Melee Match Casting

I was wondering if Melee could benefit from match casting as they do with games like StarCraft.

Normally, we have a tournament, upload videos, sometimes those videos will be accompanied by commentary, but most of the time they won't.

Is this off-putting to casual viewers? If we casted old/new matches while offering steady insight into each match with some entertainment value thrown in, could we invite interest in the competitive melee community? Could more exposure be brought to our game's top players?

Could this benefit the community?
Thoughts?

EDIT: Well, the mass majority of people in this community say "Yes, it can benefit the community". So, I present to you a semi-official purpose to keep in mind when casting smash videos yourself:

PURPOSE OF MELEE CASTING:

The purpose should be to present matches to a broader audience of viewers so that they may be more inclined to support our community in various ways.

The purpose of these casts should NOT be solely to educate nor entertain.

If we plan to attract a broader audience, we must meet broader needs. So try to have an element of everything in your casts, with a slight focus in education, hype, humor, OR whatever you are most comfortable with in fulfilling our purpose.

+1!

There should be more commentating... the european matches are just ingame sound, and the american commentators just scream into the mic at the top of their lungs :D But casting melee would probably be pretty hard to get a "normal" cast though, since you can't just point at something ("Idra is massing marines here to counter X" (I don't know anything about starcraft ii (does Idra play terran? :D ), 20 minute or longer matches, where half of the time nothing interesting happens? Seriously, i stopped playing dota for a reason! ) :D ) and explain a bit of it, because chances are, until the commentator finishes the sentence we're facing a new situation... seriously, peach can float for three seconds, and it feels like unlimited most of the time :D (fox can do empty shff four times per second, I'm not convinced I could say "short hop" more then twice per second :D )

but wife / waffles had pretty entertaining commentary when I watches some of their matches, and live streams probably are a good thing, because well... the action is going on RIGHT NOW, and nobody can know for sure how the match will end (unless PP / armada are facing somebody else :D), so maybe adding some more explanations for new players could help getting the best game (tied with bloodline champions for the pc!) the attention it deserves :)

Something like that. A person takes a match that may have been viewed by some, casts it and provides commentary on a match that's already taken place. This exposes the game to the more casual players who perhaps may not keep up with all the tournaments out there and who can't quite keep up with all the intracacies.

It may serve to convert such casual players into full fledged tournament supporters in the future.

PS-
Can RoneBlaster get an infraction? I mean, I was infracted for trolling when I stated my opinion on a song, maybe he can be infracted for trolling me directly, maybe that qualifies as trolling, yeah?

LOL I'm kidding, I don't really care. But feel free to be fair, mods.

I always thought about this when i watched sc2 videos. I think it would be really sweet if we could get someone with a lot of charisma and smash knowledge to go through videos and do casting (DI, Wife etc). Not sure how popular they'll be to non-smashers but I'm sure it will garner more interest into the community and will definitely help out newer players.

Also, we could avoid random screaming etc, which are hilarious, but aren't all that helpful when you're trying to learn.
nope, we play a kids party game and sing the pokemon theme song.

people dont care about us hugs.

Match casting can be useful in terms of growing the community, HugS.

On a side note, I've never seen such a high ratio of moderators to non-moderators viewing an open room for anyone, meaning HugS probably reported Roneblaster's post seeing as how there are 3 moderators viewing this thread and only HugS as a non-moderator.

I know Taj has considered doing this before, but he never actually got around to doing it. There was a point in time where we were considering having Stab send matches to him and just have him dub commentary over them and send them back and have them uploaded, but they never got around to doing it.

Sounds like it could be a pretty cool idea.

As long as you don't dub over commentary, I would love that. Meaning, you only cast matches that have plain in game audio.

so its basically commentating after you already know what's going to happen?

Nice

I'm actually all for this

I've always wanted to see something like this

Even if it's just pro's commentating their own matches...

EDIT: What CHainAce said, don't want to dub other commentary.

Would be positive for exposure to other community's and media as long as it's done professional enough.

I guess you should test though if it makes the matches more boring to watch or less boring. And I guess there's also viewers that don't like being told what the other player is doing or don't want to watch the match like they are being taught how to play the game.
Wife also provided some background and insight in the community and that made the commentary interesting to listen to.
I think it's more hearing the hype and crowd etc that get us excited when we watch these epic sets then the commentary. I don't remember match specific comments from the Mango vs Armada set but lines like:"Phill is holding my hand right now etc" I do.

This was also part of the reason why I didn't move through with recording commentary at small euro events. There just wasn't enough to commentate about.

Hope this is usefull :)

I think this would be pretty awesome since I know a lot of low/mid players are looking for advice for their matches. If commentary was done into these matches then it would provide them a lot more insights as how they can improve themselves as long as the commentary is well done. This is def an amazing idea.

Though as for bringing in new players, I'm not sure.

I would love to see this. Reminds me a little of when mango commentated his own match against shroomed... Only this would probably be even better :)

LOL I never reported anyone.

Maybe I got some kind of heat on me for my Pokemon posts? Or maybe because a lot of Socal melee has been going nuts on the boards lately?

Oh I see. I just thought it was strange that at one point (right after you called Roneblaster out) there were 4 people viewing this thread and 3 of them are moderators plus you as the non-moderator. Well your Pokemon posts were like 2 weeks ago, so probably not.

Well Pacific West has been putting me on blast since the day I became a moderator but I think they all started calming down lately so I guess they haven't been breaking any SWF rules lately and I started PMing people to remind them about the rules instead of just infracting them straight up with no warning, so I guess Pacific West is all right now now.

I do this for some of my 64 matches and there is a YouTube channel along the same lines called SSB64Commentary.

It's super easy to put commentary over a video. It seems like most video editing programs have a "commentate" or "narrate" feature built in.

Remind me to put myself on invisible so I can ninja catch people =3.

Anyway on the topic of melee casting/commentaries.

I'm for it but it has to be done well. Commentators need to be insightful about the character match up and any other relevant topics such as counterpicking stages/characters.

Wife/Husband are always prime example because they got into the match but always provided a summary of what to watch out for.

What moves one is going for etc. Then in between matches talk about viable CPs w/e.

In short, I think its a great idea, but its something we need to do more I guess "professional" in a sense.

I think it would benefit the whole community. I like Wife's commentary because of how he explains MU's and what both players are trying to accomplish.

I also love Waffles etc commentary.

I kind of wonder who we would get to talk about such things these days, but that's more of a logistical thing and not actually related to the issue.

If this is done well, then I could see a LOT of players benefiting from the spread of accurate knowledge and possibly a more professional look at our community. If we're lucky/successful, it could even help create a higher average skill level throughout the community.

I don't really see a downside here unless someone can't cover enough in a given set for whatever reason(since a fighter is pretty different from SC2, though I don't think this could actually a be a problem for bo5 sets at the least.

For the record, I definitely supported your stance on the Pokemon theme song HugS and a lot of other people did. You've always been one of the better people on the boards and someone who deserved his MLG status back in the day. Just FYI, don't back down bro

Maybe just do this for winners/losers quarterfinals and up?

I know quarters are a bo3 set but I feel like only semis and up is too little?

I think it would benefit even people who are already playing competitively if the commentators talk about their specific region and such.

lol, DJ also uses random obscure terms. Hell I have a hard time understanding him at times rofl.

For Tristate, Swiftbass does an awesome job commentating imo. D1 isn't bad either.

melee is

waaaaay too fast paced for starcraft style commentary

i could imagine this being really cool with

a) ppl that are good at smash doing the casting
b) the casters knowing what they're gonna talk about before they start recording
c) a way to slow down/rewind/fast forward seemlessly so you can talk about stuff in a meaningful way. melees too fast

heres an example of what i mean by slowing down and rewinding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttKIefT3C8k

that vid is exaggerated since its mostly them explaining mechanics but you get the idea

Very true. A play-by-play would be pretty impractical, but we can definitely do better than just screaming into the mic.

Although I love Waffles

Somewhat related to this topic: One of the thing that I think that would be really cool to see would be a show a la older episodes of Cross Counter; or those of you who don't know Cross Counter was this series that was ran by two top SSFIV players where they took matches and analyzed them, pointing out why people did things, thought processes, and so on. Ever since I started following the series on Youtube, I've wanted to see something like this done in the Melee community. If anyone is interested, here's an episode showing how they go about it.

Haha thanks man. I never back down :)

PP, a lot of times I'll throw out ideas and hope that someone else will go through with them. I'm less of a "doing" kind of guy and more of an idea kinda guy.

I've heard Wife's name mentioned a bunch of times, and honestly he's the first person who came to my head. It would be awesome if he were the first to spearhead such a project, and I'd be very glad to help.
