Correction about something I posted yesterday: the Star Wars Hotel is not a cruise ship. The fact I could get 3 hours into a video essay about it and confidently believe it was a cruise ship on water until the concept of getting a bus to and fro the hotel is mentioned just shows how dumb this whole thing is.

I still think the "cargo smuggling" storyline is questionable.

I'm watching the Star Wars hotel video essay, and I just find it really weird that a cruise ship would have any kind of diegetic imagery related to "cargo smuggling". It's not inapproprate subject matter per say, and it'd probably be fine at a theme park where the hotel and attractions are well-seperated, but as something on a cruise ship? Where there's actual luggage within close proximity of The Game Thing? It's like having a "pretend to eat people's faces as a leopard" event at a zoo.

I've been starting to warm up a bit to the idea of live service Smash. If they want to please everyone with their rosters, this is the only way they can do it.

As a whole, I've never inherently minded the idea of a large Smash roster, even though I may have said some things that imply otherwise. Other external factors simply make the way Smash handles it currently bad (attempts at competitive appeal, prestiege marketing that poses Smash as akin to a knightship, and generally bad roster decisions in particular) - in a game that leans heavy on online F4A and has a rapid stream of new characters of varying hype factor, it would be perfect.

One weird response that comes up a lot when I say a game is better than its sequel (64/Melee and NASB1 specifically) is "you're disrespecting all the hard work the devs put into it!" and like... in a charitable reading, that's mild emotional manipulation, and at worst, that's a hypocritically backhanded way of saying the first game took no effort to make in disguise as a complement.

While my primary issue with them is their insistance on having genuine stakes instead of just being a silly fun adventure with multiversal friends, I think one of the things serverely missing from Smash's story modes is an element of "meta" - not in the sense of "Isn't this all a bit weird? Wink wink nudge nudge" but in the sense of "these are video game characters inside a video game." The only thing Smash's characters have in common - even within just the first party lineup - is video games, it makes no sense to put them together into a story and not tell a story that is directly, non-allegorically (in case someone brings up the MatPat theories) about video games. They don't even have to be aware they're in a video game necessarily

I'm surprised nobody has brought up that Multiversus' rifts mode actually has pre-rendered CGI cutscenes. You'd think with the lack of cutscenes being such a major criticism of modern Smash, that'd be something people would be gassing up hard. I guess 2 out of 3 thus far are performing double duty as trailers, but still.

I have mixed feelings looking back on K. Rool's inclusion in Smash. On one hand, he's one of the best designed SSBU newcomers, a really fun character, and represents a great classic game series - but on the other, he got in through the ballot, which I feel was super exploitative; he contributes to the major issues of SSBU's roster being too monetarily-minded by being a fan demand pick; and a lot of his supporters did have a kinda strange (even if not necesarilly malicious) ulterior motive where they wanted him as a trojan horse to get him in a new DK platformer and not Smash alone. I might just be thinking of this negatively because being so excited for K. Rool was a bit of a minor trauma for me, but still.

I just read the officially-released Pibby storyboard and it's both sad and a little funny how people were expecting the show to be a commentary on strict corporate possession of dormant IP when in reality it seems to more be taking aim at meme and remix culture in a kinda spiteful way.

It's weird too, because despite that "don't corrupt our precious IP" vibe, it (at least judging from this probably-non-final storyboard) also seems very resentful towards the kind of show Pibby as a character is pastiching - Pibby's friends seem less like "over-sheltered innocents in a scary situation" and more "absolute idiots who walk into death like lemmings", feels a lot more Happy Tree Friends than the relatively serious tone of the trailer.

Watching an MVS tierlist video and

Listening to someone seriously talk about The Rock's Black Adam as a fighting game character feels borderline like they're being exploited.
There's a nice irony to the best character in the 1v1 gamemode being Jake, a character who likely only got in (at least so early) because of the 2v2 focus.
