So SFAT was telling me about NWM in which case he got second in teams with Axe. Then he told me that they only got $50 each for second place in teams at a REGIONAL. Apparently teams was $10 PER TEAM and singles was $15. This got me thinking. There are a few larger tournaments that have teams quite a bit cheaper than singles. Why is this? Do people not care much for teams?

Personally, I think teams is just as competitive and HARDER than singles. So why is it treated as such a lesser event?

I'd love it if people had consistent teammates and there were well known teams like back in the day so we could even begin teams rankings.

It's hard to follow what's going on for many people, so it sometimes feels like a big headache to watch. I imagine strategy isn't as big in teams for many people as well, so it can be kind of hard to watch talented singles players flop around aimlessly in doubles.

But yeah basically people don't care as much about teams LOL.

I personally enjoy teams and wish very sorely that I had a static teammate that I could always strategize with and work with at majors. Doubles has plenty of depth to it and I'd love to see more intricate doubles games.

I like the last line of the OP a lot, even if the rankings would be kinda crazy to do lol.

Teams is the best part of Melee.

And I love singles Melee more than any other game out there.

teams are hella underrated

i'll let otto speak for himself, but he did admit to me that setting teams entry at 10 was a huge mistake.

100% agreed that consistent partners are the way to go, i would definitely recommend this to any lower-level players who attend their local tournaments a lot, it's a FANTASTIC way to improve.

Teams isn't as hyped because a) it's hard to watch b) it's not as exiciting (not sure why) c) it's not really balanced, or at least not as strategically deep (at the moment). Giving 2nd place $100 seems reasonable to me since first probably got 200.

Love teams? Come to Sweden =).
We actually had one tournament with more people entering teams than singles.

I'm honestly not a big fan of teams. I don't like team sports in general. I usually look at team games as sort of a novel "side event" alongside the "real thing" (only in cases where there are distinct singles and doubles events, obviously).

I don't know what it is. Probably being forced to depend on another player, as well as the fact that individual failure affects not just you, but your teammate as well, causes me to not find team games particularly fun.

Don't even get me started on League of Legends. >_>

I feel teams is even MORE strategic than singles sometimes. You have to be more careful of where you step because there's two people waiting to **** you up. And normal combos become team combos. I agree that it's somewhat hard to watch because there's so much going on.

Teams is amazing, and I'm just sad that people don't take it nearly as seriously.

there's too much variance in teams for my liking. also, fox and jiggs become way too ****ing good

that being said the $10 singles/$5 teams/$10 venue trend is ****ing absurd

team names need to come back

Teams is way more fun and actually harder to truley play correct. I think one of the main reasons why teams have less really good players is becasue people don't really like watching teams or something. I think that can be changed if more players truley understand teams and it dosen't look like double singles most part of the matches.

I like both watching and participating in crews more than teams, but the strategic aspect of teams is fun when it comes together. It's particularly cool when someone around my area is noted as a good teams player, or two players in my area seem to have a special chemistry with each other.

Lol just before seeing this, I was thinking to myself of never recording any more teams sets, just singles videos. I think I'll go with that.

Teams>singles. The entry fee should match what you pay in singles, too.

I think entry should be equal for both. if singles is 15$ then so should doubles.

And about what Lovage said, its hard to get a consistent partner at low levels because so many people insonsistently attend tournaments. Mind you thats not to say that you a) shouldnt b) cant.

I thought i had a consistent partner, we attended two tournament as partners, then he both stopped caring about teams, then he just stopped attending...

Another thing about doubles is that you have to depend on your partner and not just yourself, while in singles you have to depend entirely on your own skills.

Armada, next tournament let's play a huge amount of teams friendlies. This thread is truly showing how a good chunk of the community feels about teams which makes me really sad. I mean NOT recording teams??? Come on guys!!!!

We do need team names again and everyone should look for a consistent teammate.

It's just at this rate, teams will die.

It doesn't help that we don't really have anywhere to discuss teams strategies. I'd be all over that.

sometimes teams feels like you're a chess piece instead of the chess player. You can be in a good position and your partner can be in a good position but it doesn't work out because you weren't on the same page. There's lots of ways to fix/avoid this and it can even add complexity to matches, but either way it is an obstacle not present in singles.

teams has lots of potential

I love this guy(I agree with all his posts). This is what I have been saying in the Brawl community. People don't like teams because they are not good at it. Teams is not singles and most people run around fighting 1v1 battles like it is singles.

There is plenty of room for growth for dubs in both our communities and if people take the time to understand dubs they will love it. Basic teamwork fundamentals can be carried over in any teams game. Here is a dubs tip vid I made for brawl. The fundamentals can help u melee players as well. The fundamentals are the same.
This vid talks about punishes and followups. Keep in mind u need the correct proactive teamspacing to do this. I talk about that in other vids.

We can do this guys. I don't see much teamwork in brawl or melee dubs vids. This needs to change. In Brawl I only think like 5 players of the whole community understands doubles. Teams have just been winning based on their high individual skill.
In melee I remember many years ago watching this fox and falco player play teams against Ken and Isaia. The fox and falco teamwork was so great. I loved it. Yall need to bring that type of teamwork to your new metagame yall have created. I think their names were like Taj and Foward. I'm prob wrong. Don't qoute me.
It is them haha. Here is a match. This was years ago but watch the teamwork (The only bad thing is that they lost the 2v1. U should never lose a 2v1 with good teamwork. Too many positive variables involved for your team. Just stay calm and force the guaranteed opportunities). Isai is also showing amazing teamwork skills in those matches. He is working around ken and utilizing great team spacing to have good followups and cover his partner.

Shroomed: Yeah I agree man. Would love to play a lot of teams matches. Even if it is 10 people at one TV they play singles. That is so weird and boring if you ask me :p

I love playing teams especially for friendlies. It more laid back and I feel like I dont have to try nearly as hard and can goof around a bit more(Experiment with my low tiers)

Im refering to friendlies btw. Tournament its Blue Fox go time!

I really enjoy playing team matches. Teams are different from singles and require a different mindset to play. I wish i could play Teams more but my friends rarely ever play teams and at tournaments I don't have a partner. Teams are a great part of Melee, I enjoy watching teams, and I wish they were more valued as part of tournaments. However, good teams should be players who work well together instead of just two good players playing together. I think teams would be more competitive if Teams were made specifically for team play.

As an American who's played smash in Europe, I do have to attest to the fact that there's a stereotype about Americans considering singles more important than doubles. Unfortunately, that's been borne out in my American smash experience.

I think that for SSBM to endure as a game, people need to feel like there's a living metagame. The most exciting battles in Melee are highly psychological in addition to however else they might be, but the psychological activity in a 4-person battle is exponentially more dense and seems like it would be correspondingly more taxing to process cognitively. There's so much more room for innovation in doubles at this point; I feel like the metagame for doubles is at best 7 years behind singles in terms of its sophistication.

Why can't we get over our egos and just love doubles?

I don't know about anyone else, but I love having my own space in 1v1s. I don't like sharing it
