For those of you who don't know, I'm 14 years old and live right outside of Denver, Colorado. I'm a huge fan of Smash and go to tournies in my area whenever I can. Colorado has a relatively small smash scene, with most tournaments maxing out at about 20-25 people for singles. Because of this small scene, I've been yearning to go out of state for a large event (something that the other smashers here do a lot) for a long time, so I can experience smash on a larger scale, play against people who I've never played before, and watch my favorite pros play in person.

BUT GOD **** MY PARENTS ARE WAY TOO OVERPROTECTIVE. I'm their sweet little boy to them still, and because of things like that I haven't even dared to ask them to let me go with the other smashers to a big tourney.

Some of the reasons I haven't even tried yet are:

1. Age
I'm 14. Youngest Smasher in Colorado, I think. The next youngest guys are 16 that I know of, and the oldest that I know about is 23ish, with a bunch of people inbetween those two ages. If my parents knew I was going to be driving out of state with 18 year olds and stuff, they'd think I'd be smoking pot the whole way there or something irrational like that. They don't trust people older than me, even if they're like 2 years older than me.

2. What we do
We play video games. My parents are foreign (not asian, though) so they'd rather see me read a book instead of "wasting my life" playing video games. Nuff said.

3. Where I'm going
My parents find something bad about EVERYTHING. If I were go to California, I'm gonna get mugged. If I were to go to Texas, I'd die from heat stroke. If I were to go to Nevada, I'd get sunburn. Srsly.

That's just a few examples of what kind of people my parents are. Cautious and overprotective of their kid.

I need to convince my parents that I'm responsible enough to go out of state without them going with me, and also how to get rid of those predispositions they have. Anti, FOW, Weruop, Razer, or any of the guys who are under 16 and have gone to huge events probably won't ever find this blog, but if ANYONE could just offer up some help or advice, I'd really appreciate it.

tl;dr: How can I convince my parents to let me go out of state with other Smashers?

Just do everything they say and wait until you move out.
Why are children so bloody stubborn and blind to the obvious easy way out of conflict with parents?

Suck it up and wait until you've turned 18. That's the best I can think of, by then we'll probably being have Super Smash Bros. Brawl VS. Super Smash Bros. Donnybrook arguments anyway.

Wait.. So you wouldn't be doing that?
On a serious note, some times bad things happen to good people. You really don't know what can happen. When your older you'll understand why your parents say things like that.. one way or another.

That's because as far as the law's concerned, you're still a kid.
Also, you are still a kid.

Boys don't grow up till about 25, and even then they don't really grow up.

:O You have that problem too?
Wait, wha-? Out of state? Nevermind, I can't relate. I can see why they won't let you go,though :p

Options:

1. Suck it up until you're 18 or so.
2. Talk to them about it. Easier said than done, but still. Maybe bring along an older family member who also plays Smash?
3. Run away to Mexico.

Oh hey, my parents are like this too.

Well, actually it's just my mom. I'm 17 and stuff, but everyone in my family besides her believes. And she has like, full control and stuff.

It's like, woah. She's a dictator.

Well first off try asking them Lol. You spent this whole blog whining about your parents when you haven't even proposed the question to them yet. Trust me parents are understanding and will suprise you a lot. I'm only just 16, and notorious for doing "too much" sport in my life. I was really worried about asking my parents to go to my first tourny I thought they'd laugh at me (Lol go outside and play a real competitive game), and flat tell me no. Instead they said I was allowed and even give me lifts to my local tournys now.
One of my best Smasher friends is only 14, his parents know a lot of the smashers we meet at tournys so are fairly cool about letting him go, bring some of the younger friends over for practice, get better and give your parents some confidence.
Edit: Lol thats my friend down below fyi.

Yeah that works ^_^

Meet some local smashers that can also travel with you at your local tourney or on Smashboards, get them to come over and your parents are comfortable with them, and then they think your going out in a group rather than alone, and so they feel like you are safer. Thats what i did. Although, i doubt i'd be allowed to travel OoS still. Just local tournaments is enough for me. You shouldn't be travelling OoS without your parents til like 16-18 IMO

You just gotta ask. If they say no, then you can get to the "convincing" part.

But if they've been letting you go to local tournaments and stuff, it means they're at least comfortable with the people there, and comfortable with you going to tournaments. Some parents don't even get that far.

Just ask them next time there's an OoS tourney you want to go to, you might be surprised. :lick:

Also, try to find the right time to ask. When they're in a good mood, that'll be your best chance. It also wouldn't hurt if you did something like get straight A's, then ask right after.

Let me just view this from the parents eyes.
My son is 14 is going to tournaments for a silly game with fluffy characters, together with other sweaty people. I want him to focus on his school work and study hard to get into college, be educated and be succesful. Now he asks me if he can go out of state for a weekend with 18 year olds. These could easily be kidnappers.

You really think your parents let you go out of state with people who are strangers to them. I don't think so.

If my son had an avatar like your's, I'd let him go out of state to hang out with some kidnappers.

If I had a son, of course.

Gays shouldn't be allowed to have children, not even adopted O.J.'s.
They are bad parents and molest children.
... just what are you implying?

Wow, we're getting pretty off-topic. Is this what Serris was talking about?

-is the money you'd be going to OOS tournaments even yours? Or your parents? I'm pretty sure that'd play a pretty big part, lol.
-is there anyone in your smash scene that you're close to? Someone you wouldn't mind hanging out with sometime outside of the venue, maybe make an effort to have your parents meet said smasher (preferably one that isn't socially inept and actually bathes)
-you're hanging out with gamers lol. like, seriously. Drive that home, it's probably the most innocent teenage demographic lol.

Ask them to travel with you out of state. See if you could take a family vacation somewhere where theres a smash tournament; and explain that it's only one day ( maybe two). Let them come to the tournament to drop you off or whatever.

I would also reccomend introducing them to the smashers in colorado, show them that there isn't anything to be afraid of.

My parents are literally just like that. xD

Try actually having your parents meet the smashers who are taking you out of state. They're not going to let you go if they have no idea who they are (we all know they're cool people but parents are a different story X_x).

Also try and bring up good reasons and facts as to why you will be totally fine. They can try to ignore facts but if you're persistent with them, they'll crack and that's your chance.

my parents were always like that too :(

I didn't get to go to my first OOS tournament until I turned 18 lol

My advice would be to have some smashers over your house every once in a while, so your parents can get to know them. It might be easier to convince them if they know the people you're going with.

You could always say that you're going to a friend's house for the entire day . . . and then just scurry off to the tournement of your choosing :p

My parents are pretty protective, but I managed to get a friend of mine who drives to get into smash. My parents also know him. That's allowed me to go to a few tournements. Too bad he's moving in a month, but at least I'll be able to drive by then.

Just get them to meet the friends who are going to take you and that's really it.

It's actually not unreasonable for your parents to not elt you travel out of state with people they don't know at all.

I completely agree. I think that the worst thng that happens when you do something bad is when your parents are dissapointed of you. When they are truly dissappointed, and look at you in that pitying, and sad way, I would much rather that they yelled. Loudly. When I was that age, I was unfortunately mature for my age. Was this good? No. I refused to have a girlfriend until High School because innocence is a thing to cherish above all things. No, you are wrong, I was (and am not :p ) ugly, I was actually very good looking, but I would have the rest of my life for dating. If you do not understand this, you will. Unfortunately.

Get a smasher you know/are cool with, and if he's big in the tourney scene, ask him to talk to your parents for you. If they meet him, they would find out he isn't any 50-year old rapist who stalks kids through video games.

I'm 15, and yeah, I went through the same thing.

Xyro77 lives 2 minutes away from me, and Ozzfest was coming up. I asked him if he could take me, but I didn't talk to my parents about it first. They think everyone on the internet must be a predator, lul. Well, Xyro came by my house and talked to them what it was about. My parents and older brother still didn't allow me to go with him. My older brother took me, but I had to take someone with me as my dad said, so I took my 16-year old cousin.

After we got there, we met up with Allan, who helped us to get there, and also allowing my brother to talk to Ozz's mom cause he had some questions. He stayed [Older bro] with me and my cousin for awhile while we were there. After he knew it was safe, he left us there.

Well, recently I went to Geasis, not Genesis btw, it was a smashfest in Houston lolol. My parents said 'no' straight up when I asked. Well, again, I asked Xyro to take me, but I hadn't talked to my parents either. After awhile, I told my dad, I don't ask for much, sersiously I don't, I just ask to go out to places, and have privacy. He said he'd think about it, but I had to bring a close friend or cousin that they knew with me. My cousin, who yeah, is a big game nerd didn't want to go [the one who went to Ozz's with me] and my close friend was in Florida at the time.

I didn't know anyone else who played Smash though, so it kinda went down the drain. But after I told my dad about everything that happened, like the first time he met Xyro, and how he helped us get to Ozz's, my brother talked to him, I also showed him the Houston thread that he created. I showed him the list of all the tournies he's hosted, as well as talked to my dad about how he has done this before.

He actually has as well, went to smashers house to talk to their parents and all that. Well, my dad actually trusted him, a lil. So I did end up going, it was about an hour drive, and we got home at the right time and everything.

I think my dad trusts him now. And its been all good since then, considering Geasis was just Friday. :pimp:

idk if this will help, but thats what I did.

I'm 15. Told my parents I was gonna have a guy I met at a tourney take me to a tourney. They were like "Whatever."

Not very good parents, let's just say that. But eh, at least it doesn't hold me back. Your lucky you have protective parents who actually care what happens to you. (Although I know i'd find it annoying.)

My parents still don't like me driving with Flux...
Well...Maybe we could work together on this? We're both pretty young, and I'm too young to be a pedophile, so maybe your parents would be alright if they knew we were traveling together? My parents might be alright with that.

edit: also, you can tell them I'm a black belt. That might add sense of security?
