Hot take: I'd love to see a collectathon game try to usurp DK64's collectable count.
I feel like DK64's problem was less "there's too many collectables" and more "there's too many different collectables", there's no need for Boss Keys to be a thing when you could just have a set amount of golden bananas free K. Lumsy while bosses give extra golden bananas for example - funnily enough I feel the closest-in-size collectathon (to my knowledge) Mario Odyssey had the opposite problem: there's not enough different types of Moon - so you get the same reward for completing a perfect-precision platforming challenge as you'd get for following the rumble feature to a random area in a room.
