At TO4, Fullmetal asked me if I was cool with getting a "death pool" cause he didn't know how to seed me. I was like, "Sure. Whatever. Not a big deal. You mind telling what it is? Got a little time before we start."

He points at the TIO screen:

Darkrain

DOP

GAWes

Frames

Jmoan

I blinked a couple of times and looked at the screen again. This time, only one name appeared on the screen because of that fun trick your eyes do when you see something that blows your mind:

Darkrain

I wanted to cry.

I didn't make it out, obviously. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxgk2NfqOoM The Sheik at 3:20 to 3:24? That was me. I had fun, though. If I had to do it again at another tourney with another high-end player, then hell yeah. I'm all for learning this game. Losing is just another way of doing that.

even though it sucks to get hard brackets

it's still not a legit john most of the time xD

cuz if you were better

u would think ur bracket is not that hard

these days everyone is so good that u will definitely have a pro or semi pro in the 2nd round

i never john about brackets or pools anymore :p

At my first gigabits after making it out of pools/preliminary bracket I had to play Afro Thundah 1st round...

I still got 7th after making a comeback in losers but then losing to chops. =D

ugh, omg shut up. clearly, these guys are just having a laugh to shake off the stress from an unpleasant experience. No one needs an elitist prick coming in here talking about making johns. Do you even do well in tourney?
he got a great point, like how are we johning?

one time my team lost 2nd round of winners to a bad team, unfortunately. we then had to play M2K and PC chris in the first round of losers bracket, because they were late and forfeited their winners match. bummer!

Innsomnia teams pools where only top 2 advance.

Darkrain/Forward
KeepSpeedn/Viperboy
bunch of other teams, definitely a team or two that would have made it out elsewhere.

Anyways, Keepspeedn and viperboy won the whole thing with dark rain and forward getting 2nd if I remember right.

MSOP pools

Darkrain
Kels
Tom R
Big R

Me

It wasn't a huge tourney, (40ish) hardest pool in the tourney.

Only time I really feel I am bracket screwed is when I have to play my crew mate within the first 2-3 rounds of winners. Luckily lately we've been meeting in losers and at least one of us usually takes home some money.

I used to always get put up against Eggz or Juce first round, that was frustrating for a while. But it has helped in a sense, and now that I usually get put up against worse players first round, I tend to do better :)

I just hate getting seeded against your own Crew members / players from your region.

When I travel 6+ hours to go to a tourney, only to face my crew member second or third round, it pisses me off. I could have done that at a local biweekly. I've been seeded against a crew member first round out of pools once, and we were already IN the same pool. I *****ed the TO out until he changed that.

I don't mind getting seeded against better players. Best way to learn.

My first regional in Socal, I had a death bracket (seriously), and faced almost every power ranker in a row and still got 2nd. I knew they were good because I had read the power rank list before, and expected facing someone great every time, so I kept doing my best (except vs someone that wasn't ranked yet but was very good for a "random").

If there is ever another pika main in a tourney, we are inevitably paired up, usually rather early in the tourney.

I've played pikapika twice in the first couple rounds in tourneys, zig once (at the only tourney we were both at, in the first round), Chad once, etc. Only exception I remember to this is not having to play Anther at Pound3.

Not really a john, just kinda amusing.
This also tends to happen with me and Spife. We usually end up playing each other within the first 3 rounds of a tournament or are put into the same starting pool.

I'm also pretty sure that at VLS there was a Link player in my first pool. I think TOs try to get low tiers to knock each other out of the tournament to prevent low tiers from placing high, cementing their position on the tier list. It's a conspiracy my friend.

KevinM!!!!!!

<3 <3 <3 going to next mass madness, and I hear Mr. SleepyK might be attending too. My appendix, however, will not be attending. <3 <3 <3

Also, from now on I shall call you KevinMmmm, like the sound somebody makes after biting into a particularly delicious cake.

Off topic: Fatal kind of reminds me of Banks, except Banks plays Melee and is one of the greatest people whom anyone could ever hope to meet.

So I had a pretty ironic situation happen yesterday:

I recently moved back to Southern Virginia (SoVa ftw!), and was looking to get back into the tourney scene, which sucks at the college I was at. I had been looking up who the common tournament-goers are, so I can know how well I will do against them. I noticed a few decent players, some better than me, that I was really looking forward to playing. One really stuck out in my mind, a DDD player (whose name I will not mention)- I really enjoy playing the Lucas-DDD MU, and really wanted to play him.

I arrived at the tournament yesterday and started screwing around, sandbagging some friendlies up and warming up. We played the doubles part of the tournament (random doubles partners, im not going to go into it but it was pretty weird), and my Lucas is looking pretty good- im not at the top of my game, but I am playing well.

In between doubles and singles starting, the DDD and I played a MM, just for ****sandgiggles. I wasnt really looking to dominate him, I just wanted to see how well he knew the MU. We had close games, he ended up winning both (he banned Norfair, which made me sad- we played a game on Norfair after our set and I rocked it)- I wasnt sad or disappointed, I was happy to have played him.

Next up, comes the singles bracket. Surprise! I have a bye first round, he (DDD main) has a bye first round, and we are playing each other 2nd round. bracket ****ed. He beat me the first game, I took his DDD to RC (after he banned Norfair) and went MK. I was doing great with MK, I wasnt slaughtering him but I was winning the entire match, both in stock and percentage. I am on my last stock, and I ended up mistiming a Mach Tornado and Freefalling away my last stock :(

Singles rolled on, I ended up losing somewhere in the losers bracket, I PSI Magneted a Lucario and mi**** my PKT2- not the end of the world, I could have done better but w/e.

As I am getting ready to leave, I decide to ask the dude who won their last tournament for a match- "to see what I was missing." He is an IC main, and a pretty good one too. We had a very even first game, he ended up finishing a CG (me @ 107% him at 104%, both on our last stock) with a U-smash to end our first game. I CPed Jungle Japes, a stage I am very comfortable on with Lucas. I 3 stocked his Marth, my best moment of the day :) then he took me to RC and 3 stocked me with his MK, lol.

Irony ftw. A bad tournament, but Im not going to john about too much (DDD banning Norfair johns!!!!!)- but it was not a good day for me. Irony had it out for me.

This isn't really bracket.
But I've been put in KevinM and Mango's pool the last to MM's.

****.

Incidentally, i've NEVER made it out of pools haha.

And to echo what Skler said: First MM that we were both at, I was going to have him watch me and give me advice and ****. We ended up playing like first round -.-

My first tournament was Final Round XII.
My first match in said tournament was against Georgia's own Fullmetal.
I actually did a lot better than I thought I would. I just haven't played very much since then until very, very recently, when I was just like "GAH DANG I WANNA PLAY MELEE!"
I hope I do better at Southeast Battles than I did at Final Round.

At WCSL I got Mango second round because I wasn't "ranked" (in a power rankings...) and the tournament organizers "don't make assumptions".

Knowing that you have to face Mango first is so stressful. I'm so sorry for anyone who has him (or anyone like him) in your pool / early on in the bracket >_>

Pound 3. Went 12-0 for my first pool (can't recall who was in it apart from Hayato), 12-0 in my second (including Skler and Drephen), and then got into my third pool. It was announced as:

M2K
Azen
Forward
Chu
Sliq
Azn_Lep
SwiftBass
Me

:( Turns out that M2K being in there was an error and they replaced him with Alukard; I still didn't make it out. Sucks because if I hadn't been a first seed from both my previous pools, I would have been sent to a different one in the third round and possibly made it out. Hardest pool of my life, but I wouldn't trade it for anything ^_^

I remember that the only reason you didn't get out of pools was because I beat Forward, despite you beating me with your mighty glove.

i know how both of you feel.

At this point me and pikapika are about 90% of the people from rochester that still travel for smash.

Back when rochester had regular tourneys i had to play pikapika in the first two rounds about 70% of the time. which wasnt too big of a deal because its biweeklys so its all the same people anyway.

the last 2 tourneys that we went to, one in boston last month and one in buffalo this past weekend, I had to play pikapika second round both times. in boston, i caught it before the brackets started and got them switched, but in buffalo, i didnt see it. not to mention that he had a first round bye, so i was his first match. he 2-0d me, and I proceeded to beat like 8 guys through all of losers bracket only to have to play neil in grand finals. also want to just throw out the fact that in the 2 sets that i had to play against him, my scrubby azz MK was the only character i could get a legit game off him with.

i can jsut stay in rochester and paly him, i dont need to travel from rochester ny to boston to spend my money to play these people.

The entire point of traveling is to play new and different people. lol

also, dont mind hubble, hes:
1. a troll
2. bad at melee
3. amazing at getting punched by my ganon. (YOU LOVE DAT PURPLE STUFF)

Aw man, OC3 Singles Pools, I wound up with KEN, yeah that's right, The King of Smash himself, along with a lot of other top-ranked SoCal peeps. Then comes doubles pools... Guess what? My partner and I got freaking Ken and Bombsoldier in our pool along with several other amazing teams from both Coasts.

Last year, at Event 52(in Kansas City), in doubles my partner and I got M2K and Cactuar, as well as pretty much all of Florida's top talent in first round pools.

Last year at OHSNAP, I got Sethlon, Foursaken, ChaosTheory, ChuckNasty, and a few more amazing peeps.

Needless to say, I never got out of first round pools for like, 2 years, leading me to believe I was cursed... I got over it, stepped my game up, and have been playing pretty well this year. I love the challenge, and wouldn't trade those experiences for anything.

It also helps when Ken congratulated my playing, and complimented me on my Shoryuken-ing him (which didn't kill him, because he has godly DI skills)

Well I wouldn't call this "screwed"..it was actually pretty tight.

OC2 Pools
Me
Clod Zero
Zelgadis
And some other people...
We all got out... Clod Zero 4 stocked me twice to get the third and final 3rd seed >.>
Don't hate the playa, hate the person who made the pools.

Anyone remember the Death pool at FC3 with like Eddie, Mike G, Azen, Ken and someone else?

How hard your backet is usually depends on your seeding from pools.

If you get 4th seed in pools, you have to play a 1st seed in the first round of brackets, meaning you'll probably lose. But likewise, another 4th seed has to play a 1st seed and if they lose, you'll play them in losers bracket.

2nd seed and 3rd seed have this same beginning pattern as well. Theoretically though, you could as a 4th seed play a 1st seed in winners bracket and in losers bracket if the other 4th seed somehow beats the 1st seed.

My first Brawl tournament me/Greg lost to the 1st/2nd place teams and finished 9th.

In singles I lost to two people who purchased the Japanese version of the game/wii's and had 2 months of playing to my 2 weeks. I got taken to levels I hadn't even unlocked yet. Sniff. Final placement was like 33rd/71.
