But teams are fun, I guess. I'd only do them with someone I played with ALL the time, though. To me, singles are more important, just because it's your skill, your judgement, and yours alone, against that of another person. No one is there for me to lean on, or to carry.

Teams is way more fun and actually harder to truly play correct. I think one of the main reasons why teams have less really good players is because people don't really like watching teams or something. I think that can be changed if more players truly understand teams and it doesn't look like double singles most part of the matches.

Teams>Singles
Can you go into more detail about understanding teams and playing it correctly?

I care more about singles because I don't have to worry about dragging someone else down with my character choice.

Is there a guide to high-level teams strategy somewhere on Smashboards? I've never seen one, and if one doesn't exist, it's long overdue imo.

I hate when that happens :(
Luckily we don't have too many haters in my small community. And hearing how few actually have consistent teammates, makes me appreciate that I have one even more :D

Teams isn't as hyped because a) it's hard to watch b) it's not as exiciting (not sure why) c) it's not really balanced, or at least not as strategically deep (at the moment). Giving 2nd place $100 seems reasonable to me since first probably got 200.
Sir I present to you the most hyped thing to have ever happened in the smash community. Except maybe when el chocolate diablo finally lost a match.

Oh and then there's the wombo combo 2 because Jeff went down there.

Speaking of which, why don't we have team combo videos=??? To hype singles or this player or that player, we always got them owning someone else. Why can't we have a combo video of one team owning another team or doing combos to them like they're sandbags=??? It doesn't always have to be 2 players dominating 1 or 2 (like "WOMBO COMBO! THAT AIN'T FALCO!"), but it could be 1 player dominating 1 or 2 players. Just anything to get players hyped for teams.

Anyways, I like teams more than singles (especially playing teams) because it forces you to be more precise at more things. However, I don't have a teams teammate for tournaments. If I had that and there was a big teams movement, I would play teams 75% of the time. Teams, teams, teams.

Really though, the added layer of difficulty and uncertainty is why people (specifically us Americans) don't play it anywhere near as often as singles in tournaments. It requires more practice, getting in "the groove" with another player, and learning how to not just improve and modify yourself, but do that with or hear that from a teammate. It also is extra game planning, on top of singles game planning. But really, great teams in the past did all of what I just said.

If teams have taught us anything, it's that you can't win just on your own. You can't create a human pyramid alone. You can't give yourself a prostate exam on your own. You can't make babies on your own. You need a teammates folks! :awesome:

@ Juggleguy
I think I remember seeing a teams guide. However, the teams guide for Melee is pretty old and outdated. Like, 2008 old and outdated!

Lol

Playing teams when you're 4+ on a tv should be common ****ing sense.
In the instances where it doesn't happen for me it's more like one or more people opting to not play on that TV at all over starting a teams session and then we end up being less than 4 anyway.

All about finding a good teammate then. Of course it isn't fun teaming with someone who takes their frustration out on you. :)

Their is a deep understanding to teams. The planning, the strategy, who should approach and who should camp and get the gimps. After watching Apex 2012 M2k and Armada vs Hbox and Plup GF, it made me realize that teams shouldn't be taken lightly. In fact it should be taken more seriously then singles. I spoke with both M2k and Armada about teams because my team is a fox/peach team and M2k gave a bookload of information for the fox/peach team; even more information you get on a particular match up in singles. That opened my eyes and appreciate how important teams is in terms of strategy. I think they should increase the prize money in teams because there is a deeper understanding to it.

Teams is dumb because unless you have a set partner, it's just too random. Obviously some elements of teams skill is universal, but so much of it is dependent on how two players work together that it becomes a lot less fun when you can't work together properly. I think most people would agree with me when I say the most interesting teams sets are when the players team with each other all the time. I will watch Mango/Lucky, Armada/Aniolas, Shroomed/Alan all the time. I'd rather watch a rusty Wife/Husband team than M2K/some random top player because I just end up watching what M2K does in 1v1 situations, at which point I might as well just watch him play singles.

If you guys want to make teams more popular, the best decision would be to LOWER the entry fee, not raise it. Idk about anyone else, but I never enter teams because I never get to practice it, and thus it's not worth $10 to test my skills that I never get the chance to hone in the first place. If teams was just $5 entry and there was someone my level who wanted to enter with me in future tournaments, I'd probably give it a shot.

Can anyone argue against having a consistent teammate? I mean, I feel it was said multiple times in this thread that most people accept it, and it makes sense. If you just team up with some random person that you find at a tournament, it doesn't matter if they're really good. If you're facing a team that has an amazing team dynamic and has practiced team combos/recoveries/tricks and the like, then they'll have the upper hand. I don't really feel many people can argue against that unless there's a notable difference in skill (See me vs. Armada. I'd get destroyed. XD)

Also, lowering the price wouldn't help build teams up at all, imo. Think about how that'd affect the motivation for people that are trying to make back what they paid for entry. If the prize per person on teams was only $50, then lowering it to $5 entry would make it $25 per person. That's not really anything worth playing for to some people, so why even bother entering?

I feel the best way to get real hype going for teams matches here in 'Murica is to actually get some hyped up matches. Shroomed and Armada were just talking about playing some teams matches, yeah? If they're teams can both pull off crazy combos and the like whenever they meet up, other people might start thinking, "Well...****." And try and get their own teams going to try and start up some good team dynamics and combos. Then again, that might not work either.

Maybe a bunch of people just need to find a partner and start practicing. We know there are a bunch of really good, skilled, talented, what have you solo players out there, but can they do anything when they have another person to worry about hitting? Can they not accidentally take a stock off their teammate? Can they react fast enough to save a falling teammate that's out of jumps? I think if they really want to test their skills/reaction times in the game, they should get a consistent partner and start practicing.

Oh my God I hate being at 4 person singles rotations sometimes...

At Apex the TV I was at for a bit was me(Fox/Marth) 2 Jiggs and a Samus.

Lets just say I was waiting 20 minutes between matches.

I personally enjoy teams but enjoy singles much much more.

The reason people are so attracted to the competitive aspect of this game is the battle of skill, mind, focus, endurance and all that stuff. You just can't get enough. Like a game such as tennis, it is a one on one duel of all of these things, no one to depend on and no one to blame other than yourself. This accountability makes singles so appealing, because it focuses on the individual. A mano a mano fight, with your pride on the line every time you plug in the controller. As fans, these one on one matchups are the ones we crave as well.

This, combined with the fact that janky ridiculous things (Which are a whole lot of fun) sometimes happen in teams, has made singles much more popular.

This isn't true at all. Most regions are going to $5 per person for teams at local tourneys, and I'm convinced it's the way to go these days. Sure, at regionals and nationals it wouldn't be worth playing for to a lot of top players, but at locals you have to consider the community of randoms and what you can do to bring them back. It isn't uncommon to see local teams turnout more than double if you lower entry per person to $5... which means the top teams would earn more at the end anyway.

Your avatar never ceases to amuse me, Mahone. Never change it, please.

Also I do agree that the price drop in doubles makes people much more likely to enter.

I wish I had a consistent teammate :(

I'll agree with the general sentiment here though: many ppl don't like playing teams friendlies because practicing with some random partner can be very unproductive.

Teams itself is fun as **** though, and I think most ppl generally feel that way.

Well, I don't mean at a local level. I would agree that prices at a local level should be lowered to try and encourage interest in melee in general, especially since locals don't necessary draw any big names to them. At a bigger level, though, I don't think lowering prices is necessary.

I'm going to say that the main problem for teams is lack of a consistent partner. People don't really practice with ONE teammate so they don't really see teams as a serious thing.

Me and Alan team all the time so we really want to test ourselves against other teams. If people had consistent teammates, I think the teams mentally would change.

Everything should be $5 at a local.

Thank you Based Mimi.
I love watching the big static teams. Armada/Aniolas and Alan/Shroomed are my faavorites. Especially Alan/Shroomed. They got me liking doubles in the first place. Man, those teams played at Gen2 also. I had no idea who to cheer for. :p

Teams blows. Don't care for it to play or watch. On the contrary, I'd prefer if we got rid of teams all together. Events would run so much faster and smoother.

When the singles scene dies, teams will rise from its ashes. With how much depth and strategy it adds to the game, the metagame will evolve in such a different way it'll be incredible. It may be tougher to watch, but you bet your singles-loving-rear it's tougher to play. That's why the thinkers of the Smash world and the people who want a real challenge will eventually move to it...

At least I hope, anyway.
