What motivates you?

I came across this question when my friends and I got into a deep conversation as to why we all decided to study towards becoming engineers, and pretty much what gets us through the tough times we've faced/will face. I figured this would be a fun question to ask here on smashboards so what the hey.

I'd like to ask the question more generally, what motivates you? Whether its motivation to do well in school, your job or just to get through the day.

For me, I have a lot of reasons but I wouldn't want to bore you so I won't go too deep. My grandparents are old and they've done a lot for me, and so have my parents, so I want to succeed with my life and do well in order to make them proud. Especially my grandparents since they're getting older by the day, and regrettably they don't have much time left. They, as well as my parents, came here from China to give me a life with more opportunities so I want them to be proud and know that I did something with my life. I also have 3 younger brothers and I want to be a good role model for them, someone they can look up too. These are pretty much my reason for living lol.

That's really concerning...and yet I relate, not with Melee, though. My motivation is the Lord my God, He's what stopped me from committing suicide a few years ago. Since then I never looked back and I'm a completely different person since then. I hope that one day I can help someone else move from where I was onto better things. Life is a gift, don't spit in God's face by wasting yours away--much less taking it away.

A God who saves me from death, and that I can serve.
A woman who will help me serve Him and will love me and I her.
A best friend to help me hold on to the other two.

If I have these three things I will never ever doubt the value of life. As it is, I don't. But if I had to have three things that would fill me, these would be them.

I don't really have anything specific that motivates me. I just...don't want to fail. =3 Whenever I see myself or somebody else do something that seems stupid, wasteful, or destrictive to me, I refuse to let myself do anything like that in the future. I suppose you could call that self-improvement, but I don't have any particular aspirations; I just generally want to try and do useful things and avoid doing stupid things. I want to be the best person I can be.

What motivates me is doing something for a greater good such as helping others. I like to see good things happen in life and this motivates me to do the best at something as long as it has a positive purpose. Also the fear of the afterlife as well. The thought of a possible afterlife gives me motivation.

When it comes to things such as sports, video and board games than my motivation comes from the love of the game and doing what I can to make it more enjoyable. My motivation rises even more when the skill level gets higher and I can compete at it such as basketball, Melee/Brawl and Scrabble for instance.

Lastly, staying committed to something keeps me motivated. This is true for me in things like running. If I train for months I get faster and have more endurance and then it becomes more fun. Same goes for Spanish. I stared taking it 2 years ago and now I've learned much more than I could have imagined.

Wow.
My parents are Vietnamese and I was born in Australia. They sacrificed a lot to get where they are today and have given me and my siblings their all, yet even though I see how hard my parents work I'm still lazy and procrastinate. My grades have been sliding.
This is a real wake up call.

Someone asked me this the other day and I didn't have an answer. I actually spent a long while thinking about it.

I don't want to be bad at my job when I graduate. In fact, I'm terrified of being so. I guess that's my motivation right now. Before this, though, I'm not sure what my real motivation in life has been. That's odd, I guess?
