I liked them all except for the sportsmanship johns >.> There's nothing wrong with saying "most" of that stuff. Great list still :D

i think the sportsmanship johns are meant in a way to trick your opponent thinking that you are congratulating him/her, but in reality, you are seriously pissed off inside, i don't know, i could be wrong

I always shake hands and say good job, it was nice playing you, in a tournament setting, it seems thats a john though, and here I thought I was just being a good sportsman.

Slowly starting to enjoy my mothertongue again. :)

I think it largely depends on how you say it. If you try to put an emphasis on how well your opponent played that particular match- implying that normally, you would do better against him- it's a john. Genuine sportsmanship is easy to recognize and always welcomed though.

The stage johns reminded me about one time when I was playing on the Great Bay stage. I was Captain Falcon, my opponent was to my right, I found a opening, kneed him, taunted, then he flew right back towards me surviving. I was like WTF then I found out he bounced off Tingle's balloon.

this list is too good stickie this for sure.

^ this is true, if his controller is visibly broken then i can see that, but if he says it, it is your win and he is johning.
Visible in what sense?

I just picked up my controller a few days ago and, only after using it for a few minutes, did I find the C-stick wasn't working. I have to get a new one.

To verify it's not working, would have needed to flick it while my opponent was watching and show that nothing happens, or let my opponent handle my controller.

I too am confused by the sportsmanship johns. After a match whether I win or lose, I always feel that no matter what I do, I'll sound like a jerk (including if I say nothing); this makes me focus on simply conversing with my opponent, going over the game events.

I am rarely offended by a "good game" comment, the exception being when one competitor clearly got ***** and/or most of the match involved "WTF?" moments (in Brawl this looks to mostly involve clipping through stage platforms). If I lose, I would feel best getting a silent handshake, and a "lolwut?", respectively. If I win, I have no idea how I'd respond to winning by that much at this time; but if I win through WTF moments, I'd make a comment about the nature of cookies and their crumbling or something, thank my opponent for his competition, and move on.

Also, I'm really REALLY confused as to how comments like "Huh." and "Wow." are johns. These are NOTHING BUT compliments, and usefully neutral comments. Who could not like hearing "Wow"? I mean, if you say it like an ***, that's a different matter. Also, I really very heavily on "huh" to keep my cool in a match. It's a completely harmless word, barely a breath of air! The question is a jerky response, much like "glitches" and "I have a life"; the exclamation (a comment, really), "huh," is a way of acknowledging events that are enlightening. Wouldn't you be happy to give your opponent a "huh" moment?

One last thing, I suppose I should ask. . . reading accounts of some people... one way I would deal with an event like.. say, stabby2846's, with Tingle's Balloon, is by giving a quick "lol" comment. I mean only to acknowledge how the game has countered my ignorance in this momentous reversal of fortune. I don't mean it to be belittling to my opponent but rather to reduce the impact of my own failure, possibly to share in the "lol" with my opponent.
Is that so bad?

A bit of a funny question

:confused:Anyone know where the term John came from

Was it from a random conversation or a player

It's always struck me as odd that its named like a person

btw guys Lolmaster thinks he's actually better than me because whenever he tries in a match, he wins.

...sounds like a violation of the book of John to me!!!!!!

lol You don't have to tell me that I'm better, it's just a matter of fact. So the answer is precisely zero.

:)
