  • Why do people compare Sonic to Dragon Ball? Like yeah, they have blonde, over-gelled super forms but that's about it when it comes to the similarities. One's an environmentalist fable about super-cool wisecracking furries saving innocent animals from being made into robot slaves, the other is an action-packed epic about morally dubious super-humans fighting to see who's the strongest and saving the universe along the way.

I think it's also the parallels between some of the characters, too: Sonic and Goku are the chipper and powerful protagonists, Shadow and Vegeta are the edgy rival characters, and Silver and Trunks are the naïve time travellers from a doomed future.

Sonic and Goku have contrasting elements to their personalities that gives them flaws, Goku is more naive which can lead to some major troubles (the cell senzu bean and universe tournament for example) but his upfront kindness and childlike innocence allows him to make allies out of former foes like Vegeta and give him the streghth to continue fighting, Sonic is more knowledgable he knows that his enemies are causing trouble and acts for the benefit of the greater good, however he is also cocky and this cockiness led to many different situations (such as being transformed into the werehog and having tails being captured by the deadly six) so in the end the former is innocnent which makes him a more prone to common mistakes and the other is more prone to being blinded by his own cocky attitude
I wouldn't be as opposed to Shadow as I am if we got Tails first, and I'd be completely indifferent on him if Tails, Knux, and Eggman were already in.

It's kinda like my thoughts on Rosalina, on her own she's not a bad choice, but her getting in before Daisy was a tiny brain move, and I'm still a little sour she gets her own moveset but Daisy doesn't get as much as a changed stat.

As terms of who I expect to make it into smash the most
Eggman > Tails > Shadow > Knuckles for Ultimate.
Eggman > Shadow > Tails > Knuckles for Smash 6 whenever that happens.

As for why I think this because I feel like rambling:
With Ultimate's love of villains, I would expect Eggman to get in the game before any of them. Especially since Eggman is more important than all of them since he's literally in every single Sonic game and plays at least a somewhat big role in all of them, and is the main antagonist in a lot of them.

After that it gets harder to decide.
Tails has been around the most obviously. He's sonic's number 2. The Luigi to Mario. So it makes sense. However, I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai saw him and thought he would be better as an assist trophy though. Tails often plays a support role in many games.

Knuckles has been around almost as long as Tails. However after his first couple games he's just kind of there. Which unfortunately happens to a lot of cool Sonic characters, but hey at least they get remembered. He'd be a great pick if you wanted to specifically make the retro 2D fans happy, which is what made Sonic popular in the first place.

Shadow is the newest, but he debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 which is what a lot of Sonic fans claim to be one of the better Sonic games. Then he gets a lot of special treatment in games where he plays a pretty large role. Probably be the best pick if you wanted to make the 3D fans happy. Also I maybe biased towards Shadow a lot, as he is my most wanted out of the Sonic characters. I stopped playing the Sonic games around SA2, Sonic Heroes and Sonic 6 were newish (also he got his own game). Where he has extremely important roles to the story as well. I do glance at the Sonic games from time to time though.

Gameplay-wise all 4 of the characters could be incredibly interesting in their own ways and they can do whatever they want with the gameplay. So I don't think gameplay helps or hinders any of their chances to get in over another.

However I find it extremely unlikely Knux or Edgy the Hedgy will get into Ultimate because they are assist trophies. Not a disconfirmation but it certainly doesn't help their chances. So maybe next game.
This is a hot take, but I honestly feel Pokémon doesn't have enough Smash fighters, and what is there is seriously lacking in variety.
Considering that the Amico's main selling point is that it only allows E and E10+ games, Earthworm Jim is a weird choice for a "killer app" as, while not exactly on the level of Conker or even Gex, Jim was known for innuendoes, gross-out, and having scuffles with Nintendo's censors - and his creator is somewhat notorious for opposing quote-unquote "SJW censorship".
I say this a lot and it's probably getting super annoying to hear about from me every 5 seconds, but seriously: why do we never discuss Paula as a potential echo candidate? She is absolute perfect echo material - same body shape, different silhouette, same powers, and comes from a series that probably should be represented more but not to the point of a completely new third fighter.
    Torgo the Bear

Technically, most of Ness's powers in Smash belong to Paula in the first place. I'd love to see her, although personally I'm still holding onto some hope that we get Porky (mostly cause I love the idea of playing as a character who pilots a mech. Bowser Jr. isn't quite there...)

Regardless, I can't help but feel like if we got a Mother echo it would be Ninten, and that would kinda mess his character up since he's not supposed to be able to use any offensive PSI techniques...
DK's stage representation in Smash is so weird to me - jungles are only really that heavily featured in 3 of the main DK platformers (DKC, DK64, and DKCR), yet they take up all but one of DK's stages. Why not use the crystal mines? the neon pirate theme park? the bramble maze in the sky? the balloon-filled lava cavern? the pirate ship's stormy mainbrace? the giant beehive? and those are from one game alone! DK is a series that lives and dies on atmosphere so having every DK stage be in a jungle and a majority of the music be either jazzy jungle music or a boss theme makes them seem more like a representation of Donkey Kong merchandise than Donkey Kong itself.
Here's how I would handle a new Yoshi game:
    • Cut out (no pun intended) the arts and crafts look. I'd personally go for something more Disney or Ghibli-esque.
    • Bring back tough-but-fair difficulty - I'm not worried about isolating the kid audience, have you seen how much kids go crazy for Cuphead? This would also include giving mellow mode the axe, though wings could come back as a power up.
    • Expand Yoshi's base moveset beyond just the YI moveset, albeit only slightly. His headbutt fair from Smash could work quite well I feel.
    • Give the vehicle forms a little more prominence, but make it so any obstacle you can overcome while morphmated you can also tackle in dinosaur form, even if it's a little trickier.
    • Bring back the Mario 2 and Yoshi's Story casts and have them coexist with the existing Yoshi's Island cast - maybe even have Wart as the villain instead of Kamek. The Story characters would require major redesigns however, given they're very tacky design-wise.
    • Bring back the Yoshi rescuing system from Woolly World and having multiple babies like in DS. I'd love to add Baby Daisy and Baby Waluigi in some form
    • Try to have individual stages be memorable for certain non-aesthetic aspects, such as a surplus of a rare enemy or a one-stage-only gimmick.
    • Reduce the amount of backtracking, especially in castle levels.
    • Ditch the flutter jump. It can still be animated as Yoshi flapping his legs, but make him more nimble and easy to control when double-jumping
    • Likely the most potentially controversial change here, but give players control over their eggs' aim rather than having to wait for it to line up.
Hey, does anyone here know this wacky guy's name and what show he's from?
Jim Henson: "The Muppets are not made for children, they're made for adults but just so happen to be appropriate for children to enjoy"

    18 years later

Jim Henson's son: "OK, so what if... we did the Muppets... but they kill each other and have sex? I am willing to commit to 10 years of development hell as to make sure this project sees the light of day."

As we all know, the Muppets never had any sex and violence before that point.
MVPerry is the YouTube equivalent to Kim Kardashian - famous just for being famous. You wouldn't think that'd be remotely possible on a platform that prioritises content over who makes it or how, but showbiz finds a way.
"Wario is such a gross-out joke nowadays, why can't he be macho and badass like he was pre-WarioWare?"

The developers of Wario Land: Shake It!/Shake Dimension made the decision to make Wario very masculine, instead of "funny/goofy". (Though Wario will always be funny/goofy, it's unavoidable. xD)

Wario Land: Shake It! had an amazing artstyle that I'd like to see replace the New Super Mario Bros. artstyle for 2D Mario.
I don't watch football, so I can't really speak for the culture and such, but I don't get why people root for their country's team and not the team they think is the most talented.
Started that creation thread I said I shouldn't do. Hope it gets some attention.
I want to start a "Smashboards Creates: SSBU Stages' Pass" thread but I'm having a hard enough time running the Animated Smash Bros. thread so I'm not sure if having a second (active) thread would be good.
Why do Sonic fans take IGN (and review scores in general) so seriously? Especially considering how much they tend to disagree with said reviews.
Most instances of "flanderisation" when it comes to Japanese characters are just said characters getting more accurately localised when people have adjusted to their American versions. Whether that's for better or for worse is up to you, but don't call it flanderisation.
A character I think would have a really interesting effect on the speculation scene is PaRappa the Rapper. He is, in my eyes, the one character who would most clear as day illustrate "Smash is no longer just about Nintendo." as not only is he owned by Sony with no Nintendo appearances, but there is also a relatively popular Nintendo IP with the same genre and a similar aesthetic to PaRappa. PaRappa would also break a lot of Smash fans out of the console war trance of Nintendo being the "only innovators" and "the only ones who don't make gritty shooters all the time" given how historically significant PtR is to gaming and its cute, silly style.
