Before anyone misinterprets this, I'm not saying these dark/adult elements are bad (though there are some here where I do think the adult elements were handed poorly), but rather than I find the culture around dark/adult moments in kids' media extremely obnoxious, and that a lot of media - especially that which is either on the obscure side, has an overly cute aesthetic, or predates the nostalgia range of the average internet user - can end up being reduced to those scenes alone in the public eye.

On one hand, I do think critic reviews are majorly flawed (even if not as much so as audience scores) since professional critics will often have to cover works outside their genre preferences, but on the other I do not understand why fans of "dumb fun" movies like Mario get so hostile about low critic scores. The only people a low critic score will draw away from a movie like that are people who probably wouldn't like it anyway.

I thought the Mario movie was OK, not great but nowhere near bad - just a mindless kids' flick that's hard to really talk about critically as a non-child. Barely any plot beyond "Bowser bad, stop Bowser", but the appeal is moreso the characters themselves and how they interact with one another. As I said earlier, despite being the character I was dreading the performance of most, DK was my favourite part - Seth did a really good job with the character and I love his dynamic with Mario, even if his laugh is as grating as it usually is. I also love the incel-y vibes they gave Bowser lmao - his motivation is "marry Peach" first and "take over the kingdom" second.. There's a desperate lack of Luigi.
