I think it would actually be really fun to make a Smash mod that changes every character's moveset to excessive references under one condition: EVERYONE'S archetype is changed. Virtually an all-new game. Like Garfield NASB 2 transitions for everyone. Unconditionally, even characters like Marth/Falcon/Jigglypuff who's Smash incarnations are synonymous with Smash, and characters like Steve, Ryu and Villager who have virtually everything they can do in their movesets - obviously using some real two-flickies logic. Fox is a zoner now with all the arwing's lasers and bombs. swordie Mario attacking with all his hats. Pure-rushdown DK chasing everyone around with Barrel Cannons.

Combo Devils' gameplay looks awesome, I will pick it up if I get a laptop that can run it or it releases on Switch, love the idea of a skateboarding fighter especially, buuuuuuuuut the character designs have once again fallen into "not-a-crossover crossover" syndrome - not as egregious as Flash Party though, at least all the humans look like they're from the same universe with the furries as outliers, but still

Yet again, I'm sorry for the publicdomainposting as of late, but something I find interesting about Pooh B&H is that if Disney were to sue, they would have a legal case, in fact it wouldn't even be ambigious from a legal standpoint, Pooh is not public domain yet in the UK, and Blood & Honey is a 100% British production, writers are British; actors; distributors; filming locations - not just that, but B&H's Pooh is yellow and wears a red shirt (albeit tartan and under overalls) - but Disney just... aren't taking action?

I've been compiling a list of cartoon characters that would've been public domain by now if copyright wasn't reformed in the 70s (it was previously 56 years), and it's honestly an outright tragedy - pretty much everything notable from Looney Tunes, Jay Ward, Osamu Tezuka, MGM, The Beano/Dandy, UPA, or Dr. Suess; all the European cartoons like Smurfs/Asterix/Lucky Luke/Tintin, Thomas the Tank Engine, a handful of Muppets, Alvin and the Chipmunks, a good chunk of the Marvel and DC A-Listers, and a half or so of the classic Hanna Barbera lineup - not just that, but we'd be less than a decade away from Scooby-Doo; Wacky Races; Fat Albert; the earliest version of Garfield; and the first video games. Sonic and The Simpsons would become public domain before most of us would gain a single grey hair.

Not just that, but pre-reform copyright law required manual extensions on the 28th anniversary (which is why some Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, and Popeye cartoons are public domain, but not the characters themselves) - so a ton of dead/failed IPs from the 80s and 90s would likely be in our grasp by now. Who doesn't want to revive the ever-beloved Shnookums and Meat?

I generally think lost media guys looking for promos for baby shows for babies instead of the first Doctor Who or whatever is based and cool and good, buuuuut the fact that there are 3 pieces of Dumbo lost media, and the only one people don't care about and haven't bothered to put on the Lost Media Wiki or anything is literally the first version of Dumbo that the Disney movie was adapted from, is a little frustrating

OK, I'm in public domain brainrot mode, and I'm gonna ramble a bit about Pooh and why we're only really seeing crappy horror renditions of him so far - there's a few possible reasons for this

1. There are probably hundreds of Pooh stories, both sincere and subversive, in development right now, but all mediums take a long time if you're trying to release something people want to pay for in money - if you have no intent in actually making money off of Poohing in public and just want to goof around with the IP, well you don't really need to wait for anything.
2. Tigger is not public domain yet. He's the second most popular character in the franchise, and probably the most popular with its core target audience of small children - most people writing a Pooh story would consider including Tigger a maker-or-breaker.
3. Horror movies are cheap and quick - Halloween was made on a budget of $325,000 and filmed in less than a month, and famous film stars are considered a detriment to the atmosphere of a horror movie. Combine this with the fascination on "What if babby show but SPOOKY" that predates, but really boomed with, the internet, and animation (the medium where a bipedal talking bear would best thrive) being infamously costly and time-consuming and it's obvious that this will be the first to come out of the floodgates.
4. Disney still owns the Pooh trademark - this is not much of an issue for indie studios, but restricted merchandising is a MAJOR problem for large companies. If say, Dreamworks, wanted to do a Pooh movie, it would be nigh impossible to sell plushies and t-shirts of their Pooh, which is where the money is in for animation - not impossible of course, (take "Fox's Peter Pan & the Pirates", another show that riled up Disney and had to put its production company in the title) but distinguishing their Pooh from Disney's would be an uphill battle not worth pursuing when you could just license a more contemporary book and officially establish your version as a seperate trademark, a business model that gained Dreamworks a majority of its hits. This also erases any incentive for any Video Brinquedo sorts, since confusing people is the whole point (and animated mockbusters are a dying art as is)

I have a feeling this song-and-dance will happen again with Mickey, and Popeye, and Bugs, and The Flintstones, and SpongeBob in 3858 or whatever.

I do think that if a non-F2P platform fighter ever manages to legitimately gain online popularity, it won't be a crossover game, but rather an original IP with a very distinctive aesthetic. I think it'd be more likely to be an indie release than a major studio IP, but both could happen.

I never really gave Bub and Bob in Smash that much consideration beyond "I like this game, it'd be fun to have in Smash", but now I think about it, those bubbles could be an awesome command grab/projectile combination - I could imagine them as going in an arc rather than staying in place, but still trapping foes in it - essentially being the ultimate combo tool, cancelling out DI and forcing a set knockback regardless of weight or damage. Should be blockable though.

I'm reading some of the Bubsy discorse from the Next Smash thread - at a safe distance - and I think these people really don't understand Bubsy as a concept. People are acting like the diegetic crux of the character is "Sonic but annoying/wacky" when he's really a lot more of a Daffy Duck/Donald Duck-style character.
