Because they just happen to be the some of the best players in the US? If all the best players played only Mewtwo for 5 years and won all tournaments using Mewtwo, it doesn't mean Mewtwo would randomly become the best character in the game.
Tiers do not dictate the results, they merely give you a pretty accurate guess.

Coming from someone who enjoys the character: I'm pretty sure Young Link has several advantages over Link that make him superior. Sure his sword isn't as long, but his multi hitting bombs, speed, and ability to juggle opponents across the level with just the running attack make him way better IMHO.

You're not the first one to say this and not the first to be proven wrong because honestly it just doesn't work the way you're suggesting..>_>
First off, link can't die as quickly as young link, with proper DI Link can survive for a very long time.
He out ranges Y.link in virtually every way, range means a lot in this game.
He has more killing power with this moves which make him a better character to kill with, furthermore his edge guarding potential isn't bad at all.
The only thing Y.link has that might be better then link is a better spam game, but links spam game isn't even that bad, so really why? lol

Marth Fox Falco Sheik for top tier, the order within that tier I'm not to particular about. But those 4 are definitely the best 4 in the game.
After that I'd argue Icys and Jiggs are the next best, and deserve a tier of their own.
Icys have even and even matchup with Fox Falco and Marth and slightly counter Sheik. Their hardest matchup is Peach, who is seeing less play in tournaments.
Jiggs too, has relatively even matchups with 3 of the top 4, and a slight counter in Marth. Jiggs also has few hard counters and her recent success in large tournaments I think drives this movement upwards.
Peach CF and Samus belong in the tier below these two because they have hard counters with many of the top tier: Peach Fox and Marth, CF Fox and Falco, Samus Sheik and Marth.

I'll stop discussing there; Doc, Ganon and Mario may belong on the same tier as Peach CF and Samus but I haven't thought that far down the tier list in a while.
But one key point to make here, is the Japanese tier list may be accurate for FD and DL64, but no one should ignore the advantages BF FoD Pkstm and YS (not to mention other counterpicks) bring to certain characters like Ganon Marth and take away from Mario and Doc. (Other characters are less obvious.)

I agree for the most part. The top 4 are really interchangeable. I feel the japanese tier list is accurate minus Icy's low placement. Jiggly and Icy's have proven themselves, but just because a few individual players have shown their true potential (Mango, ChuDat), doesn't change their actual Tier standing vs. the whole cast.
I feel the next tier list for melee (if it ever exists) should be seperated more like the Japanese Tier list:

As in, all the people in Bracket A are relatively even, but generally have an advantage over Bracket B. There are so many variables in each matchup and different opinions from all over the place, this might be the easiest way to organize it.... that or we just leave the present one alone.

I think Kirby should be at the bottom. Seriously, Mewtwo has potential (not to say he's good, just decent), he can go 0-80% on fast fallers quite easily, but Kirby has some serious limits, and overall is a very poor character.

it pains me to c IC up there. I know they good but they r only there bc of the infinite. Were it not for that Chu DAt would prob be the only real IC plyr. And rlly tier doenst necesarilly mean best character, it means the character with the greatest win %. Sheik is probly the most commonly used character but bc there r bttr plyrs with fox, falco, peach, sheik, n marth they r top tier.

I'm gonna have to agree. Doc, sadly, hasn't proven himself to be worthy of suppressing the might of the jiggles recently. Possibly beating out Samus too.

I agree, except Doc/Mario >> Ganon. Also Doc >> Mario. So thus: Doc > Mario > Ganon, in fact if you put Doc and Mario in the high midtier it would be right.
