I entered my first Melee tournament in college when I was 18 and thought I was godlike with Sheik... Turns out I was actually the best among the current students there, and had won what I would now refer to as a scrub tournament LOL.
There was another tournament held the next day, this time open to off-campus guests. Several seasoned vets came by and pooped on everyone. I came in 3rd or 4th, for I lacked their obvious experience and technical skill. This is where I learned that I was merely a scrub, and needed serious improvement.
That opened my eyes to me not actually being anywhere near competitive level. The next year I played nothing but Melee with a few college buddies, learned all the basic fundamental techs, and then... Brawl came out. Upon it's release I have been entering tournaments ever since, and I've gotten way better at both games simply by traveling and meeting people, picking up on new things, and overall garnering valuable experience.
I'm 24 now as of last week, and I couldn't be happier to have smash a part of my life. Bc of the thrills I get while competing in what was intended as a children's party game, I've traveled all over the country, including E3 2011, the MLG events, and I plan on going to Japan this summer for a national.
Smash has truly opened many doors for me, and significantly changed my life in a way that the hardcore gamer kid in me will never forget.
