I'm pretty young and i've been going to tournies for a little while now. People are right, you'll fit in, while i've often found myself the youngest in competitive play, I've seen many kids muuuuch younger than myself just coming in and playing with the competitors for fun. It's really not a big problem, the main thing is just to have fun, and I have some pleasant hazy memories of my first fun-filled day when I went to a tournament.

My brother also plays, but he's older than me. :)

Thats probably the youngest I've heard of.

AND @Dusk-The-Stray: how did you get your text to look like that? I would like to know because it looks awesome lol.

Thanks, you probably meant the glow, right? It's like this: [.glow][/glow] and anything in between that will glow. You have to take the period out of the word though.

I really do think that this is the wrong mindset to have when getting in to competive smash. Going to tournaments is one of if not the best way to get better; and if your only playing to win money, then your playing for the wrong reason.

:phone:
This statement all the way. I went to my first actual tournament that isn't a library local back in June and it was a blast even though I got dead last. I have improved quite a bit since I first started playing at that time and I plan on hitting up a lot more tournaments. My friend thought the same way when I took him to his first tournament. His mindset was, yeah I plan to make at least some cash at this. He ended getting dead last at the last two tournaments but he goes because it is a lot of fun meeting new people and he is improving quite a bit with the help of others.

You should at least do one tournament, you may be frustrated at first but after you had your first experience you will play more and improve.

I entered my first Melee tournament in college when I was 18 and thought I was godlike with Sheik... Turns out I was actually the best among the current students there, and had won what I would now refer to as a scrub tournament LOL.

There was another tournament held the next day, this time open to off-campus guests. Several seasoned vets came by and pooped on everyone. I came in 3rd or 4th, for I lacked their obvious experience and technical skill. This is where I learned that I was merely a scrub, and needed serious improvement.

That opened my eyes to me not actually being anywhere near competitive level. The next year I played nothing but Melee with a few college buddies, learned all the basic fundamental techs, and then... Brawl came out. Upon it's release I have been entering tournaments ever since, and I've gotten way better at both games simply by traveling and meeting people, picking up on new things, and overall garnering valuable experience.

I'm 24 now as of last week, and I couldn't be happier to have smash a part of my life. Bc of the thrills I get while competing in what was intended as a children's party game, I've traveled all over the country, including E3 2011, the MLG events, and I plan on going to Japan this summer for a national.

Smash has truly opened many doors for me, and significantly changed my life in a way that the hardcore gamer kid in me will never forget.

I'm pretty sure he's not. And I see him post on the boards and by the looks of it I would say hes way older than 11 lol.
Hey now, I'm only 19. Not WAY older. (But really I am bester than you)

But I send out all of my love to those who are older and have been in the scene long. Respect. <3 I played all the games when they came out but only with Brawl did I even try to be "good". Hope to increase my tournament appearances when SSB4 comes out. These games have such an amazing community, you guys are great.

It will be interesting to see what the Smash 4 competitive scene will be like. It will be the start of a new era of smashers.

Hell yes, I wanna be number one when it comes out.
I will finally have the chance to join the community when it first starts. Instead, of joining years later when players have already gotten good lol.

Going to have to get passed me. ;D

If the game has a ranking system, I'll seriously aim to be a pro. ^^ Jumping into Melee or Brawl with that mentality right now just doesn't seem appetizing, though I love them both tons.

Oh, and there is not much more annoying than a skilled Marth to me, if you do main Marth Wizz. Yikes.

I'm aiming to go for smash researching for the upcoming game.
I'm also hoping that kirby gets to a high tier.

I've never thought about that before.. I wonder if I'd be cut out for that. Right now I couldn't say two cents about technical aspects of any of the games. ^_^; I think that would be interesting to do though.

Hope im not stepping on toes, but i feel like many people experience a "mental barrier" between certain age groups, a barrier that may interfere and/or delay progress. There are exceptions, but it happens a lot. I kind of think that the younger you start playing competitively, the easier it is to break that barrier, assuming that individual has enough discipline and is determind/dedicated enough, and has the right kind of guidance from mentors.

Why do they make you feel uncomfortable? Do you think they are going to molest you or something? O_o

Yeah, I don't care how old you are. If you want to play some smash and if you're chill, you are good in my book. You can be five times my age and I'd just think that is awesome.

It's not like when I get that age I'm just going to be like, "Welp, no more serious gaming for me! lawl!" If I still love Nintendo games at that age nothing is going to change my joys. If anything is going to change them, it sure as hell won't be other peoples' social standards.

I forgot to mention this in my previous post.

I am 21 and the people in my area are 19+ that come to the smashfests, (the oldest being 25 almost 26). I plan on playing this game for a long time :p

B4 I vote... Do I put down the age I started playing in tourneys or the age I am now? Yes I realize it says age I am now but I'm curious.

Well in the end, it is about fun. You may pay money, but at the very core of it, games are made for fun. Playing competitively is pretty much just the people who beat all their friends and still want to play the game more with it being challenging.

There are definitely exceptions, but i'd say there are more than a few who come to tournies for getting a challenge and having some fun.

I have no idea why, (Absolutely NO offense to anyone) but it just makes me think about what they do as a job, do they have kids, are they married, etc. and it makes me think about how long they might have been playing the game, to come to the point at a tourney where they still aren't getting very far, not to say that entire age group does so, just the ones that may happen to, i wonder about how they might feel, compared to me, Who's only been smashing competitively for 2 years, starting to catch up to some of them, and for most even that is a lot of time (I'm 16). I know things take time, but i sympathize with those who may be frustrated with things taking longer to speed up for them.

@mink, so long as i don't know the age, and they don't look creepy, no one really creeps me out :p
