I was just wondering how old most people are that go to tourneys. Cuz I'm 15 and I'm a little worried that if I go to one I'll be "looked down on" by older players. So, are there any younger players who go?

-Also, about how many people generally show up at Melee tournaments?

Every region is different. Calgary, Alberta was mostly 15-19, but in Vancouver, BC, a lot are in their 20s. Most people won't care about age because they're too busy having fun, so don't worry about it.

If you want to know though, check out your region in the Regional Zones board and ask!

It doesn't matter your age, just go anyway. I started when I was 13 and I'm 14 now. Lot of older players like younger players too so you should definitely go.

A lot of smasher's (majority of Melee players) are in there 20s. But you don't have to feel abashed or ashamed at all, there also a lot of smashers around your age (15-19) so it feels normal having young kids around. Some are even younger. So if you go to a tournament and see mostly guys who look a bit older than you; don't worry about it. You definitely won't looked down upon and you'll fit right in.

I agree with this statement, we need to introduce this to kids somehow, needs more promotion
It dont think it will work, kids only care about CoD and staying at home playing fps's these days. There some kids out there who might want to play games like Smash competitively (like me) but there aren't many.

the game is old! most people actively going to melee tournies have already been going for years, most people in my region for example are 18+ because most of us have been playing since we were 15. i like this a lot btw lol.

I went to a tourney a few months back and was going back forth with a kid named crush and I think he's like 14 or something and I was 20 at the time and the fact that this kid was kicking my *** made me pretty happy cause when all the older players quit his generation will carry on the tradition but he may be ****** players alot sooner then ppl think

The age of the smashers in my area (Pittsburgh) ranges from about 17 - 24 with a few outliers. If I had to guess, I would say the average age of players that travel to regional/national tournaments is about 21. We're all kids at heart, so the age difference is really a non-issue (unless you are younger than 13 or so).

Dont sweat it

not alot of older people (25+) will go to these tournaments. thats how its been for me at least. just try and do your best, plus, the people love a young player, especially when they go far!

I just started playing competitively a little while ago, but I wish that I had started when I was 15...

starting smash tournaments as a teenager is def. the most amazing way to get good at this game. simply because you're a little kid who has very little responsibility, hopefully lenient parents that let him go out, and likely a disposable income. that's the perfect time to dedicate yourself to a sick game like melee.

people that start out later are still good, mind you, it's just an easier time in your life for smash when you're a bit younger.

I don't see many kids for either, but It is more likely to see kids for Brawl cause its newer and melee is 10 years old.
Pretty much. Melee community is expected to be older overall.

From what I saw at Apex, most Melee players I hung out with over the weekend looked early to mid 20s. The Brawl audience at the venue looked mid teens to early twenties in my estimation.

I was too afraid of losing to enter tournaments when I was that age anyways. I had such a bad attitude back then...

This^ I played non competetive with my friend all the time and could never actually beat him in a stock match, I was introduced like half a year to a year ago to competetive smash, I don't talk with the kid anymore but now, I'd 4-stock him

This makes me glad to see cause I'm 14 now. So I should have plenty of time to practice.

We have 16-24 range, its really varied here in MW... Not much older tho ever. Most of it IS concentrated in the pre-adult age (17-21) range

Melee in my area... it depends the tournament and area within my area. Seeing as how I live in NorCal. I specifically live right smack dab in the middle of Oakland/SF, San Jose, and Stockton (North of that is Sacramento and Central Cal below). All of those areas have a smash scene.

But for Melee I gotta say 15-27 is the general range (I'm 20 and closing in on 21, right smack dab in the middle). Being a bit older or younger isn't a huge deal. Hell, once in a game of Melee a kid who looked no older than 12 kicked my butt. Granted, it was my first real tournament and several years ago!

This makes me glad cause I'm still 17 but I only wish the smash seen was closer too me (the closest smasher to me lives 45 minutes away :glare:).

You'll usually be the youngest smasher in the room, but thats OK. Everyone is super chill so you shouldn't get any flak. In fact, you'll get the opposite: everyone loves cheering for youngins.

For Melee I'd say the average age is about 22. Some regions are generally older than others (see: MD/VA old men status), but they're largely the same. Brawl average age has to be...17? Brawl players would know better tho so I'd ask them.

No one is going to "look down" upon you OP, because we're not jerks. =p Also while most of us are around 19-22 years-old, we're really just a bunch of 16 year old kids at heart.

People actually seem to look down more on older players than younger ones. Just from the terminology I've seen thrown around, like referring to people older than 25 as geezers, which is ridiculous.

The average age is probably higher for Melee but there's no reason to look down on that. You just have a lot more time to get better than somebody who is already in college, so I would say it works out to your favor if anything.

In AL, 18-21 is about the norm for both games I would say.

Wow, I find it really weird that the inventor of Shai Dropping comes from a dead state like Oregon hahahaha

Also, I'd say the average age of socal is 18-21

I was in Mississippi at the time, but it's an even more dead state. And soon I'll be moving to another dead state (Colorado). It seems I'm cursed to live in such places. So I spend much more time practicing by myself than most people, which makes it easy to figure out new techniques. I think if I had started playing when the game was young I would have discovered wavedashing, L-cancelling, etc., in about a month ;)
