It's kind of incredible how the criticism of SSBU's lack of direction applies equally to the roster and the gameplay. Like, if you said something relatively vague like "Ultimate tries too hard to make compromises between subsectors of the fandom where they're not needed", most SSBU critical people (or even fans understanding of the game's major criticisms) wouldn't know whether you're talking from a gameplay or roster perspective but also totally get it.

Honestly I feel the reason characters with minimal-to-no Nintendo ties don't appear in Smash much is just because they don't think they can market them to Nintendo fans, not some "sacred vision" on the Smash team's part.

Part of the reason why I think Smash should go multiplatform actually - obviously never gonna happen unless Nintendo goes the way of the Dreamcast, but man the opportunity to get PC/Xbox/PS associated characters, as well as the elimination of questionable choices driven by a Nintendo-centric fandom like Banjo over Chief and Mega Man before Ryu, would be so rad.

I really hate the idea that game studios' mascots inherently have to be scrimblos and vice versa. I see this a lot with Mega Man and Rayman fans, where they assume that just because they're that company's cuddliest IP they must inherently be the mascot despite them never being used in that context. "Mascot" more means say, Sonic being on the startup of the Sega CD, Mario presenting Nintendo's finanical reports, Namco having a giant Pac-Man statue outside of their building, or hell, Gex being next to the Crystal Dynamics logo on the Legacy of Kain games' boxes. Actually representing the company.

I like the Multiversus OST on its own, but it's not a good fit for a platform fighter IMO. I understand the theatrical approach given it's Warner Bros. and as such would primarily feature movie characters, but I feel a platform fighter needs something more blood-pumping and artificial-sounding. Though, I will say that the score does have an honourful, heartwarming sound to it that fits a teamwork based game well - especially for the CN stages

IMO Rivals is probably the gold standard for platfighter OSTs in terms of how it fits the gameplay.

While Fortnite having mature IPs is appreciated, I do wonder why they don't have that many IPs that directly appeal to their biggest (even if probably not intended) demographic of 7-to-12 year olds. The lack of a Disney or Pixar skin of any kind especially seems weird given how much Disney's loosening up on that sort of thing lately and the existence of Marvel/Star Wars/Fox content. Buzz Lightyear would be a perfect fit.

I feel that once you peel back the toxicity, both sides of the "scrimblo" debate have a point - Smash is supposed to be a mega-mass-appeal game so lacking scrimblo bimblos in the DLC is a major failure on its part, especially given that it is a platform fighter and thus platformer fans will be attracted to it; but on the other hand the fandom for cartoony characters can be - intentionally or otherwise - extremely ruthless in silencing fans of more realistic or anime-esque (and more often than not infinitely more important) characters from the same company just because Mario is on the game box. (Ezio vs. Rayman for example)

One idea I had for a creation thread was a play on the "unfinished games" criticism by having to handle the post-release of and justify the price for a vintage classic as a modern triple A release. Like, trying to add enough content to Pong to justify making it a £50 purchase or something.

It must suck to be a fan of both Multiversus and NASB - I find it really hard to get over my tribal instinct to assume anyone praising or expressing excitement for MVS on NASB-related spaces is doing it out of malice (even though they very clearly aren't most of the time), and it probably goes the same way for vice versa.
