this is like, the imaginary instance where you think you played a 'mind game' on someone to make them side step but they really just side stepped out of habit.

I'm pretty sure Brookman has been to more tournaments than you've ever dreamed of, Peter. And he'd definitely scrape you, LOL.

Just saying I.B is still pretty legit. But he will never be a top Marth. He never goes out and yes apparently according to Ryan, he's not considered one of the top anymore

Anyone else think Taj kind of got an easy bracket at Genesis 2? Just saying...
Honestly, no.

DEHF was free but Taj was more than likely to win vs any first round opponent he'd be seeded against so that was pretty irrelevant.

I guess you could say MacD was relatively easy? Well sorta compared to like Wobbles/Hbox/Fly just given how deep in the bracket that happened so I'll give you that.

On the other hand:

Hax kicks Marth's **** in.

Mango.

I don't really see it. He caught one break by having MacD beat Fly but besides that his bracket was pretty damn hard... The only thing "easy" is that it was only a 32 man bracket so he didn't have to win that many sets to get guaranteed 3rd.

You know... `i can't really say anything towards I.B ... just kind of salty because In 2 out of 4 tournaments i've attended. He registered and was put in my pool and no showed which is frustrating because we waited for him both times, and one time I had to leave despite qualifying for brackets because we waited for him... He is legit though.

Now, dont misunderstand me. I'm not discrediting Taj as a player at all. Just compared to some other peoples brackets it seemed like matchup wise it went in his favor is ALL I'm saying.

which is hilarious since so many marth mains exaggerate how bad his matches are vs the better characters.

taj must have fought a bunch of luigi and ness players.

why don't you ask the actual marth mains what the matchups are like? instead of reading what some people post on the boards...show up to tournaments and ASK what we think.
i would take peach over jiggs/samus anyday
i would rather fight fox than falco (kudos to taj for being good against falco since...everybody plays falco in arizona)
i'm not worried against falcon or ganon
IC's are tough but do-able.
pikachu as far as i can tell is harder to fight on smaller stages.
have you ever played a luigi that knows how to fight marth? it's not free.

Good Luigi's will get off on you if you don't know what you are doing. Some Luigi's even think it's in their favor or 50-50. I use to disagree but now i think it's actually pretty close. Wait till Luigi's start showing up to more tournaments....we gonna have some tough sets.

Pretty much every character in the game has a solid punish game on Marth due to his size and weight, along with a very edgeguardable recovery. The fact that Marth is so laggy and punishable after any mistake he makes compounds this problem. Not saying he loses all his matchups or whatever but Marth doesnt really have any "Free" matchups stretching even into the low tiers.

Marth absolutely doesn't have a chance at being top tier.

The best player can play him and make him look the best, but thats if the best player isn't playing their fox.

Can TAI comment on this? Cause I've been feeling the same way recently. Now, I won't go to Dreamland or anything, but BF and FD seem a lot more appealing than YS and FoD to me..Pikas nair seems to cover the whole stage.

Where should we strike to vs. Pika and what should we counterpick? Cause I honestly don't know.

Yoshi's is still good vs. Pika. It's just double edged. I would probably prefer all medium sized stages, but even though Pika can get to you easier, you can corner him easier. The easy kills are also nice, since you'll likely die at the same percentages regardless of stage against Pikachu as Marth. Assuming you're playing someone like Axe at least.

As far as CPs go, YS isn't a bad a choice, imo. I'd probably pick between FD and YS myself.

I'll let my son share his thoughts since I almost never play friendlies against Axe's Pika as Marth.

I haven't played Axe's Pika in forever and a day, but here goes.....

DL64: This is your worst neutral against Pikachu. Pikachu will die way too late, and he will be able to recover most of the time since he has really good horizontal and vertical recovery. Marth gets infuriatingly caught under DL64 a lot of the time, and Pikachu has all the space in the world to run off and try to edgeguard you.

Battlefield: I don't mind it too much, but it's Pikachu's (read: Axe's) favorite stage, so I usually just deny him that satisfaction. I guess it's a little easier for him to edgeguard you since it's harder to aim your recovery, but there's nothing terrible about it. Also, sometimes they like to hit you with tailspikes from under BF. Pikachu just has a few tricks here and there, but there's nothing stupid about the stage. He doesn't have any broken platform tricks that I can think of, but there's that edgecancel that he likes to do between stocks, but that doesn't really affect much. I'd say this is the second worst behind DL64, but that's not really saying much.

Final Destination: I personally think it's one of Marth's better options. Sometimes you can trap Pikachu in the air, with those juggles, the ledges seem to be pretty cool with Marth's recovery and with techs, and it's generally just my favorite stage with Marth.

Yoshi's Story: Also one of Marth's better options. I'd go either here or FD. It's good for Marth against Pikachu for the same reasons it's good against anyone else. You get early vertical kills, and the platforms are usually pretty good friends of yours. Also, if you know the Randall timing (which I do), that's an added bonus. Also, Pikachu (read: Axe) tends to not like this stage as much because the blastzone isn't very low, so he can't go far offstage for edgeguards like he can anywhere else. The high blastzone generally favors you more than it favors Pikachu. Also, if you're ever at 68%, it's easy to go down to the line and get that extra 1 for a 69%

Fountain of Dreams: No comment, really. I'd say this is better than Battlefield and DL64, but it's not as good as YS and FD. High ceiling might be useful, and the ledges aren't designed to **** you in the ***. Go here if you want.

Pokemon Stadium: This is an okay stage as long as you don't get caught in an infinite on any of the transformations. Idk, I've always sorta liked PS, though, since it's like FD but there's platforms that give you easy tippers.

YS/FD > FoD/PS > BF > DL64

this is random but...

TAI is a straight up BEAST

having played him for 2 days straight, i have many great things to say about him

he is probably the most creative marth player ive ever had the pleasure of playing against! and yes ive played pewpewu, bob$, falcomist, and mew2king. i've seen him do things that no other marth does... I believe if TAI keeps his passion for melee strong like it is right now, he will one day become the best marth player!

my only regret is not being in the best health when he came down to play me. hehe but it couldnt be helped.

Tai is my son.

I must be ********, too. I'm pretty sure Eddie Mexico would **** my **** if I played him. I'm completely open to the idea that I don't play match-ups correctly, but just based from my experience playing both characters... I'd rate it as a 55-45 or a 60-40 Marth's favor depending on stage. Luigi is not necessarily free for Marth. The current metagame Samus/Doc/Luigi vs Marth is really **** or be *****, imo.

I'd go into more detail... but I'm ********.

Gah, I hate posting stuff.

Tai is amazing, everyone be more like Tai. He seems so happy when I play Marth nowadays.

I'm going to make him into a MOTHER ****IN MONSTER!

I hope he understands and appreciates why I play every character against him.

I love my son.

you should play whatever character you think you'll go farther with. You've got something special with mewtwo but he's a really bad character. It's either get over that or learn the matchups you aren't so hot in with marth. Like falcon, i know you beat hax but seriously you shouldn't be afraid of falcon with marth. (i suppose SS HAS scarred you for life though :/)

I wish I had a smash father :(

But yeah, TAI is awesome. Those recent vids were so cool. I especially liked the shorthop uair/waveland option select for platform tech chases. Sexy sexy.

Haha I love AZ analysis.

thanks! that means a lot to me. makes me all warm and happy inside, no homo :) even though you were sick, you were really amazing practice. try to play more smash once you move to fullerton, JR! you're super good yourself. anyway, i hope that i can prove you right on that last part about me *keeps fingers crossed*

i love my dad. he gives me good matchup experience so i can get a good overall perspective of how to play marth and so i don't get tapped by janky, gimmicky random low-tier players. i appreciate everything he does for me and i can't wait to play obscene amounts of melee with him and wobbles once i move into ASU. the amount of **** practice we're gonna get is SOOO UNFAIR. AZ is gonna take over the next big tournament ;)

this is gonna be AZ's new theme song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLnS-2h_nog

Right, because the Marth mains who actually go out and play this game at tournaments vs. high level people are the ******** ones right? When was the last time you went to a tournament or did anything of value besides talk about the good old days and how wrong all the people who actually PLAY this game now are?
