Quack Pack
Donald Duck (mostly based on Quack Pack, but with aspects from his other appearances)

Might solve a mystery do an image version one day, might not. Who knows.
Still to this day it amazes me that Disney did a show based on the gummy bear candies.

An NES-themed fighting game (probably platform), imagined in the context of a fan game and not an official release
  1. Mario (Super Mario Bros.)
  2. Link (The Legend of Zelda)
  3. Bubbles (Clu Clu Land)
  4. Lloyd (Mother)
  5. Dracula (Castlevania)
  6. Slime (Dragon Quest)
  7. Mega Man (Mega Man)
  8. Bill Rizer (Contra)
  9. Alex (AKA Kunio) (River City Ransom)
  10. Mr. Gimmick (AKA Yumetaro) (Mr. Gimmick)
  11. Willy (Rockin Kats)
  12. Donatello (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
  13. Scrooge McDuck (DuckTales)
  14. Grand Dad (7 Grand Dad)
  15. Alex Kidd (Alex Kidd in Miracle World)

Honourable mentions to Samus, Duck Hunt, Little Mac, and Pit, who I cut so Nintendo wouldn't completely dominate the roster; Erdrick, Pac-Man, and Simon who I cut along with those 4 so it didn't seem like a complete Smash clone; and an Atari 2600 rep (probably Yorgle or Pitfall Harry) who I cut because I felt they'd take away the appeal of Kidd's prescence.

Dishonourable mention to Urban Champion, who is really boring and I will never understand the consistent prescence of in rosters like this.

Wherever good books are sold.
Made a MK9 roster for a Discord server; Thought I'd share it here too.

The Miis would also be included, but I ran out of room. Honorable mention to MC Ballyhoo.

Guest racers were an intentional exclusion, but if I had to pick some, they'd be mostly Nintendo guests with one or two third-parties (probably Sonic and/or Pac-Man). There'd be six at absolute most.

A little bored and I have some time to spare before a move right now, so...

Rounding out my trio of year-old fan rosters is my Playstation All-Star Reboot roster.
This is actually about 2 years old, dating back to around the PS5 launch. None of the core PS5 exclusives had been out yet save for Miles Morales, so this was mostly based on the previous 4 generations, though this would still hold up very well in the PS5 era. Also, elephant in the room, but this was way before Microsoft bought Activision, which is why Crash and Spyro are still there.

The only general exception to all of this is Thor, which was a character I added about a couple months back when Ragnarok was closer to release. Originally, Zeus was on the roster, but Thor has since replaced him (for the better, in my opinion).

As said before, this is meant to be a reboot, not a direct sequel, so every character is treated as a newcomer; Though I still took notes from the original game and even pulled in some of their more out there picks for my roster as I felt they fit.
My idea here is that this is both a fan roster and a "prediction" roster, mixing ideas that I think the roster should take whilst also being as realistic as I possibly could with who could be added. In the end I am very happy with what the roster looks like.

Anyway, I'm leaving this open to general criticism or questions or whatever lol. Have at it, if you want
Got bored and decided to make a DLC line-up for this.
image0-35 (1).jpg

Classic Kratos is a free bonus character, the rest are all part of the DLC seasons. Didn't really aim to imitate Ultimate's DLC format but it ended up that way, with me having too many characters and having to split it between two seasons.

I was bored, so I decided to make a roster based on 1980's villains that are known in pop culture..

1980's Bad guy BATTLE ROYALE
This game has only one rule: the character must debut in following years: 1980 - 1989 (characters from franchises that existed before the 80's like G.I. Joe are allowed).

This game is a traditional fighter that includes super/kill moves.

Roster:
1. Jack Torrance (The shining)
2. Megatron (Transformers)
3. Cobra Commander (GI Joe)
4. Skeletor (Masters of the universe)
5. Bowser (Super Mario Bros)
6. Ghost Gang (Pac-Man)
7. Johnny Lawrence (The Karate Kid)
8. Shredder (TMNT)
9. Palpatine (Star Wars)
10. Frieza (Dragon Ball)
11. Stay Puft Marshmallow man (Ghostbusters) (He would be scaled down)
12. Yautja/Predator (Jungle hunter)
13. Ursula (The little mermaid)
14. The Dragonlord (Dragon Quest)
15. Raoh (Fist of North Star)
16. Venom (Marvel)
17. Nemesis/Mykros (DC)
18. Mumm-Ra (Thundercats)
19. Pennywise the Clown (IT)
20. Jason Voorhess

DLC Pass vol. 1:
1. Ganon (Legend of Zelda)
2. Venger (DnD)
3. Freddy Krueger
4. Killer Croc (DC)

DLC Pass vol. 2:
1. Dr. Wily (Mega Man)
2. Dr. Claw (Inspector Gadget)
3. Beetlejuice/Betelguese
4. KARR (Knight Rider)

NOTE: I swapped out John Conner with Palpatine, because I found out that John was a child and this roster didn't had a Star Wars rep.

John Conner is not a villian. He's literally just a child. unless you count Gennyis but then that's not 80s

  2. Krilia
  3. Majora's Mask
  4. Sans (Moveset based on gags from pacifist route)
  5. Skylanders Spyro
  6. Gaz and Geno

For this roster, I wanted scenarios that are against expectation/desire, but also aren't comically bad or ridiculous. Honourable mentions to Haunter/Gastly and Elderly Impa, as I didn't want to double on any series, and a Freddy Fazbear with a specifically "cute mascot" themed moveset, as from my experience Freddy is more a dreaded character than a wanted one.

You mean Ralts?
I chose Krilia on virtue of being easier to imagine a moveset for (at least to me) than Ralts or Gallade, my goal here wasn't really "let's disappoint people" and more "let's momentarily disappoint people before they realise what they got is really cool anyway" (though I would prefer Ralts over Garde)

Kirlia is actually my favorite in its family so I stay winning.

Theme Park Throwdown: The Thrill ride of a Century

Sure, you can go to Disney World to meet Mickey Mouse, but theme parks and amusement parks around the world have created their own characters which are beloved by their parks visitors worldwide. I’ve tried to do one character per theme park, although I could (and have) honestly just made it all Disney Park themed for the sheer number of icons that the parks have created. Some on this list come from individual attractions, while some represent their parks as a whole. I may add stages later (also a LOT of ghosts and bears on this list somehow).

Roster (warning: BIG)-

  1. Figment – Journey into Imagination (Epcot Center)
  2. Redd – Pirates of the Caribbean (Disneyland Park)
  3. RX-24/R3X – Star Tours (Disney’s Hollywood Studios)
  4. Yeti – Expedition Everest (Disney’s Animal Kingdom)
  5. The Hitchhiking Ghosts – The Haunted Mansion (Magic Kingdom Park)
  6. Bellhop – Tower of Terror (Disney’s California Adventure)
  7. Doc Brown – Back to the Future: The Ride (Universal Studios Florida)
  8. Merlin – The Lost Continent (Universal’s Islands of Adventure)
  9. King Kong – Backlot Tour (Universal Studios Hollywood)
  10. Finn the Shark – SeaWorld
  11. Ollie – Legoland
  12. Mr. Six – Six Flags
  13. Boysen Bear and Girlsen Bear – Knott’s Beary Tales (Knott’s Berry Farm)
  14. Benjamin Bear – Dollywood
  15. Emmaline Henry – Time Traveler (Silver dollar City)
  16. Akbar – Akbar’s Adventure Tours (Busch Gardens Tampa)
  17. Boocifer – Ghost/Boo Blasters (Multiple parks)
  18. Paul Bunyan- Log Chute (Nickelodeon Universe/Mall of America)
  19. Dave – Disaster Transport (Cedar Fair)
  20. Snoopy and Woodstock – Valley Fair/Cedar Fair Parks
  21. Maestro – Phantom Theatre (King’s Dominion)
  22. The Beast- Kings Island
  23. Dulcinea – Shima Spain Village

Anddddd here's the stage list. Most of the Dlc would probably be Disney-Park characters, and I already basically exhasted all of that. Each stage slot correlates with the character in the same place on the roster. Hope that your own local park or a park that has meaning to you is represented here! (Sorry Phantasialand fans).

Stages:

  1. Epcot Center (Flying battlefield stage over the park)
  2. Sleeping Beauty Castle (Disneyland Park)
  3. Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (Disney’s Hollywood Studios)
  4. The Tree of Life (Disney’s Animal Kingdom)
  5. Cinderella Castle Fireworks (Magic Kingdom Park)
  6. California Screamin’ and the Sun Wheel (Disney’s California Adventure)
  7. New York Street (Universal Studios Florida)
  8. Port of Entry (Universal’s Islands of Adventure)
  9. Universal Studios Backlot (Universal Studios Hollywood)
  10. Dolphin Theatre (Seaworld)
  11. Miniland (Legoland)
  12. SkyScreamer (Six Flags)
  13. Ghost Town (Knott’s Berry Farm)
  14. Dollywood Express (Dollywood)
  15. Time Traveler (Silver Dollar City)
  16. Gwazi (Busch Gardens Tampa)
  17. Boo Blasters
  18. Nickelodeon Universe (Mall of America)
  19. Top Thrill Dragster (Cedar Point)
  20. Camp Snoopy (Valley Fair/Cedar Fair Parks)

Updated Sonic Smash.
Probably about time I do a Sonic Smash roster. The game has a much faster pace than Smash (like NASB with more moves and actual grabs). There is a built in and competitively tested Final Smash-esque mechanic (Chaos Meter). Characters are mainly unlocked through achievments like the earlier Smash games, but there are a ton of ways to unlock different characters, so as long as you experiment you can get everyone pretty fast.
  • Changes from previous version
    • (Almost) all clones have been cut - mainly for the sake of formatting.
    • Mecha Sonic replaced with Scrap Mecha Sonic. I just think he can do a lot more than his original sprite and it's a really cool concept overall.
    • Belle has been added - actually I mainly just put her there so Tangle and Whisper could have someone to be on a three-part team with.
      • Speaking of teams of three, that is kind of what the roster ended up being. I think it worked out alright, though the last three rows obviously have no theming of that sort.

    • Storm The Albatross added. This was done at first both to perserve the team theming and so he wouldn't be left out by Jet and Wave. Looking back now, though, I'd be fine with dropping both him and Wave if the team theme was also dropped. Probably in the next version I'll do that.
    • Robotnik added, based on Jim Carrey's portrayal of him in the Sonic films. There's a ton you can do with him and he's like this perfect blend of a realistic military scientist mixed with the insanity of the actual Eggman.
    • Sage has been added. No-brainer here.
    • Classic Sonic has been decloned, and is now right by Mighty and Ray. I do love the Archie interpretations of these two, but for the sake of the roster and the Sonic brand I think this makes much more sense to have them as they've always appeared outside of comics.
    • Mr. Tinker added. He's a blend between his sleepy concept-art self and the alter-ego inventor of the IDW comics. Obviously inspired by my concept in the Alternate Universe thread.
    • Emerl has been cut in favor of G-merl. Just feels weird to have Emerl in what with his canonical death and the fact that G-merl has made many more appearances since the Advance games than Emerl has, so yeah. Also I never played Battle but am a fan of the IDW books, so yeah, I just like G-merl more.
    • Arthur has been cut, as I found he doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in the context of this game. Sure, his name's on the cover of SatBK, but he's not the main villain, and including him just feels like going "lol remember when sonic had a sword and fought king arthur???? lmao". Merlina feels like a much more sensible pick given she's the center of the game's narrative and has no shortage of cool villain stuff on her own. She could maybe be a stance character, going from her peaceful form to her evil one and vice versa on the fly.
    • Motobug replaced by badniks. Honestly I could go either way on this one, I just like the idea of a team of them.
    • Scratch & Grounder added - the OG roster was waaaay lacking in 90's alternative media reps, so yeah, needed at least one. They'd basically use dumb traps and beat each other up for the entire match as their attacks.
    • Surge added because she's cool.
      • By now you may notice a large amount of IDW reps, and to that I say...well yeah they make good ****in' characters, I just like a whole lot of them and so I put 'em on here.
    • Sticks added. Apparently she's canon to Sonic now btw. Huh.
    • Mr. Tanaka added. I think this is unironically the best pick I could've gone for from Sonic X. He's got some great action scenes and envelops the "filler" aspect of X as well.
    • The guest characters are unchanged, apart from Nazo, who is new. I feel like at least one genuine Sonic fan character should make it in, and Nazo kind of represents that whole "original character do not steal" thing, but also the "kids who grew up playing Sonic and watching DBZ" and "awesome character who could easily beat sonic in like four nanoseconds" things.
    • Removed Zavok. Honestly I didn't even realize this until I finished the roster. Eh, he's nice to have but I won't miss him.
    • Removed Rookie, another "take it or leave it" thing for me honestly.
    • Flicky is gone. I honestly forgot I added her in the original roster, and I'll be sure to put her back in in the next update.

-Milhouse, Nelson, Ralph Wiggum, Chief Wiggum, Barney Gumble

So we all remember Super Mario Smash Bros., right? Good thread. What if it had an Ultimate-sized roster?

Funny story - I wasn't planning for guest fighters at first, but when I was about 3/4s done with the roster, I realized I screwed up and added more columns than I needed (hence all the double click to add images, heh). If it weren't for that, I wouldn't have included Sonic.

Here's an interesting one: what if Konami were to have a crossover, but in a hypothetical world where their ugly breakup with Kojima (and their inorexible and slow movement away from the entire video game industry) didn't happen? Well, here I am with a roster that took too long to make because my PC has been actively fighting against me all day. Help

  • Bomberman is essentially an icon of Konami's library - and whilst I've not got these characters in any particular order, I think he'd be the main "icon" of the game. As for his moveset, he's probably not the most mechanically basic (that'd go to Frogger), but he's simple enough to pick up and understand.
  • Snake is based loosely on his Smash interpretation, though moreso on his actual games and the like. A more clear stealth-based inspiration, combining tools and equipment from across the Metal Gear Solid series, would lend to a solid all-round character with good tools across the board.
  • Alucard is actually the default Castlevania character in this game, and his moveset almost completely pulls from Symphony of the Night in how it works (with minor elements of Dracula's bosses just for flair.)
  • Twinbee is a solid rep to have given their unique mostly aerial nature, plus their generally fun design and interesting representation of Parodius. There's not all that much to add here - they're scrimbloy enough to be simple to pick up.
  • Mami/Nyami are our BEMANI reps, though in this case they're kind of like Olimar/Alph in that they're alts of each other. Their moveset is primarily dance-based, perhaps having minor elements of rhythm in charged attacks, but mostly just capturing the "vibe" of their source material.
  • Yugi is the obvious pick for a Yu-Gi-Oh rep, though I did briefly consider also including someone like Seto Kaiba. His moveset's mostly focused on summoning and the like, taking inspiration from the anime more than anything else.
  • Bonk could be an unlockable pick, mostly pulling from his original nature and having a lot of transformations as individual moves.
  • Raiden is also an unlockable character, based on his Metal Gear Rising: Revengenance appearance but also having a Metal Gear Solid 2 costume. He'd play with a heavy rushdown vibe, centred on flurries of attacks and a couple of powerful striked in the mix too.
  • Simon Belmont is, perhaps controversially, unlockable - and again, he's mostly just a representation of "classic Castlevania" in many ways.
  • Moai is a solid rep for Parodius, and whilst I did consider Vic Viper in his place (or its Zone of the Enders interpretation) I ended up settling with a more unusual but fun pick to have around. He's a massively heavyweight character with plenty of ranged tools and solid defence, but suffers by being slow.
  • Bill Rizer/Lance Bean/Probotector are all here too... though under the umbrella of a single character slot (with them being alternate costumes and the like.) I considered making the latter a clone, but didn't feel it was justified. They're your archetypical Contra gameplay in a fighting game format. Nuff said.
  • Fuma felt like a somewhat necessary "throwback" inclusion given the general reverence for Getsu Fuma Den within a lot of Konami's work, and having his moveset take inspiration from different Japanese sword combat styles feels like a solid way to make him particularly unique amongst the cast.
  • Konami Man was an obvious inclusion considering that he's essentially the icon of a "Konami crossover", even featuring as the main character back in Wai Wai World. As for his characterisation, I'd say go full tokusatsu with his general vibe - to a slightly comic extent, poking a little bit of fun at him.
  • Power-Pro Kun was a little odd at first, but I felt the sporting vibe would work well for the roster (and I was hardly going to add a PES character.) His moveset, being based around baseball, pretty much writes itself - he'd be a pretty approachable pick with some mechanical complexity.
  • Pyramid Head is a superheavyweight who reeeeally leans into that "horror" inspiration, though in this case his whole deal is mostly just singular, powerful strikes. He's very slow, very big, and very powerful, so watch out! He's probably not well-suited to something like this, but he is iconic...
  • Goemon just feels like he'd be a lot of fun, and I think he's generally just an interesting pick to see included here. Again, he'd mostly keep things nice and simple in terms of his general moveset.
  • Frogger is by far the most simple character in the entire game. If you're looking for a shoto equivalent, here he is. However, he can also throw logs and cars at you, so that's fun! Think a little like Pac-Man in this case wherein he'll primarily be based on his reboot series, but has elements of his classic vibes.
  • Tir McDohl, being the central protagonist of Suikoden, felt like the best pick in this case. To an extent, he could work a little like an archetypical "RPG hero character", but I think calling in allies for certain attacks would work well to emulate the character-driven nature of the Suikoden series.
  • Django is the main character of the first two Boktai games, and I think he'd be incredibly unique and fun to see here! Having a sun-based mechanic of some kind where he can charge up his general power over time could be cool, and general solar abilities would lend to a greatly unique vibe overall.
  • Sparkster is another scrimbloy pick who'd mostly revolve around his movement-centric abilities, coupled with a sword for good measure. Being a solid mid-90s rep and pretty popular amongst nostalgia crowds, I felt he'd be fun to have around here and would bring a unique energy to the game.
  • Yugo is essentially the main character from Bloody Roar, and whilst it's not really been relevant since the early 2000s, I thought it'd be cool to include him due to his unique mechanic - that is, his beast transformations. Also, I think that 2000s edgyness is a refreshing presence in a mostly scrimblo roster.
  • Astronots is another obscure fighting game character, but this time from Rakugakids, a massively underrated N64 title! I think his unique appearance and use of plenty of archetypical astronaut and space-themed attacks would make him so cool - and, he'd be rendered in 2D, kind of like Mr. G&W!
  • Gachami & Gachahiko would be a duo character similar to Ice Climbers, representing the Bishi Bashi series. It's mostly made up of party-based minigames and has been around since the 90s, so I felt it'd be cool - think of them as being a bit like a combination between Villager and Wario.
  • Gillian Seed is the main protagonist of Snatcher, a point-and-click game inspired by Blade Runner and made by Kojima. He'd mostly take inspiration from both his original inspiration, Deckard, whilst using elements unique to Snatcher, such as his trusty gun, his Metal Gear MKII, and a number of different plot-relevant tools and pieces of equipment he comes across along the journey.
Couple of notes: I ended up cutting Disco Afro (from Dance Dance Revolution) from my original concept mostly because Pop'n Music is more character-based and still covers the whole BEMANI side of things. Likewise, I ended up getting rid of Dracula mostly because I imagine he'd be a particularly appealing DLC pick overall. Second picks in series were only considered where they'd bring something fresh and new mechanically, hence Probotector being limited to a costume and the outright denial of picks like Seto Kaiba or pretty much anyone else from the Bomberman series. Also, there's a little bias here, but I mostly learned as I went in this case! (I think the main biased pick for me here is Gillian Seed, but I hope at least he's not too jarring!)

Okay, I've been sitting on this on a conceptual level for some time - but given their previous occasional connections and what I think would be a genuinely pretty interesting thing to see, I've cooked up an Inti Creates vs. WayForward roster! As for the gameplay, though - I feel a platfighter is most logical.

Inti:
  • Gunvolt is pretty much the icon of Inti in this case, being the main character of their flagship series Azure Striker Gunvolt. I'd say he's a lockin pick if anyone is. As for his moveset, it's simple to understand, but can have a higher degree of complexity if used well.
  • Ekoro is the representative I ended up choosing for the Gal*Gun series, given she's been a prominent character in most of the games. She's mostly long-range based with a generally lightweight playstyle, having good aerial movement but falling apart quickly when up close and personal.
  • Beck is mostly in this case based on how we might see Mega Man in games like Ultimate and Marvel vs. Capcom, primarily focused on his own basic abilities but also having access to the abilities of the bosses he faces off against in the game. He's a little more mechanically complex because of this.
  • Miriam is our representative of the Bloodstained series, and I feel like her wide variety of weapons and magical abilities lends particularly well to an interesting playstyle. It helps that she's from a Metroidvania in the first place.
  • Ami is a representative of a more obscure title - namely Inti's first, Speed Power Gunbike. She might not be the main character, but her gameplay and story is one of the most interesting. Her moveset would centre around her "gunbike", which can transform from a bike into a mech and back.
  • ViVi is another rep from an obscure early Inti title, namely Love & Destroy. A little like Ami, she fights using a mech, though in her case it's limited mostly to short-range attacks and, whilst good at evading attacks, is somewhat limited in attack power.
  • Jason is a semi-guest fighter from the Blaster Master Zero series, with his moveset primarily being focused around the attacks you can perform during the top-down segments of gameplay. His most powerful moves call in SOPHIA, his tank, for exceptionally powerful attacks of different kinds.
  • Zero is a guest fighter chosen due to the importance of Mega Man Zero in the history of Inti Creates, who's a relatively simple character to understand despite having a decently complex moveset. He uses a variety of weapons from across the series, and can imbue his attacks with elemental properties.
  • Copen is the first unlockable character from this side, Gunvolt's rival from the Azure Striker Gunvolt series. I considered a few other picks here, but he made the most sense to me. His moveset has some similarities to Gunvolt's, but he's more focused on a heavy-rushdown playstyle.
  • Shun Aiba is the second unlockable character, from the Japan-exclusive Kabu Trader Shun, a game focused on trading in the stock market. Shun's central gimmick lies in the form of a "stocks meter" - he's able to give himself buffs depending on the current state of the stocks, and can debuff opponents too.
WayForward
  • Shantae is also pretty much the icon of WayForward here, being the main character of their own flagship series Shantae. Her moveset is generally pretty simple, using her animal transformations for certain attacks as well as her hair and other half-genie abilities in unique ways, whilst being easy to use.
  • Misako/Kyoko are the main characters of River City Girls, and the idea here is that similarly to the Aegis, you can switch between them. Misako uses her baseball bat for solidly powerful mid-range capabilities, whilst Kyoko really gets up close and personal to deal a beatdown on opponents.
  • Patricia Wagon is the main character of the Mighty Switch Force! series, and kind of a rep for the whole "Mighty" series. Her main mechanics are pretty simply based on different things you'd imagine a police officer or firefighter to have, though she can also stun people by using her Switch Flash.
  • Kebako is the main character of Cat Girl Without Salad, and her moveset would really take advantage of her game's particularly wild mix of almost every genre. A lot of her attacks would take advantage of her different guns - RPG Gun, Dance Gun and Sports Gun spring to mind.
  • Boy & Blob would be a sort of symbiotic character wherein they fight together, but primarily with Blob helping out Boy or in some cases attacking on his behalf. It should be noted that the pair share a life meter, so attacking one does damage the other. Attacking Blob only does x0.8 damage, though.
  • Megadon is the main kaiju from Dawn of the Monsters, and his moveset would take advantage of his massive size and volcanic potential to make him essentially a superheavyweight akin to Bowser or the Iron Giant. He's on the larger and slower side, though, so attacking him from a distance works well.
  • Vita-Boy/Mina-Girl work together, piloting their Capsule Ship with a moveset generally centred around long-range attacks and keeping a distance. Whilst they can work up close (with their design being changed slightly to have the pair sat atop the capsule rather than in it), they work best from afar.
  • Guppi is one of the main characters from one of WayForward's earlier titles, namely Xtreme Sports. As such, her moveset would mostly centre around her use of said sports - be they by usually moving on roller skates, attacking with a BMX bike or skateboard, or even breakdancing at times, she's energetic!
  • Risky Boots is the first WayForward unlockable, and in her case she's primarily designed to take inspiration from her boss battles as well as her gameplay in the Pirate Queen's Quest DLC. She's also able to summon out Tinkerbats as a solid stage control tool should she need it!
  • Rayne is the main character of the BloodRayne series, a dhampir notable for her use of armblades in quick-paced combat (as well as her own vampiric abilities.) I think she'd be all around an interesting character to see - bringing one of WayForward's more obscure series to the limelight!
Also, I think it's plausible to suggest that characters would have rivals too! These would be:

Gunvolt vs. Shantae (Mostly due to both of them being the central "icons".)
Ekoro
vs. Megadon (Archetypical "angel vs demon" concept.)
Beck
vs. Kebako (Kebako would probably make a tongue-in-cheek observation of Beck's similarities to "some blue guy.")
Miriam vs. Rayne (Primarily due to both of their magical connections.)
Ami
vs. Guppi (Both of them are prominent for their use of vehicles, and Guppi would love to try out a Gunbike.)
ViVi
vs. Misako/Kyoko (I imagine ViVi would get on the nerves of Kyoko, but would really get along with Misako due to their personalities.)
Jason
vs. Vita-Boy & Mina-Girl (Jason would probably confuse them for mutants and feel they needed to be destroyed.)
Zero vs. Patricia Wagon (Both notable for their continued fight for "peace", albeit in very different ways. Also, Patricia thinks Zero's a fugitive.)
Copen vs. Risky Boots (Both being rival forces to the main "icons".)
Shun
vs. Boy & Blob (Both being relatively normal people aside from a little "special something" that makes them unique.)

Minor nitpick but BloodRayne is one of WayForward’s more obscure series? I’m pretty sure it’s the one besides Shantae most people have heard of just don’t really associate with Shantae, it even had a movie and everything. This could just be me but I’ve definitely seen more major publications talking about BloodRayne than all their other series besides Shantae

okay so doing some more in-depth research into this

it is slowly occurring to me that my main source on bloodrayne being "relatively obscure" is utterly terrible in hindsight and i would like to apologise

Okay, here's something some of y'all might have seen before, but a concept I've been working on for a short while. Basically, it's a question many have asked before, namely - what if Microsoft were to try their hand at a crossover fighting game? However, this one's got a few notable differences.

Firstly, this isn't an "Xbox fighter". The game would be simultaneously released on Windows-based PC platforms and on Xbox. This means that some more interesting characters from Microsoft's own history could be considered! Secondly, I'm treating Activision-Blizzard as a third-party, and essentially presuming the acquisition has failed. Thirdly, the large number of third-party characters all have to make "sense" somehow - I've chosen most of the roster based on what it can promote, or if it can be effectively taken advantage of in terms of marketing. With that in mind, here it is!

  • Master Chief is essentially the game's "icon", though I'd picture him being a mid-range to long-range zoner with some effective tools. He's an obvious pick to represent the Halo series, and would have numerous weapons from the series as a whole.
  • Arbiter (Unlockable) would utilise a number of weapons more closely associated with the Covenant, and is present here mostly as a semi-antagonistic pick whilst also having had the interesting distinction of having been playable. They're more effective close-up due to their energy blades.
  • Atriox (Unlockable) was picked due to being a main antagonist from the most recent release, Halo Infinite, as well as having had some history in previous releases such as Halo Wars 2. He's pretty tanky - a lot of characters in this roster are, actually.
  • Steve's design in this game is more simplified, taking inspiration from his look in trailers and promotional material. In terms of his moveset, it's a similar story - he's moreso a representative of weapons, equipment and tools from Minecraft. This does make him unusual mechanically, but not too complex.
  • Piglin (Unlockable) is a representative of hostile mobs from Minecraft as well as of the Nether, utilising a wide variety of Nether-centric tools and equipment overall. I felt their humanoid design and relatively recent inclusion made them an interesting inclusion compared to other mobs.
  • Doom Slayer is a very much close-up focused character with a wide variety of tools with which to decimate the opposition, but relies heavily on constant pressure in order to succeed. He's also got his classic DOOM design as an alternate costume!
  • Tyrant/Cyberdemon (Unlockable) was selected due to being an antagonistic presence across the entire DOOM series, as well as being a fan-favourite. He's one of the tankier characters in the game, putting his rocket launcher to good use by tossing powerful explosives around!
  • Battletoads are all here, lead by Rash. They're generally going to take hints from their various releases and work a little like a tag-team, though you'll usually play as Rash and only certain attacks will have the other Battletoads hop in to cause some chaos.
  • Joanna Dark just about made selection due to the upcoming Perfect Dark and her potential presentation as a "throwback" pick. She'll take a lot more inspiration from her nature as a spy than others, giving her a uniquely interesting playstyle compared to other candidates. It was a little difficult when thinking her up, but I eventually decided she'd be interesting enough to make sense.
  • Fulgore (Unlockable) was selected as a solid third-party representative whilst also being another "throwback" pick to satiate the fans of the game. 2013's Killer Instinct was generally well-recieved and is still on Game Pass, and the series has plenty of history. Fulgore was picked over Jago for interest. As for his appearance, his 2013 appearance is an alt, but his classic arcade look is his primary appearance in this case.
  • Senua (Unlockable) is mostly picked due to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice being particularly well-recieved critically, as well as having a sequel in the works. She's a more obscure pick overall, and felt a little... off at first due to the game's subject matter, but her gameplay lends well to inclusion here.
  • Kait Diaz is the default Gears of War pick for this roster, acting as a solid promotional pick for Gears 5 and using tools and equipment from that game. She's on the lighter side as a "person with gun" character overall.
  • Marcus Fenix (Unlockable) is an unlockable pick, chosen due to his constant relevance in the Gears of War series and likely fighting with weapons from the older games in the series. His default design in this game would be his Gears 5 look, but he would have a more classic look as an alternate costume.
  • Queen Myrrah (Unlockable) was selected as an antagonist from across the Gears of War series, but also in response to the generally middling response to General RAAM in Killer Instinct (and to deviate from most of our antagonists being heavyweights.)
  • Hero of Oakvale would be our primary Fable rep, which is usefully a series with plenty of Xbox history as well as having a remake in the works!
  • Jack of Blades (Unlockable) is selected as a second character from the Fable series, mostly because of his continuous presence and general fan appreciation. People seem to like him, so why not toss him in for some more positive reception?
  • Dovahkiin is our representative of the Elder Scrolls series, mostly picked because of the fact that Skyrim will probably never not be popular and has had a long-lasting and continued presence. Notably, his design will be brightened just a little so as to not make him look too dreary.
  • Vault Boy is picked as the Fallout representative, mostly due to his presence throughout the series and his generally really unique look compared to other potential picks. His moveset would centre around his in-series cartoons, as well as his Pip-Boy illustrations.
  • Razputin is our Double Fine rep, mostly picked because he's got plenty of unique moveset potential, a relatively recent release in Psychonauts 2, and no external barganing to get him in (unlike what we'd have with characters like Grim Fandango.)
  • Ori is from a series that's relatively recent, has had solid promotion from Microsoft, and has a pretty solid reputation and fan opinion. Helpfully, they're no stranger to crossovers (having been in Rivals of Aether) and again cashes in a little on some indie goodwill.
  • Arkantos (Unlockable) is the main character of the Age of Mythology series, a spinoff of the long-running Age of Empires series - and usefully having a remake in the works as well as being from a game that's been semi-active for nearly 15 years. Usefully, he actually has a name too.
And, our third-party picks,
  • Castle Crashers were picked as a bit of a wild-card to give the roster some flair, generally cashing in on some indie goodwill whilst also having a generally solid history with Microsoft. Castle Crashers Remastered is also, usefully, on Game Pass! I imagine you'd be able to switch between the knights for different attacks and the like, or maybe could be a single knight with all of their abilities..
  • Cuphead was selected mostly because of his original game's Xbox exclusivity as well as very positive reception, the continued support in terms of things like DLC and the animated series, and the actual IP holder (Studio MHDR) likely being very willing to allow his usage considering his inclusion in Smash.
  • Peashooter is our first EA character, and a representative of the Plants vs. Zombies series. I mostly picked them because the PvZ series has a few solid Game Pass games included there, but also because EA Play is a big part of Game Pass and one that can't be ignored. PvZ is also usefully a popular and long-running series that shows no signs of drawing to an end any time soon.
  • Isaac Clarke (Unlockable) from the Dead Space series was selected due to his series having a solid history with Xbox, as well as the upcoming remake of the first game, coupled with already-existing cross-promotion using Fortnite. Being another EA pick, he's also in a good spot considering their good relationship.
  • Tracer is arguably the main character of the Overwatch series from Activision-Blizzard, picked mostly to promote Overwatch 2 as well as in recognition of the series' cross-promotion in a wide variety of ways. I can imagine the company jumping at the chance to promote her here.
  • Sylvanas is a prominent character from the Warcraft series who's enjoyed relevance since essentially the game's release. Not only this, she's also able to promote other products from Activision-Blizzard such as Hearthstone, and is generally liked by fans of the series.
  • Jinx is picked here as our Riot Games rep, considering they've included League of Legends into the Game Pass service - a particularly popular IP that's been around for some time. Jinx is picked due to being a fan-favourite character and a promotion for Arcane.
  • Ryu Hayabusa (Unlockable) is primarily picked due to the Ninja Gaiden series' connection to the original Xbox, but the Ninja Gaiden series has continued to enjoy relevancy from as far back as the 1980s all the way up to 2021 with the Master Collection. Furthermore, as a Koei Tecmo rep, he's also technically a representative of Dead or Alive and the Warriors series, effectively wrapping up a lot of their notable IPs with his inclusion.
  • Ragna the Bloodedge (Unlockable) is primarily selected due to the upcoming BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle - Special Edition as an Xbox exclusive, and acts as a solid Arc System Works representative because of this. I considered a Guilty Gear rep, but Strive being originally not released on Xbox hurts it a little. I'll get to this!
  • Ichiban Kasuga is picked as our main SEGA rep, mostly because of the Yazuka/Like a Dragon series having a massive and prominent presence on Game Pass, as well as the series being a prominent one in SEGA's own library that I can imagine them wanting to promote. It also helps that Ichiban is a more modern face of the franchise, and it'd be a good opportunity to promote him. (I considered Ryo Hazuki for this role, but unfortunately he didn't quite fit.)
  • Guy Spelunky (Unlockable) is picked as a solid indie rep when considering Spelunky's history with the Xbox brand and the presence of Spelunky 2 on Game Pass. As well as cashing in on indie goodwill, Guy would also have Ana as an alt to represent the newer game overall. (I can't imagine Mossmouth would have a problem with his inclusion, either!)
  • Boggy B. (Unlockable) is the main character of the Worms series, which has had solid history with both Xbox and Windows as well as having a release on Game Pass (namely Worms W.M.D.) Boggy's moveset would mostly use the series' wide array of cartoonish weaponry to cause havoc! I think Team17 would be reasonably easy to work with, too - and he is their main mascot to promote in the first place.
And, well.. one more thing. A DLC round!

  • Commander Keen is picked as an Id Software rep mostly for the singular reason that he's a cool throwback pick to some MS-DOS-era games, interestingly also representing Microsoft by extension! I considered him for base roster, but he didn't really feel quite right (and it bloated Bethesda's representation a little too much). As such, he's our day one DLC pick.
  • Sol Badguy is picked primarily to promote the mid-2023 release of Guilty Gear Strive on Xbox, as well as promoting the game as is on Windows platforms. Given Arc System Works have already been involved with the base roster's inclusion of Ragna, Sol shouldn't be too hard to grab too.
  • Creeper is an obvious inclusion at some point. Being the main icon of Mojang and of the Minecraft series makes him an incredibly clear pick, but I think his inclusion would shake up DLC discussion overall and would allow for such an experimental character to make sense.
  • The Knight from Hollow Knight is primarily picked to promote Hollow Knight: Silksong's upcoming 2023 release - as well as being released on Game Pass at launch, again acting as a promotion for that. Team Cherry seem unlikely to context this inclusion, and that indie goodwill would be cool here too.
  • Viper is selected as a second Riot Games rep, this time representing the massively popular VALORANT and being a generally solid PC rep overall. I picked Viper specifically because she's been in the game since the beta, and has been a prominent character in marketing material whilst being mechanically interesting and unique.
  • Basim Ibn Ishaq is a Ubisoft rep this time around, representing the Assassin's Creed series - specifically, Mirage. Ubisoft do seem to have a connection to Game Pass with Origins and Odyssey being already there, and I can imagine them wanting to promote a newer character overall.
  • Sim was mostly picked for three key reasons - firstly, they're an EA rep and therefore unlikely to cause too many problems, secondly, they're from a particularly popular and long-running series that does have a solid base in Game Pass, and thirdly, they'd be a massive head-turner as a final DLC pick whilst also having a ton of potential in terms of mechanics and gameplay. They're not as obviously promotional as some characters on the list, but nonetheless they work well in this way.
I imagine there's likely a few questions as to some of the omissions here. Open to suggestions! I'm hardly an Xpert by any means, so I'll inevitably have screwed up somewhere.

Only 3 Rare characters, none of which are Banjo or Conker, is unfathomably based. Not keen on 2 of them being Nintendo-partnership-era and the other being pre-Nintendo-partnership, but not being "Microsoft's only iconic characters" is good enough for me.
