It's genuinely insane just how little "mascots" there are in the gaming industry. The more I look into this subject the less mascots I realize there really are. Did you know that Hudson Soft never used either Bonk or Bomberman as mascots?
When I do this I am ignoring: 1. indie studios (Shantae would be here otherwise), 2. companies that only work on one franchise (Red would be here otherwise), and 3. characters who do not have their own games (such as the Neversoft Eyeball or Johnny Turbo)
The criteria a character needs to meet is that they represent the company as a whole in marketing, not just their own games.
- Mario (Nintendo)
- Sonic (Sega)
- Pac-Man (Namco)
- Astro Bot (Sony, Worldwide)
- Toro Inoue (Sony, Japan)
- Space Invaders (Taito)
- Crash Bandicoot (formerly, Sony, under license from Universal)
- Gex (formerly, Crystal Dynamics)
- Aero the Acro-Bat (formerly, Sunsoft, probably US only?)
Everyone else who's described as a mascot either just got labelled that because they're a cartoon (Bubsy, Bentley Bear, Rayman, Mega Man) or simply for being the most popular game the company has made at the time (Alex Kidd, Master Chief, Kratos)
I tried to do an echo fighter wishlist, but almost every single character I chose could be summed up as "frailer, weaker version of the same character".

I had a dream where Nintendo rereleased Wind Waker and realized "oh yeah, there are kinda weird implications to Tetra losing her tan when she turns from an edgy outlaw into a pretty monarch" so they gave Zelda a tan too, but for some reason they chose to give her vitiligo.
I think that with a lot of franchises with shifting tones (sonic), people who prefer edgier iterations are prone to responding to any criticism of edgier takes with "oh, it can OBJECTIVELY work because..." or "oh no, this was the ORIGINAL VISION because..."

I get that the primary audience for every Mario game not named "The Lost Levels" is mostly casual players and families who don't wait for games for months on end and instead just get whatever they see on TV if it conveniently aligns with a birthday, but the lack of marketing info about Mario Wonder, especially with how much ambiguity surrounds it, is a bit frustrating this close to launch - I don't know if this is normal for Mario games, the only Mario platformers I've ever been actively hyped for before were NSMBW and the Maker games, the latter of which are outliers and the prior was back when I relied on TV and WOM to find out game news.
I had a dream where I was playing Multiversus, and they implemented a new system where the game had command inputs, but it was also like a card game - you fought in front of a deck of cards, and cards would unveil with inputs on them for you to enter and then use, but would disappear and take away your ability to do that input - it was really complicated but also really fun. I played as the Iron Giant and IIRC my opponent was Johnny Test's dad. That being said, the surrounding dream was quite nightmarish, since I was in a French Disneyland the size of a gas station, where all the rides are dangerously lumped next to one another.

My only exposure to "Scoob and Shag" is glancing at the TV Tropes character page, and frankly, even as someone who's not big into shonen/superhero plotlines and only reads TV Tropes as junk food internet and not because it's actually interesting or entertaining, that was one of the most "this goes hard, feel free to screenshot" things I've ever read in my life.

I had a go at making new Smash wishlists - tried to focus on the subjective, so for instance I think Kratos and Master Chief should've happened ages ago from an objective standpoint, but I like PaRappa and Clippy better so they got priority. Also tried to go by a best-case-scenario perspective - or in other words, assuming they won't be needlessly gimmicky.
Goomba is one of my 1st party MWs for Smash, probably makes the top 3 or at least 5, but it'd really all be for naught if they didn't add the blue underground Goomba as an alt.
I had a dream where there was a new Anton game called "Anton Stairs" which was a 3D beat em up where all the stages were flights of stairs, the ending had a plot twist that all the individual stairs were people trapped in metal, and the final boss was a genre switch into a Pac-Man Championship Edition clone that had needlessly epic music and took place at NASA mission control.

Continuing off of my post about wanting a Mario/Sonic crossover earlier, I don't get why people think it'd be impossible from a game design perspective - they already have the formula in Sonic Generations, make Sonic stages themed on Mario's world, and Mario stages themed on Sonic's world, you don't really have to figure out how Mario would gain the speed to run through a loop-de-loop or how quickly Sonic should be able to shred through brick blocks, just adapt memorable enemies and level gimmicks from each world into one another's level design styles - imagine kicking a red shell through a loopy rollercoaster version of the Mushroom Kingdom, and making it go even faster by outrunning and bumping into it, or wall-jumping up the Mystic Cave pit and being rewarded with a floating hybrid ? monitor containing a 1-up and pipe shortcut.
I love the idea of a Mario and Sonic crossover, but not just because of the whole historical/console war thing, but also because the idea of a blue-collar adult who's never let go of his childhood and a chilled-out teenager who wants to seem as mature as possible working together is quite sweet in a funny way. Like some weird alternate universe Goofy Movie that involves preventing multiversal destruction instead of going fishing.
If any Square-created Mario content should be in Smash, it should be the Mario Hoops 3-on-3 soundtrack. That crap goes HARD.
why does great giana sisters never come up on "worst game box art" lists. it's probably the single most well known microcomputer game to non-europeans, and has like 4 different box arts that are all crimes against taste.

Part of the reason I prefer an animated canon/Pixar-focused Disney fighting game over TVA or acquisitions comes from the fact that most of these characters have a very small amount of well-known source material, so you can make up a lot of original powers and weapons, but also have a lot of small side content like shorts and video games to source weird deep cuts from.
