If people thought NASB - even pre-Garfield - didn't have enough characters at 20, there's really no chance in hell another platform fighter could challenge Smash popularity-wise. There's absolutely character libraries large enough to challenge Nintendo's (in fact I'd argue Nintendo's character library is actually pretty unimpressive, and if it weren't for Smash most people would just think of them as "Mario, Link, Pikachu, and uhh... Dr. Kawashima? Do they own Mega Man?"), but even with an AAA budget, launching with 50+ characters would be a real task without existing concepts; assets; and animations.
That being said, challenging Smash quality-wise isn't hard at all.

I think I said this when Scoob's absence was announced, but my Velma hot take is that rather than bringing back Scooby, I would've cut Daphne; Fred; and Shaggy/Norville to make a standalone universe with its own characters, aesthetics, and rules designed around the character of Velma.

I was not expecting the film to be this popular and well-recieved, at all. Hope it's good when I can see it next month.
Hot take: Even though I think Garten of Banban is 99% likely to be satire, I think the Banban gang are more well designed as characters than the Poppy Playtime toys. They look cuter and more kindergarten-suitable in 2D than than the Playtime toys' "cute" forms (Huggy Wuggy's non-violent form always looked more to me like a 90s Nicktoons character than the Mr. Potato Head/Teddy Ruxpin context the game implies), but also don't need much tweaking besides textures and lighting to be scary in 3D, it's kinda clever really.
I've always found it funny how non-Pokémon/Sanrio children's anime gets so little exposure to Western audiences that people just assume that 5 year olds watch One Piece in Japan.

I don't want Krystal in Smash, not because of her design or the questionable quality of her source material, but rather because she actually has canonical powers and on-foot weapons, and I'd rather a second unique StarFox character continue the tradition of making BS up.

Considering Bee Movie came out during peak Harry Potter hype, and the peak of pop culture reference jokes in kids' movies, I do wonder why they didn't include any "Dumbledore used to mean bumblebee" jokes. Too obscure? I dunno.
