NASB 2 is the worse one
Here is my wildly unrealistic roster for a 200-man Smash fangame - I have full creative control, and no baggage from past games or fan demand played much of a role.
is that mr x.

oh my god that's so based

Even though I don't really like the concept from a realistic perpsective, I've been meaning to a ludicrously large Smash roster for a while - maybe I should give it a shot?

I’m not gonna do a 200+ Smash roster just yet, but I’ve had an on again, off again fiddling around with a 5000 character roster doc that may eventually be completed, and some of these characters are noted, certainly.

By any chance the selection is merely based on your likes or there is more reasons for the selections? They are good but I'm kinda impressed for see characters like Crobat or White Mage apart of having the two Pits but not Palutena for some examples.
It's mainly based in my own interests and who I think would be the most interesting aesthetically.

However, I did intentionally make sure to include all of the original 12 Smash characters, and I enforced a rule that 10 characters would be considered clones of someone else.

Made a new take on a Super Smash Bros. reboot!

A 60-character roster for a SSB reboot? Mind if I throw in my two cents?

Super Mario: We have Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and Bowser. A perfect size for the franchise.
Mario Spinoffs: My one gripe here is that Funky Kong is the third DKC rep. I understand that he's meant to be a clone, but still.
Zelda: Two Links with different movesets, Ganon is the blue pig monster, and we get Vaati as the first non-Triforce wielder. I'd say the changes were for the better, with Sheik and Young Link being obvious cuts.
Fire Emblem: Marth, Roy, Robin, and Byleth. Those are the four I'd allow to stick around as well.
Pokemon: Who are the two newcomers? Also, would the likes of Mewtwo and Charizard at least appear as summons?
Metroid: Let's face it: We only needed Samus and Ridley.
Star Fox: Actually, I would also cut Wolf from the roster.
Mother: Kumatora replaces Lucas as the second fighter, but getting a newcomer from this series is still astonishing.
Kid Icarus: Maybe Palutena becomes an Assist Trophy?
Kirby: To admit with sheer honesty, Meta Knight isn't as mainstream as Kirby or Dedede are.
Xenoblade: Cutting Shulk in favor of Pyra and Mythra? I have mixed opinions on that, but I can see why you went there.
Punch-Out: I would have chosen King Hippo, but Mr. Sandman is equally as iconic as a second PO boxer goes.
Splatoon: Of course Octoling would make it in.
Retro Nintendo: Yes, I'm lumping Captain Falcon into the "retro" category, but between him, Duck Hunt, Mr. G&W, and ROB, we've got the best oldies remaining. Also, adding Prince Sable and Lip does add some appeal to longtime Smash fans.

Sonic the Hedgehog: It's about time we got another Sonic rep, and Eggman's good for the job.
Mega Man: Proto Man is in the game? Fair.
Street Fighter: If it came down to it, I would cut Ken with a lump in my stomach.
Pac-Man: Mrs. Pac-Man as a newcomer just makes me happy.
Rayman / Space Invaders: I'm glad to see them in here, although I wonder how the latter could fight.
Dragon Quest: Slime instead of the Heroes? Alright, it's your roster.
Associated Third-Parties: Is that Paimon? And what is that purple thing?
Kingdom Hearts: I'd cut both Cloud and Sephiroth if it meant Sora was in, and I'm not kidding.
Undertale: Are Sans and Papyrus a duo fighter? Why are they deemed as longshots on par with Sora and...
Popeye: POPEYE? You have Popeye in this roster? This excuses most of the disagreements I have with your roster if you pulled this stunt.

Honestly, despite a couple of things I wouldn't agree with, like the two Pokemon newcomers or cutting Shulk, Diddy Kong, and Cloud, the choices of newcomers make up for it in the long run.

The two new Pokemon are Crobat and Zorua.
Palutena would definitely be an Assist character, yes.
For the Space Invaders, you control the UFO and use the other Invaders as meatshields and projectiles. So, kind of like the between ground of Olimar and Rosalina.
Papyrus and Sans are credited as one character, but you only play as Papyrus. Sans, the lazy bones he is, just watches from the background, selling hot dogs.
That is not Paimon. It is the White Mage from Final Fantasy. And the "purple thing" is Baku from Yo-kai Watch.

Okay, so this is probably a weirder pick, but I think it'd be an interesting one to delve into: What if Sakurai didn't come back for Brawl?

According to what we know about the early stages of Brawl's conceptualisation, Satoru Iwata originally suggested that if he were director, he would have simply released a remastered port of Melee with online capabilities. With that in mind, I think it'd be interesting to conceptualise how that port might have looked, and some of the content that might have been potentially added to it (even if it'd admittedly be pretty minimal.)

With that in mind, let's see how Super Smash Bros. Melee: Encore would have looked!

RELEASE
Given that this game would only have been a port of Melee with a few changes, development would be unlikely to take as long as Brawl's did. With that in mind, I'm suggesting that the development of this port would also have started in October 2005, with the full design document being finalised by Feburary 2006 (which acts as our cutoff point for inclusions.) The game would have then been released for the holiday season of 2007, without Brawl's delayed development.

CHARACTERS
Probably the most controversial consideration - but Encore would have maintained Melee's base roster and not added any characters. I feel like, given how Sakurai has discussed his creative process for movesets and the like, it'd be unlikely that the new team would feel like they were equipped to add completely new picks, as much as I think it would be fantastic to see. However, some characters would be considered as holdovers from the original concept - these including Wario, Lucas, Snake, Sonic, Olimar and King Dedede. The idea of adding new characters at all would unfortunately be dropped. That said, certain characters would have a couple of changes, albeit purely cosmetic in nature.
  • Link, Zelda and Ganondorf would be redesigned to appear in their Twilight Princess forms.
  • Sheik would recieve a similar Twilight Princess-inspired redesign to that she recieved in Brawl.
  • Fox and Falco would be redesigned to appear in their Star Fox: Assault forms.
  • Captain Falcon would be redesigned to appear in his F-Zero GX form.
  • Mewtwo would also be slightly redesigned to appear a little "softer", akin to his look in Pokemon: The First Movie.
That being said, every character would now have six alternate costumes - all of which are simple palette swaps. These would be intended to reference other characters where possible, though unique textures wouldn't happen - so for instance, Mario's "stars and stripes" costume wouldn't be included.

STAGES
Every stage from Melee would return in Encore, albeit obviously with a few graphical touch-ups to make it look less like a game released in 2001. However, whilst I didn't feel that new characters would be reasonable, I do think it's a possibility that some new stages would be introduced.
  • Hyrule Castle and Saffron City would be brought into Encore as Past Stages from the first game, with a few touchups here and there but for the most part remaining true to their original vision.
  • Archanea would also be added as a de-facto Fire Emblem stage, utilsing the (admittedly limited) resources that were pooled into the original game to make this possible. In terms of appearance, it'd be similar to Castle Siege's first form, but without transformations.
  • Online Waiting Room would also be added, which is effectively a white-themed variation of Final Destination that can't be selected in typical play. This works akin to how it did in Brawl's WFC.
Yeah... that's it. As much as I'd like to suggest some more stages, I think this is a pretty decent (and honestly charitable) estimate of what might have happened for the time. Sorry, y'all.

MUSIC
That being said, I do think there's a possibility that stages would get a couple of additional music tracks. Don't get your hopes up, though - a lot of them are simply because other tracks enter the random rotation. For instance, Battlefield now has a chance of playing Multi-Man Melee and Multi-Man Melee 2 alongside just Battlefield. In other cases, direct gamerips from older (or related) games are used so that an orchestra isn't put to use - for example, Termina Field is pulled directly from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask to play as part of Great Bay's rotation, whereas Fire Emblem is no longer in Temple's rotation due to Archanea being added. No stage will have more than three songs - you can select their alternate songs by holding down either L or R when selecting the stage. There's also two bonus pieces of unlockable music that you'll only find in the Sound Test - I'll get to them later.

MODES
Again, for the most part Encore's modes would remain similar to the original game's. I will note, however, that the Sound Test is available from the start - and doesn't have to be unlocked. That said - the main new menu option of note is Wi-Fi! Utilising Nintendo WFC, it's possible to fight opponents online. You have two options - With Friends, or With Anyone. These matches allow you to fight your friends or complete in battles that have the same degree of rules customisation that a typical local match would have - including being able to engage in either a basic battle or a team battle. Not only this, but it's possible to send your replays and snapshots to your friends using Wi-Fi! However, there's no method of communicating with others online in order to alleviate concerns of potential bullying or misuse.

TROPHIES
Whilst the disappointing lack of new characters might be a bummer to some people, a reasonably large number of new trophies would be added - bringing the number of trophies from 290 to 350. Amongst other things, the trophies Tamagon, Mario and Yoshi, and Samus Unmasked would be included in the international release - and Captain Olimar would unlock if you have a Pikmin save file, but would also be unlockable through normal means. Several of these trophies would outright reuse models or sprites from relatively recent games, such as some later Gamecube or Game Boy Advance titles. As such, a lot of them wouldn't be overly exciting - I imagine at least 10 would just be new Pokémon models from Pokémon Colesseum - though some familiar characters, such as Lucas, would recieve trophies too.

Furthermore, to attempt to honour the original request of Hideo Kojima, Solid Snake would be included as the series' first third-party trophy - with Sonic the Hedgehog being second at the behest of Yuji Naka. Neither of them would, however, be playable. Upon unlocking them, Encounter (ripped directly from Metal Gear Solid) and Green Hill Zone (ripped directly from Sonic the Hedgehog) would be unlocked to listen to in the Sound Test, but can't be played on any stages.

ITEMS
Not much to report here. In terms of Pokéball Pokémon, Ditto finally functions as intended - similarly to its function in Ultimate. However, the Cloaking Device and Motion-Sensor Bomb items would be removed, due to potential licensing issues with Rare given their recent acquisition.

GAMEPLAY
I should note that this version of the game would be based on v1.02, which would include some of the bug fixes present in that version. However, in keeping with the vision of maintaining this as a port, certain gameplay elements would be kept in place mostly because removing or replacing them would lend to the game being pretty different - and remember, this doesn't need to be high-effort.

BONUS CONTENT
Six of the seven Bonuses that were cut from Classic Mode have been added back - these being Barrel Blast KO, Crash & Burn, Green Shell Shooter, Poolshark, Red Shell Shooter, and Richochet Rifler. The exception to this is Deflector, which is due to the fact that it's unclear what it actually would have rewarded you for. Furthermore, Archives is now accessible in all regions, containing the How To Play video, the Special Movie that was previously NTSC-exclusive, and the Opening Movie.

IN CLOSING
Whilst I think this would be a pretty interesting alternate universe to look into, I'm kind of curious how it would have affected the series going forward. Whilst I think I can speak for all of us when I say I'm kind of glad Brawl happened, it'd be a strange world where it didn't.

Since I'm getting brainrot from TMNT, I decided to create a TMNT tradifighting game based on various universes of the franchise. It's like "Turtles forever as fighting game". This isn't first time where TMNT has got a fighting game. I got 3 of them, but it won't hurt if we did a 4th one...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Multiversal Mayhem!
The game is a traditional 2.5D fighting game made by Arc System Works and it\s based on various variations of the franchise (minus the live action ones). It ranges from mirage comics to mutant mayhem universe. The game is similar to Guilty Gear and street fighter, but it's based on TMNT (it also takes cues from TMNT tournament fighters game from 1990's).

The roster:
1. Raphael (Mirage)
2. Leonardo (1987)
3. Michelangelo (2003)
4. Donatello (2012)
5. Shredder/Oroku Saki (1987)
6. Bebop (1987)
7. Rocksteady (2012)
8. April O'Neil (1987)
9. April O'Neil (ROTTMNT) (She would use her bat)
10. Krang (1987)
11. Splinter (2003)
12. Leatherface (2012)
13. Jennika (IDW)
14. Karai (Mirage)
15. Rat King (1987)
16. Slash (Archie)
17. Tokka & Rahzar (1987 & 2012)
18. Baxter Stockman (1987)
19. Lord Dregg (2012)
20. Bishop (2003)
21. Miyamoto Usagi (Dark horse)
22. Casey Jones (1987)
23. Hun (2003)
24. Ice Cream Kitty (2012) (Joke character)

Boss fighters:
1. Tengu Shredder
2. Superfly

Cowabunga pass 1:
1. Metalhead (1987)
2. Cassandra Jones (ROTTMNT)
3. Superfly (as playable)
4. Attila the Punk frog (1987)
5. Mutagen Man (2012)
6. Sol Badguy (Guest - due to being made by Arc System Works)

Cowabunga pass 2:
1. Umeko (TMNT Adventures)
2. Tiger claw (2012)
3. Tengu Shredder (as playable)
4. Wingnut (Mutant Mayhem - due to small amount of Mutant mayhem representation, I wanted him in form of 2023 movie)
5. Drako (2003)
6. Batman (Due to being connected to the franchise by comic crossover and Injustice 2)

(I didn't included live action versions because it would be too hard to redraw the realistic characters and that representation would look jarring comparing to drawn/animated ones. I'm allowing only drawn/animated universes of TMNT to get representation)

Note: I know some of variants of characters are kinda random, but i wanted to go with "multiverse" aspect where random incarnations of characters appear and I wanted to go little bit crazy due to TMNT being a crazy/juxtaposition franchise due to being a parody of superhero comics like creators of franchise said.

SEGA Superstars Skateboarding
1. Sonic
2. Tails
3. Knuckles
4. Alex Kidd
5. Lion Rafale
6. Ulala
7. Beat
8. Aiai
9. Ichiban Kasuga
10. Arle Nadja
11. Joker
12. Skull

Notes about how I made these character decisions:
  • Tried to make this roster “realistic” for the concept of a SEGA skateboarding game and part of that also meant characters who make sense with a skateboarding aesthetic so younger and more “hip” characters are emphasized. Well I guess Ichiban is 42 but you know what I mean.
  • I admit Lion Rafale is a bit of a weird pick but I felt like it might make sense to have someone who feels more like a “sports villain” and Lion’s rich boy personality definitely fits this
  • I imagine everyone would be in “skateboarder clothes” so imagine all those characters but dripped out
  • A character from Go Go Hypergrind was considered since that’s actually a Sega owned game about skateboarding but it’s extremely obscure and probably has some rights issues about it so maybe as DLC but not likely
  • The one helping you if you’re hurt is, I dunno, someone from Trauma Centre

Made a roster recently for a Microsoft fighting game. I decided 22 characters, which might seems fairly small but it was the size of Nasb roster incuding Garfield and Shredder. Also I figured I'd add Activision characters because at this point I doubt the acquisition is getting blocked.

1. Master chief (Halo)
2. Arbiter (Halo)
3. Marcus Fenix (Gears of war)
4. Kait Diaz (Gears of war)
5. Myrrah (Gears of war)
6. Banjo & Kazooie (Banjo-Kazooie)
7. Gruntilda (Banjo-Kazooie)
8. Conker (Conker)
9. Joanna Dark (Perfect dark)
10. Fulgore (Killer instinct)
11. Jago (Killer instinct)
12. Rash (Battletoads)
13. Blinx (Blinx)
14. Ori (Ori)
15. Raz (Psychonauts)
16. Steve (Minecraft)
17. Hero of Oakvale (Fable)
18. Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot)
19. Spyro (Spyro the dragon)
20. Doomguy (Doom)
21. Dohvakkin (The elder scrolls)
22. Chai (Hifi rush)

And dlc:
1. Kameo (Kameo elements of power)
2. Eddie Riggs (Brutal legend)
3. Tracer (Overwatch)
4. Vault boy (Fallout)
5. Corvo Attano (Dishonored)

Paper Mario
The Emblem Chronicles

Story
The tales of many a hero have been chronicled for centuries, all spanning across different worlds and different times. One day, however, a dark entity known only as the Fell Blaze seeks to erase all of history by burning the chronicles down to the last cinder. Elimine, an ancient hero who has seen the countless legends herself, sends 12 of the fabled heroes and herself inside a book chronicling the stories of an even greater hero…Mario. Following the word of Elimine, Mario and his allies must travel across the world forged from the remains of the other heroes’ chronicles and find Emblem Cards that can summon them in corporeal form.

The main gameplay takes inspiration from Trails in the Sky; Mario mostly travels on an overworld and can engage enemies by touching them (or, if you prefer, jumping on them or smacking them with a hammer). The actual battles take place on a grid where you can select units to move or attack, but the twist is that the actual combat is closer to Paper Mario 64’s gameplay. This is mixed in with the Emblem Cards, which offer different abilities based on the character represented by the card.
  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Peach
  • Toad
  • Bowser
  • Bowser Jr.
  • Marth
  • Alm & Celica
  • Sigurd
  • Leif
  • Roy
  • Lyn
  • Ephraim & Eirika
  • Ike
  • Micaiah
  • Lucina
  • Corrin
  • Byleth
(Basically, I designed this to be an alternate take on Engage)

Okay, but do the Fire Emblem characters look like Paper Mario characters in this game or not?

Kind of? They’d be based on their Heroes sprites…which sport a similar enough art style that one wouldn’t look too out of place when placed next to the other.

Impossible Size Smash Roster because I like to participate in trends even if it was like a week ago goddamn that's a long name for a game.
100% fun and bias drived.
Some of these characters aren't like favorites of mine but I saw some concepts for them that I find very cool.

If the torder seems quite odd, is not only me lacking the ability to actually arrange in perfect squares a roster, but I also dislike when the franchises are cut in parts so I tried to mantain all the characters from a series in the same row

Classic as the default Sonic design is incredibly based - that being said, it's cancelled out by plumber being the default Wario design. Ew.

It's mostly to reflectthe idea that I saw of a moveset more based in his platform games, I like the WarioWare design more too but it was moreso that just for that, I ain't like a Sonic fan but I like more the classic sonic look too.

My ideal Echo lineup. Barring characters who already have echoes and being able to make minor skeleton tweaks if need be. Cross-series is only in effect for the "retro" franchises, but their replacement picks must remain in that pantheon.
  • Mario: Jumpman
  • DK: Funky Kong (different aerials)
  • Link: Twilight Link (reverted grab/Down Special)
  • Yoshi: Boshi

A while back I made a newcomer roster for an Ultimate sequel, don't know if I ever posted it here, but I just added some echoes, and kinda feel like going through why I went with the characters I did

I'll do the unique characters first, since a lot of the reasoning for the echoes was derived from gaps in this set. The aim here was to please both Celebration-of-Gaming fans and Nintendo All-Stars fans, and fill perceived gaps in the roster without just overloading it with fan-requests. Realism wasn't considered.
  1. Waluigi is the fan demand pick of the 1Ps. That's really the whole rationale. Of the major 1P fan picks, he's my favourite, and also probably the most popular from a mainstream perspective.
  2. Impa, Midna, and Tingle were all in response to a percieved lack of Zelda rep. There aren't really any fully agreed upon Zelda reps who are overwhelmingly wanted by fans, even if Ninja Impa and Skull Kid seem to be more popular, that isn't overwhelming. Impa was chosen for her importance, with Elderly Impa being chosen in specific for making up the majority of Impa appearances and lending herself to a more unique moveset, along with a lack of geriatric characters in fighting games. this was before the nasb 2 leak I tried to make sure the female characters were unlike the usual female characters of Smash, since most of the women in Smash fall into the camp of "slender, pretty, human, young adult" - not that there's anything wrong with that alone (as you'll see with a later 1P pick), but it's nice to have more diverse female designs.
  3. I really like Midna's character design, and I think that her whole hair thing lends itself to a fun moveset. TP fans were probably disappointed by Ultimate, so she fills that niche. Being a non-human female character is also an advantage she brings.
  4. A lack of modern Kirby rep is a common criticism of Smash, and Susie fills that niche, being a bit of a fan favourite from what many consider the definitive best Kirby game. She also has a very abstract design, which is fun, especially for a female character.
  5. Youngster was a me pick - I wanted more Gen 1, and I wanted a weaker, sillier Pokemon like Squirtle, Jigglypuff, and Pichu before him. While there are other Pokemon that fit either or both descriptors I'd prefer, I think Youngster's trio (Pidgey, Rattata, and Zubat) is so iconic that it's hard to really shoot down or view as "random", and a second Pokemon stance fighter has been a common request since Brawl.
  6. The lack of legendary Pokemon representation in Smash is quite bizarre from an objective standpoint, and Genesect just fits Smash perfectly as a mobile, powerful, and fast creature. Gen 5 is, like Robobot, often considered the best Pokemon game, so it makes sense to represent it here.
  7. While not particularly popular Smash requests, Callie and Marie are in a similar spot to Isabelle as being overwhelmingly popular outside of that niche, and probably having a large support base that's just silent and doesn't frequent Smash forums.
  8. Rhythm Heaven has been a popular Smash pick for a while, and had a few devastating close calls. Yuka was chosen because she's so generic that she can basically do anything. Hanging on to a rocket, partaking in a quiz show, slashing a sword - she could basically do anything because she's just... a girl who hangs out with monkeys. Unlike Karate Joe, the Chorus Boys, or the Wandering Samurai who are all very specific in themes. Rhythm games are also not yet repped in Smash
  9. Tingle is a bit of a me pick, he's very much a popular character, and has received quite a bit of re-evaluation in recent years from the Westerners who once got him banned from the Zelda series. I think I like Tingle as a sort of way of saying "hey, the dust has settled, you want to give this guy another go?" choice. I also like that he represents a spin-off series that isn't Mario.
  10. Going into third parties, the reasons will be a lot more simple since 3Ps are nowhere near as comprehensive as they exist today. Case in point: Dr. Eggman. Sonic is underrepped, villains are underrepped, Eggman is one of the most iconic villains and one of the most iconic Sonics.
  11. Blanka was a me pick of sorts. It doesn't really make sense to only rep a fighting game series, known for its wide cast, with the basic protagonist - and Blanka is my favourite of the SF cast.
  12. M-rated games are underrepped, gritty games are underrepped, Western games are underrepped - these 3 things were all being kept in mind heavily for 3Ps. CJ is a somewhat humourous pick that would catch people off-guard and get people talking - but, like Steve, makes perfect sense when you step back and forget about the Smash discourse and fan rules.
  13. Sub-Zero basically has the same reasoning as CJ, even if not exactly as memetic. I chose Sub-Zero over Scorpion simply because I think ice is more unique, with there only really being one character in Smash who is mostly ice-based. Also a bit interesting as a series that has infamously flopped in Japan. MK also has an interesting role in Nintendo history, which would give SZ's inclusion a bit of irony factor.
  14. Kratos is the most iconic PlayStation character, and falls under the gritty Western M-rated camp. I think I would want to encourage a Nintendo-based audience to learn more about PS.
  15. PaRappa supplements Kratos as a sort of way to say to Nintendo fans "hey, PlayStation does silly kiddie stuff too!". A lot of PaRappa fans haven't played the games, so it's very likely that he has a bigger fandom overlap with Nintendo than any other PS character. Also technically the first rhythm game (this title is somewhat dubious, but mostly correct) so a nice game to honour. Also a me-pick, as should be obvious
  16. Master Chief fills the big 3 criteria I was looking for, and also properly represents Xbox after two non-Xbox-associated Microsoft reps.
  17. Nintendo fans don't like Call of Duty - at all, it almost has a cryptid-like status where nobody in the Nintendo scene knows anything about it, but hates it for... killing platformers or something (which it didn't). Ghost is probably the most controversial non-echo on the roster for this, so I guess you could call him an "evil pick". I think a game this big should probably be represented somehow, and it'd be nice to try and quell the sheer hatred Nintendo fans have for COD, even if it'd be at its most intense before the reveal sets in. Ghost was chosen because the mask gives him a slightly more stylised edge.
  18. Adventurer? Want to teach Nintendo fans about history, simple really. I chose the square over the dragons/ducks/seahorses because well... playing as a faceless square is funny, and feels more representative of "character design" of the era.

Now, the echoes, these were a little more driven by personal bias.
  1. Dr. Bowser is THE joke pick. I have no non-comedic justification for him, that's why he got in. Just a weird, obscure, excessively nonsensical pick who gets a quick laugh every time you hover over him on the CSS. While I like Igglybuff and Small Mario better for this role, I think that Dr. Bowser benefits from being more obscure (being from a defunct mobile game), the sheer juxtaposition of a powerful monster being a professional heathcare expert, and technically being a mixture of two Smash characters. It all just culminates in something very bizarre and questionable, wheras Small Mario and Igglybuff are well known characters in their own right regardless of how frail they are.
  2. Paula is just a very obvious pick - all of Ness' moves are from her, why wouldn't she get in as an echo? Plus, she is really the true hero of EarthBound all things considered. I think having female echoes of male characters is a very good thing to do, so people who want to play as a woman but like the moveset of another character could have an option.
  3. Malos was a response to a mistake I feel I made with the initial version - an overcorrection on "anime swordfighters".
  4. While the other 2 retro picks are third party, The Amazon is for the retro Nintendo fans specifically. I also think cross-series echoes are fun, and The Amazon makes a lot of sense since few of Incin's moves are that heavily themed, while Pro Wrestling is a very popular NES title.
  5. The Classic Sonic games are near-universally regarded as the series' peak, so it's frankly a little bizarre as is that the series' representation leans so much towards the modern games. Hell, I could imagine Modern Sonic being the one with the echo e and adjective in his name this go around.
  6. Most of the 3P picks here are general gaming history picks rather than Nintendo picks, with Blanka as the main and barely-counting exception - Roll is here to somewhat remedy that, so the Nintendo side of the fandom gets a pick they're more familiar with in the 3P pool. I chose her over ProtoMan for the same reason I mentioned for Paula earlier.
  7. Zack Fair was added for the same reason as Malos. Additionally, FF is such a big deal that it'd be strange to not give it a 3rd rep.
  8. Giana is a historical curio, which I think is fun. I regretted not putting in a microcomputer rep (I couldn't think of one who didn't overlap somehow with Adventurer), and I think having a rip-off game represented as an echo fighter is just very cheeky and clever. This Giana would have a design similar to her original version instead of the Twisted Dreams version to further drive in the intent as a microcomputer rep, but would also be less ugly and a little more cartoonish, sorta like a reverse Pit. I think it's nice to represent something Nintendo were previously against, like with Sub-Zero earlier.

Something I brought up in a conversation earlier today was how I personally think that Gameboy Smash Bros. concepts sort of limit themselves because of their tendency to only include around six fighters (whether this is due to Super Smash Land or a desire to include less than Super Smash Bros., I'm not 100% sure.) That said, fighting games on the Game Boy weren't actually as small as you might expect - hell, The King of Fighters '95 had no less than 18 unique characters, including the port-exclusive Nakoruru!

Oh - and as for controls, the fact that there's only two action buttons shouldn't be a problem. Directional inputs coupled with a Normal or Special attack input should suffice, with the D-Pad being used to jump in the Up position. It was pretty common for ported fighting games to the console to use a unique Light/Heavy attack system with the two buttons like that, so that's what I'd suggest. Unfortunately, this means grabbing and throwing aren't available yet - but it does make it possible to have both directional Normal and Special attacks, even if we don't have a difference between tilts and smash attacks yet.

That said, I ended up wondering to myself - if the first Smash game had been a Game Boy title released circa early 1996, what could its roster have looked like? Introducing... Smash Bros.! (Yes, it isn't Super yet. Shh.)

You'll note that this is a somewhat... eclectic mix, even by today's standards - but I think this is a genuinely good indication of Nintendo's output at around this time. The immediate elephant in the room is the lack of Pokémon content - but given the release date was specifically picked to avoid it, I felt it'd allow for a bit more focus on a pretty interesting period in Nintendo's history! Also, no clones - I felt characters like Luigi or Dark Link, whilst possible, would be illogical on a monochrome screen with only four colours.

Anyways, let's look at the roster one-by-one:
  • Mario is obviously our first character, though I should note that his design here is predominantly based on a fusion between his Super Mario Land series appearances with small elements from Super Mario World - though he'd mostly use items in his moveset as opposed to relying purely on his own physicality. Not much to comment on here aside from that, though.
  • Link comes second, and he's based primarily on his look in Link's Awakening though also on A Link to the Past. He'd fight predominantly using his array of items with differing effects, coupled with sword swings to bring it all together. That said, he wouldn't bring over a magic meter or anything like that, mostly just relying on fairly basic items overall - some of which we've seen in Smash like the Hookshot, Boomerang and Bow, and others we haven't yet seen like the Mirror Shield and the Pegasus Boots.
  • Kirby is third, with a moveset predominantly inspired by his Game Boy titles with little hints of other titles. He mainly fights using Copy Abilities, but I do think his Animal Friends would also make for a fun and cool inclusion on top of that. As for whether to include his Smash Bros. ability to copy other fighters... sure, why not! He'd only copy their Neutral Special, though.
  • Donkey Kong Jr. is a bit more unorthodox. See, Donkey Kong himself would make a lot of sense here - but Jr. feels like he'd fulfil the role of a true "retro" pick a lot better, whilst also having some degree of relevance considering his appearances in games like Super Mario Kart and Mario's Tennis. It's also partially because I think representing Donkey Kong Country would sort of necessitate the use of digitized sprites, which... I don't think look very good on the Game Boy. His moveset would, as such, predominantly be pulled from the arcade Donkey Kong titles - using various elements, like his father's barrels, Stanley's bug spray, and even Jumpman's whip!
  • Samus is predomianantly inspired by her appearance in Super Metroid, with some elements from Metroid II: Return of Samus. In terms of her gameplay, she's intended to more closely mirror her source material with a generally more mobile nature, though her focus on projectiles does still land her in the role of a zoner. I wouldn't have her as complex as some fans have suggested in the past, but I would include various items like the Ice Beam for the sake of representing a wider variety of her own repertoire.
  • Marth is probably the biggest departure from his Smash Bros. incarnation, in that his moveset is intended to reflect the gameplay of the Fire Emblem series as opposed to just the concepts behind his own design. Whilst he does maintain stylish sword slashes, his specials involve him "summoning" characters of different classes from Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, which each have a unique attack of their own. He's also designed to mirror his appearance later in the first game, having both the Falchion and the Fire Emblem shield.
And, as for unlockable fighters...
  • Wario is here as our main "antagonist", picked over Bowser because of his growing popularity at the time and the fact that he was blossoming into his own series at this point! As such, his design is primarily based on that of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, though with minor elements of his boss battle in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins at play as well.
  • Ayumi Tachibana might seem unorthodox, but I think she'd be a genuinely good pick as another "retro" character, on top of representing another new genre - visual novels! The Famicom Disc System had quite a few prominent games that I considered representing, with me also considering Shin Onigashima, but I felt that given Famicom Detective Club was also seeing Satellaview rereleases, she'd be an awesome pick. As for her moveset, she relies on an unorthodox mixture of items and objects from that series, fighting mostly with her handbag in terms of her normals.
  • Lip is another instance of a seemingly odd pick who I think makes more sense when you really consider it. Panel de Pon was a decently popular SNES game, and Tetris Attack did get ported to the Game Boy - plus, the Game Boy had a variety of puzzle games that made it popular with a wider group of people overall. I wanted a puzzle rep of some kind, and felt Lip would be far more interesting than Dr. Mario.
  • Sukapon is our last character, picked partially because of his unusual placement in one of the Famicom's last games, but also because I genuinely think he'd be a good fit for a game like this - already being from a fighting series! Some of his moves will be pulled directly from the original, with a couple of others here and there being pulled from other characters in Joy Mech Fight as required.
I think that does a good job of representing a decent swathe of Nintendo's output at around this time - primarily biased toward platformers, but with a decent variety of takes on the formula, whilst also introducing a good variety of genres beyond that (action RPG, arcade?, tactical RPG, visual novel, puzzle and fighting) which results in a decently varied character roster overall. As for some notable omissions beyond the aforementioned, some honourable mentions:
  • A MOTHER character came pretty close to making it in, with me originally considering either Paula or Ness for the role, but I kind of ended up struggling to justify how they'd turn out in a game like this. The ability to represent their psychic effects and abilities would be difficult on a console like this, and when it came down to the wire, I felt that the unlockables I did include were just a better representation of Nintendo's output overall.
  • Donbe or Hikari as a Disc System rep as opposed to Ayumi, though I ended up deciding Ayumi was just more fun and potentially interesting.
  • Basically any third-party pick was also briefly considered, but I quickly shut that down after deciding it'd make more sense for Nintendo to keep this first game completely in-house (even though some Intelligent Systems/HAL characters were here, but shhh.)
    • Mega Man was actually at the top of my list in this regard, considering his continual prominence and association with the Famicom, Super Famicom, and Game Boy... but I felt he ran the risk of overlap with Samus in terms of moveset and general concept, plus as a third-party character, he was a little difficult to justify to begin with.
  • Bowser, who I actually almost included, before deciding that the trio of Mario, Donkey Kong Jr. and Wario was a better group for this specific time period. Don't get me wrong, he'd be cool - I just felt that he wasn't quite a good fit for what we already had going on.

Wherever good books are sold.
Made a NASB 2 that I'd do if I were in charge and had a base roster size of 40.

Do note that while not all the leaked NASB 2 characters are on the roster, the majority of them are, so spoiler warning.

Oblina, Krumm, and Ickis are a PokeTrainer-style team, Fanboy and Chum Chum are like Banjo and Kazooie, and the Angry Beavers are like Pythra.

Blue and Mr. Crocker are free DLC ala Garfield and Shredder in NASB 1, while the 3x2 grid is paid DLC.

Disney Roster. Tired to play it more realistically

  • Mickey Mouse is the only series to get more than two reps because it's Mickey feaking Mouse.
  • Scrooge is our only TVA rep.
  • Snow White is here to rep the princesses. Fights by summoning animals and dwarfs
  • Pincchio kinda stumbles his way though a fight. he can use his nose and even call on the Blue Fairy.
  • Peter Pan would have a sort of Luma thing going on with Tinkerbell
  • Cruella has a playstyle that reflects her cruel nature. She can drive her car around and have Jasper and Horace do her dirty work. Sort of like a skinny Wario
  • Tigger was chosen over Pooh due to more moveset potential.
  • Ursula was chosen due to Arial being, well, a mermaid and also wanting some more villains
  • Genie was chosen due to just being personally more interesting
  • Timon and Pumba are one of two duo fighters, with Timon riding Pumba's back, like Ren & Stimpy from NASB. I figured Lion King was a big enough series to get two reps, being one of only two series to get that treatment.
  • Maui was chosen due to having a more fun gameplay style and unique body build
  • No Encanto. There wasn't a moveset I liked enough
  • Kronk is the wild card pick. A true heavy, he'd have attacks that reflect his clumsy nature
  • Kermit would be kinda like Octodad from Freymakers
  • I'm not a fan of the Pirates films nor am I fond of the weird cult that are Johnny Depp fans, but I figure if they did a live action character it would be him
  • Toy Story is the other series to get two reps, I considered a team up between them but I didn't want too many duos and I had a different idea for a Pixar duo
  • Mike and Sully fight together like the Ice Climbers, but you can control which one is in front, which changes their moveset.
  • Elestagirl was chosen over Mr. Incredible due to an already having quite a few big bruiser types and also just having a more interesting moveset
  • Miguel uses music to fight and also some stuff with the dead
  • Mei is weak in her human form but can build up meter to transform into her Panda form
  • Figment is there as a rep for the Parks. He would be one of two unlockables
  • Merlin is there due to how weirdly prevalent he is in Disney crossover games. He's the other unlockable and is the narrator of the Adventure Mode
  • Chernabog is the final boss of Adventure Mode. It's a more simple melee styled affiar

I get why you replaced final fantasy with dragon warrior but I think final fantasy would still be better IMO since dragon warrior is a little hard to get into for new players of RPGs while final fantasy still holds up really well. This is just a “what’s the best for a new player” perspective tho

So I had a new idea for a Nintendo crossover fighting games. The game is called Nintendo heroines. The idea is based on SNK Heroines. If you haven't heard about this game, the basic concept is that it's a crossover of many SNK characters, but it's unique because it only used SNK female characters. I thought this was a cool concept because Nintendo actually have more female characters if you look deeper in their games, and it open the doors to a lot of characters that would have little to no chances to be in Smash.

Before posting the roster, here's a few rules that I gave myself before people ask "why is (character name) not here?"
1. No character that gender is not really clear. The character must be clearly female (which is why I didn't add Birdo because Nintendo seems to have retcon the trans thing, but I didn't want to go there)
2. No avatar or characters that can be both gender (so no Fire emblem avatars or Pokémon for example aside from stuff like Nidoqueen or Miltank).
3. No third party. This is Nintendo heroines, not Smash heroines.
4. No OC or gender swap character. Yeah this might be obvious, but since the game I'm basing the roster on have Cutie Terry, I'm specifically saying it. No, Cutie Mario (or Maria?) won't be here even if it's Nintendo's mascot.

With that out of the way here's the 35 characters roster:
1. Peach (Super Mario)
2. Daisy (Super Mario)
3. Rosalina (Super Mario)
4. Toadette (Super Mario)
5. Plum (Super Mario)
6. Pauline (Donkey kong)
7. Dixie kong (Donkey kong)
8. Ashley (WarioWare)
9. Captain Syrup (Wario land)
10. Zelda (Legend of Zelda)
11. Impa (Legend of Zelda)
12. Marin (Legend of Zelda)
13. Midna (Legend of Zelda)
14. Urbosa (Legend of Zelda)
15. Paya (Legend of Zelda)
16. Linkle (Legend of Zelda)
17. Samus (Metroid)
18. Krystal (Star fox)
19. Adeline (Kirby)
20. Cynthia (Pokémon)
21. Paula (Earthbound)
22. Jody Summer (F-zero)
23. Lyn (Fire emblem)
24. Micaihah (Fire emblem)
25. Lucina (Fire emblem)
26. Tiki (Fire emblem)
27. Edelgard (Fire emblem)
28. Palutena (Kid icarus)
29. Isabelle (Animal crossing)
30. Pyra/Mythra (Xenoblade)
31. Mio (Xenoblade)
32. Marie (Callie is a skin) (Splatoon)
33. Ayumi Tachibana (Famicom detective club)
34. Lip (Panel de pon)
35. Sami (Advance wars)

And here's the roster in image format:
