If I ever get my game concept off the ground, I have the feeling its fandom will be wrongly labelled as “toxic” for really stupid reasons and I’ll have to stand up for it.

I kinda see myself as the cool game dev who encourages fans to sell custom merchandise on Redbubble, gives approval to all fan art (including R34), helps fan projects, e.t.c.

Really as long as my characters aren’t used to spread hate, intolerance, or violence I’m fine with any way of them being interpreted.

I watched a video on why Roger Rabbit would never be created today, and one of the comments (not the video) said it wouldn’t be “PC enough”.

Like... literally nothing about Roger Rabbit could be interpreted as offensive, except MAYBE Jessica, but even then she’s actually a character and really not that sexualised compared to other cartoon characters, even those aimed at children.

This is the age of Rick and Morty, South Park and Family Guy - cartoons don’t offend people any more unless they’re actually problematic and not just playing it up for a laugh. Back when Roger Rabbit came out the Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy were considered offensive.

The concept of Kemono Friends is pretty creepy to me. Not because of the animation, not because of animals turning into cute girls, but rather because well... logistically it’s really messed up. So, all the animals at the zoo have turned into humans... and they keep them in the zoo? And use them as attractions? This is horrifying! I can take some objectively unnerving concepts being reworked as cute or silly, but this is... no. Just no. Am I missing some important context? I really cannot understand how the questions this raises could’ve passed by the creators’ heads.

Political humour in media, especially animation with how long it takes to make (looking at you modern Simpsons and Animaniacs reboot) only really works with either foresight or perpetuity. Topical event-related jokes work fine as social media posts, but for comedies that can’t be made in 6 seconds you should wait until they’ve long passed so the mention can be surprising and everybody knows the full story. Jokes about political inevitabilities that have been going on forever with no sign of stopping also work just fine and have the potential to age like a fine wine.

I know game design wasn’t really a thing in the early 80s, but even then I can’t help but feel a little frustrated that no 80s shmups replicated the shield system of Space Invaders. That was where the whole strategy of the game kicked in, and games like Galaga would’ve been better off with some variation of it.

Continuing from that last status, I have come up with a theory about the development of Arms: A certain Shintaro Jikumaru discovered the secret of multiversal travel and ventured into an alternate universe where Sega’s mascot is Ristar. He played through the Ristar back catalogue and when he got to Ristar Adventure 2 Battle, he decided to play the non-fleshed-out multiplayer minigame mode. Inspiration struck and combined with Jikumaru’s desire to make a game with a large fan wiki Arms was born. Unfortunately, the team was so caught up with the fact people couldn’t logically trace its origins that they didn’t think to extend the gameplay beyond that of Ristar Adventure 2 Battle’s multiplayer mode
