I really appreciate the kind words re: my commentary. I really enjoyed doing it for MLG, but I'm not sure it belongs at fan-run tournaments.
At MLG I explained the gameplay, I gave background on rivalries and such, and gave non-smashers an idea of what was difficult and what was a gamble and what was intense. The viewers of these videos will be mostly min-experts themselves, so why do we need commentary?
And no offense intended, but these days I just mute all of the youtube videos I watch because the commentary is useless and oftentimes annoying. It just seems like a series of inside jokes and passing the mic back and forth.
Maybe it's just me because I've always seen smash as a competitive sport, but these videos are just for other smashers, I'd like it if we could preserve the music and sound effects to preserve the integrity of the match.
So I vote "no" to commentary at Pound 4.
Wife, I definitely understand where your feelings on commentary are coming from. A lot of the commentary on YTed matches in the last year is really stupid and has caused part of the smash community to loser respect for commentary. That's exactly the reason you SHOULD commentate.
Yes, the crowd at fan-run tournaments is going to have a much better understanding of the game and won't need commentary as basic as the MLG commentary you did. You still have an understanding of the mechanics and psychology of the game that's better than at least, what, 80-90% of the people who will see the video in the end, and it really does help bring more sophisticated gameplay alive for people like me who haven't played long enough to know all the stuff that you take for granted.
Someone also made the valid point that things like informative commentary are what keep this game open to newcomers. If we treat every tournament in a way that caters ONLY to the most experienced veterans, how can we expect to interest new players in the smash community and its events? I think we should behave as if this tournament is of interest to people at ALL skill levels, and not just mini-experts (even if they comprise the majority of the demographic).
The video's integrity can be preserved if we mix recorded sound from the GC with the actual commentary (and, of course, the crowd reactions!). Or, for that matter, we could upload non-commentated versions of matches, too, for players who, like yourself, prefer to watch their matches unadulterated.
Either way, I strongly urge you to reconsider your position. Bring integrity back to commentating!
