worse than anywhere in PA. I have to drive at least 2.5 hours just for friendlies (with like, one person) most of the time. I have to drive at least 5 hours for tournaments. Tournaments in Atlanta are the only ones I can generally make it to (everywhere else tournaments are held is really, really far away), but 5 hours isn't that bad. The real problem is how little practice I get here.

Also tri-state does refer to NY, NJ, CT.

And you don't have it bad mooney you're less than 2 hours from Orlando. Though I guess if you can't afford to drive there for tournaments it doesn't make much difference.

I'm going to have to agree that Mississippi is indeed the worst state for Melee.

idk they have NES N00b , Chad, Iori, and Ihavespaceballs

pretty much the best smashers in the south (not counting Florida/Texas)
Chad, Iori, and IHSB live like 15 minutes from Tennessee. Technically they are in MS but they live 3 hours away from me. So, with the qualification "Unless you're in northwest MS" I think it's safe to say MS is ****ing terrible for Smash. I only get to play them when I go to tournaments sadly :(

Though I'm willing to drive up there sometime over break. Especially if n00b and others go (like you VTS, I have never played you).

Northwestern MA is pretty rough. I have to drive an hour and ten minutes to play a competitive smasher (as far as I know). I bet it's worse in other places but the difference (probably) is that I travel that distance for the practice, instead of sit at home. No Johns.

Tri-state typically has CT not PA, because it is usually used to refer to the area surrounding New York City

A "Tri-state" of NY/NJ/PA doesn't really make much sense in a general context, because there is absolutely nothing there ("there" being the intersection of the 3 states)

I'd like to live with other smashers, my roommates here are ****ing lame. Can't just up and move, though, have to finish my degree...I'll be moving after summer though to start a PhD program, but not to Memphis, sadly. I don't think there are even really any PhD mathematics programs in that area.

Chances are good wherever I end up I'll be moving up in the Smash world, though, as even if there's only a tiny scene it's still better than here.

I usually have to go 6 hours (very generous estimate since there are car pooling shenagins and stuff) to go to actual tournies. Tournies that are the closest are Barwl tournies which are 3 and a half hours away of which i could play melee but it isn't an actual tourney. I ****ing win.

Also, I feel the love from VTS. But I don't think I actually compare to true DML, I am too much of a n00b. ;)

There hasn't been a melee tourney in Tennessee since...
well, I've never heard of one, but maybe Memphis might have some, 6 hours away from where I live.

P.S. NES Noob I want to meet you, being another Falcon main with no one to play in the area. I've seen some videos of you before though, and you're probably better than me. *shrug*

Memphis doesn't hence why Memphis has to go to GA for tournies which is 7 hours awayish. I guess we are almost in the same situation but the players I have were already good (and from the sound of it I can travel more) so I have a slight advantage. =P All those vids are also old. But yeah sometime let's play.

Last tournament in memphis was like a year ago. imo i can bring sets up and a car full of people if you guys can find a place to host a tournament and i'm always willing to help/party

or come 2 hours to play with 4-5 other smashers in arkansas which the top smasher were just owned when we came (minus ace/altus)

in arkansas we are pretty close to each other but its like Chamber/Ace/Saber for first then VTS/Altus then Soma21 then others maybe shogun is still good but live 4 hours away.

Monthly this weekend if you guys wanna party/smash

Except you're only like 72 minutes from Chad/Jack/Iori whereas I'm 167 minutes (according to google maps). You have to farther for tourneys, I have to go farther for friendlies. I win I win I win.

Wait...what did I win? :(

Only Arkansas Smasher I've played is Chamberlin...he was in my pool at INN V. I was so bad back then...oh wait I still am. Man that was an awesome tournament though, easily the best I've been to. That **** needs to happen again.

1. tri -state hands down and will always have
2.california-its huge
3. florida-its like stri state with no trains or subways

worst is mississippi- ive been there

one thing that messed up melee tournies was brawl ..thats a given, but it seems like there are alot of people who still play melee who don't want to travel..tired of traveling or wont go because x and o isn't going and i think us smashers need to just go to tournies like we use too..stop being cheap..if u practice enough u might even win some money..i never won a melee tourny ever or came close, but i keep playing because the game is to fun to let go and i am no where near the skill level i want to be..with that being said..good thread

Yeah Brawl did mess things up but I think it's getting better. There's fewer tourneys than there were two years ago, definitely, but more than there were six months ago. It's progress. I don't think Melee will ever reach its previous level of popularity but there's no reason it can't rebound back somewhat. It's not unprecedented. When Counter-Strike Source came out most of the good 1.6 players hated it and most of the scrubbier ones went to Source. But 1.6 is still really popular. Last I checked there were more 1.6 tourneys than Source. It has probably changed since then, but there are still LOTS of 1.6 tourneys, and the newer game came out 2.5 years ago. Brawl has been out less than a year, by comparison, so to me that's encouraging. I think Melee can easily last another 4-5 years or maybe longer, but it's up to us to make that happen. It's the attitude "well Melee is dying, so why bother" that has caused a lot of people to scrub out, which made the community smaller, which in turn lends credence to the idea that Melee is dying, causing more people to scrub out, and so on. It's a vicious circle.

At some people just need to step up and say F*ck that, Melee is not dying because I'm still playing it and so are others and there will continue to be a scene as long as we continue to do so.

instead of just saying the area where we live

how about saying how many tournaments there are/how good they are

norcal is pretty decent, there have been three or four weekends since school started in september where there were no tournaments, plus public transportation is great and everybody is willing to travel

the overall skill level in socal > norcal, but people are lazier there (from my experience)
and you need a car/a friend with a car to get anywhere

socal randoms are scary
socal is quite good

Oregon doesn't seem to be that great anymore, at OSU once brawl came out there was a silence. When I woke up everybody was playing brawl.
