I'm kinda surprised Sakurai was willing to outright admit he thinks broad appeal and deep mechanics are mutually exclusive. not surprising he thinks that at all, Smash as a whole is "unneeded compromises: the series", but he just admitted it so bluntly.

Currently brainstorming an idea for a creation thread to start once SMSB finishes, I think I have a good idea with mass appeal and a lot of wackiness potential, sort of akin to the Fortnite thread but in a genre more people on a Smash website would be familiar with (not a fighting game of any kind, mind you) - but given my track record I'm gonna save this for once SMSB ends.

This genre is one that has had a lot of pitfalls on creation threads in the past, pitfalls I aim to avoid this time.

I really hate this notion. Dark and edgy stories have always been the norm for children's entertainment even during the most regulated and censored eras, if anything there isn't enough purely comforting "iyashikei" media outside of anime or the preschool age range.

It's kinda interesting how people never really use Bugs Bunny to represent WB as a corporation the same way people use Mickey Mouse. I feel there's 3 possible explanations for this:

Bugs and his IP holders already have edge and maturity, turning him into an evil mastermind isn't shocking like it is for the modern Mickey
Bugs' cartoons are both more easily accessible and more beloved than Mickey's, and therefore people who want to comment on corporate situations would be too attached to Bugs to interpret him as an icon of a corporation's downfall or mistakes
Warner Bros. don't use Bugs as a mascot as often as Disney uses Mickey, nor are they as fiercly protective of him and therefore he isn't universally readable as representing Warner Bros. and using him to criticise them doesn't feel like "sticking it to the man" as much as shallow parody.

They changed the ending, and I don't know whether to be happy or sad about that - like, on one hand the original ending always rubbed me the wrong way, but on the other hand it was always pretty damn funny to see Pac-Man smile like a psychopath after eating a guy.

I guess if I had to make Pac-Man less of a sociopath in this context I'd make it so Orson was having an angry tantrum instead of crying? I dunno. Either way Pac-Man became friends with Orson in World 3 so it's not like it's completely destroying Pac-Man canon.

EDIT: Oh, turns out the new ending is the 100% completion bonus and the original ending is the "bad ending". I like that. Clever way to handle a divisive part of a classic game.

I often see a notion from Smash fans that more buttons inherently means more complex, even though often times it's the opposite - even as a kid playing PSASBR (a game that actively encourages strong move spam mind you) I was able to use light and strong moves in tandem more effectively than I could playing Smash as an adult just from the button layout alone.
