Penny's Big Breakaway is really good, best 3D Sonic-style movement I've ever seen; and you can see influence taken from a very plentiful and diverse set of platforming and non-platforming games (Ristar and Mario 3D World are especially apparent as influences), but whoever decided that "let's make our entire set of mooks the baby Goombas from Mario 3" should get a stern talking to.

I got recommended a video from an FNF fan channel about the game's inactivity, and it's really weird? He's treating the slow progress of blog updates and reveals as if it's some kind of crime or moral slight? and he pulls up recent blog updates that show clear as day it's still being worked on, and complains because they don't actually reveal anything about the final game? The info he's complaining about being "boring" is actually kinda interesting too, a lot of neat BTS game dev system stuff.

Seriously, classic Sonic games are so much better with Smash-style shoulder button jumping.

Something I find interesting about the public domain is the ability to make crossovers that aren't crossovers, if that makes sense. Count Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster were created nearly a century apart and their source material had wildly different tones, but because of the public domain they're considered long-standing sidekicks or rivals in a lot of works without any multiverse shenanigans. I'm glad to see that a lot of Mickey/Oswald projects are incorporating Felix and Pooh just as part of the world, for instance.

I know that objectively it's just an nonsensical-out-of-context reference, but I really like how one of Squidward's voice lines in NASB 2 is "Forget the book!" because it implies that Squidward has some kind of long-standing literature-based grudge with every single character on the roster.

Kirby being chosen as the WOL survivor because "he would canoncially be able to" is so, so lame. Don't get me wrong, Kirby has a lot of merit as the starter character from a gameplay perspecitve (easy character to learn, copies help players transition to using other characters), and creator bias is valid, but using Death Battle logic in storytelling sucks, even for something extensively storyless. Feels weirdly emblematic of the Namco-era Smash creative process, where everything seems to be based on numbers and objective research instead of just what'd be cool, silly, or meaningful.

Public-domain scavaging is very, very fun once you know what you're doing. Until Mickey/Pooh, I think it was only really superhero fans who were interested in PD, which is fine, PD superheroes are really cool even if they aren't my style, but it means there's a lot of comedic and non-fighting characters nobody has really put 2 and 2 together on, both well known characters that have evaded view, and completely obscure and/or forgotten characters.

I feel like NASB fandom has the same "thinking one area of their game's source material net is more important/popular than everything else inherently" issue as Smash fandom, but instead of Nintendo games it's 2000s Nick. In no world are Oblina and Powdered Toast Man deep cuts, at all, let alone moreso than El Tigre and Jenny.

Might be biased since I find most fan demand picks and logic for games I'm interested in mediocre-to-awful and find adhering to it too heavily and indiscriminately to be a giant burden on roster quality, but I don't like fan roster polls. Half of the time less people have participated than there are AD years, and the other half it's a complete fabrication.

World of Light is really weird from a tonal perspective. The CGI cutscenes are needlessly dark, falling into the same pitfalls as Subspace, but the actual mode itself is really lighthearted, silly, filled with tiny little references, and generally feels in line with what I'd personally want from a Smash story mode. It's a shame that WOL is - like many Nintendo creations - just summarised to "WOAH, EDGY KIDS' GAME!" based on the intro and bad endings alone, because honestly spirit battles and the WOL world map are one of the rare highlights for SSBU IMO

I've never really got why Smash fangames like Crusade and Flash 2 include veterans at all. Even with the big rosters these games can achieve with their unlimited dev time and asset access as freeware, I feel like playing into "WOAH NEW CHARACTERS" seems smarter.
