  • Out of all the Game-&-Watch-fication moveset reworks I've ever seen, this sole move change is the one that offends me the most. This simple image speaks volumes about Smash fan revamps and how much they miss the point.

To be fair, I get the Dash Attack, Side Smash (though I'd have it resemble Kirby's side special rather than the image shown), Down Smash, and Side B. Everything else just kinda feels mismashed for the sake of references.

Tbh the down tilt is literally Kirby's equivalent of a down tilt and works well

Also, I believe the reason Plasma is his down special is because Plasma has unique mechanics in Kirby (The more kinetic energy you build up, the stronger it is) so that's probably what they were aiming for (I hope, anyway)

I do understand the argument for the Slide Kick being a down tilt, but I find that it's reserved for more gimmicky characters like Cloud and Min Min. I'd be happy either way, though; The Slide Kick's absence is honestly my biggest gripe with Kirby's moveset.

Also I assumed the same thing about Plasma. Not that it makes me like the idea, but...
If Terry getting in Smash was a wakeup call to Nintendo fans that the gaming world doesn't revolve around Nintendo, Miner Willy; Monty Mole; Hungry Horace; or another microcomputer character would be an air raid siren - especially given their very existence contradicts the "ROB saved all of gaming!" exaggeration.
I had a go at a Fighter Pass that would represent the most major parts of gaming history either untouched or underutilised by Smash.
Replaced my Venasuar Ivy alt with Bulbasuar in the Bonus DLC thread - however, I'd like to keep Proto Man if he is still eligible (not sure since you didn't say anything about it for a while)

    1. Proto Man can stay!

    2. Will fix that

    Extremely sorry, I was asleep

It's all good! Edited my post to include Proto Man, if you wouldn't mind swapping him out for the Rocket Grunt real quick in the submissions post that would be sweet.

Hold up, I forgot about my 1st parties only rule, Proto Man can't stay - extremely sorry, just early thread confusion, getting used to the rules you've set up is just as hard as rules that have been set up. He'll certainly be elegible come one of the many characters with Capcom Mii Costumes.
A lot of NFT art I feel I can literally smell. Smells like an outdoor grey market - next to a butcher's shop and abandonded VHS store that's sign hasn't removed since 2004, inside a seaside city already damned by pollution and factory smokestacks as is - where they're selling fake Pokémon cards with way too many holographic flowers, and novelty T-shirts of childhood heroes consuming illegal substances.

To me is smells like a dull, lifeless, office. The reek of cardboard and watered damaged ceiling tiles permeate the air as the corporate atmosphere crushes the souls of those working. One man takes a fish oil testosterone pill, desperate to revive his lost vigor and depressing love life. The woman in the cubicle next to him wonders, wonders if she will ever find an escape. She painfully pulls her grey hairs, a feeble attempt to retain her beauty. On the other side of the building, a man grabs a bottle of cough syrup. He contemplates for a moment, and decides now is not the time. He has people to care for, and once they are well off he will do it. A bright eyed youth walks into the building, excited at the prospect of a new job and finally making a decent living. As he enters, another man leaves holding a box. His eye bags droop like a wet sock on the radiator, completely devoid of hope, and looks at the youth with pity. He reminisces on his first day, how he was exactly like the youth. He knows what will happen to the youth, but can do nothing. He leaves the area and goes to McDonalds to drown his sorrows in artificially flavored sauces and plastic burgers. The employees look at him with disgust, how he gorges on his happy meal. Soon, he will have to go home to his wife and children, and tell them that daddy no longer has a place to work. To tell his wife once again “We’ve gone through worse, we can get through this.” He slumps on his moldy couch and watches the television. He finally slumbers, finding solace in sleep…
NOOOO! YOU CAN'T JUST PREFER 90S CARTOONS WITH FART JOKES OVER MODERN/2000'S CARTOONS WITH EPIC STORIES! BOOMER! NOSTALGIA BLIND! 90S KID!

The simple fact of this matter for me is that I haven't had access to most of the 80s/90s cartoons all my life (in fact 90% of NASB's roster is stuff I've never seen an episode of), while I have been able to watch (and really enjoy) modern shows with their crazy lore. I have really been wanting to get into the older stuff though. I'm probably going to break down and get Paramount+ just for access to Nick stuff (not to mention the upcoming Knuckles show).

That is fair, this is moreso a response to negativity aimed towards 90s cartoons and their fans and the treatment of them as "inferior" and "nostalgia blind" respectively than just people enjoying lore-heavy shows more in generap.
The reasons I prefer NASB over Smash are...
    1. Air dashing and wavedashing
    2. Insane speed
    3. Seperate strongs and lights
    4. Fun projectile mechanics
    5. Hitstun high enough to perform meaningful combos at a low level
    6. Low input lag
    7. Good online
    8. Movesets not held back by source accuracy or gimmicks
    9. Brighter, more stylised graphics
    10. Doesn't take itself seriously aesthetically or tonally
    11. Roster primarily consisting of non-combatants; retro characters; and hideous freaks
    12. Consistent as a crossover
    13. Doesn't overhype its fighters
    14. That sick air-taunt getup attack thing
    15. Could potentially have Rocko
    16. Does not have Pyra & Mythra
The only place where it counts I think Ultimate succeeds is the stage selection, I can't speak on items until their update releases.

I’d argue that although ultimate exceeds the variety of stages available, NASB has infinitely more stage theme variation. especially considering how plenty of stages could just be a character’s house or cityscape with a different skybox, by virtue of what most nicktoons are.

nothing will compare throughout NASB’s reveal period to my hype upon realizing what powdered toast trouble was - invoking the comedy and spirit of the show moreso than any “psychedelic splatter” stage could achieve.

Absoultely, it would've been really easy for Ludosity to just cheap out and make every stage "character's house" or "character's favourite restaurant", even moreso than it's easy for Smash to default to grassy plains (which, well, they have), so I appreciate seeing non-fixture locations like the Dutchman's Ship; Teeter Totter Gulch; Royal Woods Cemetary; and Glove World, or different takes on the "home town" concept like Traffic Jam. I just kinda wish the Loud House stage took place inside the house instead of outside to distinguish it a little from the CatDog stage (though, both are understandable choices for "house" stages given how iconic one's imagery is and the other being in the show's title)

I hope that when they get to the more kid-protag-centric 2000s shows in DLC, we don't have a ton of school stages.
If they try again at a console Family Guy game, it should be a WarioWare clone where the main difference from WarioWare (other than the adult humour and direct pop culture references) is that the microgames can vary in length greatly, and the story is told between the cutaway gag microgames instead of at the beginning and end of each level.
I have a really cool idea for a mini-creation thread, and it's simple enough to coexist with SMSB without taking attention away from it.
I think one of the problems with Smash discussion is that it's one of the biggest budget franchises from a company known for and open about making most of their products cheaply, and primarily features characters from older; ubiquitous; or niche games - and therefore it's judged from the same standards as the smaller games it represents and shares Nintendo Direct space with because its fans aren't familiar with Smash's proper triple A peers, and never stop to think of Smash as a big; hypermarketed product that needs a high level of scrutiny just because it doesn't have Dorito bag promotions like Halo and CoD, while also assuming all games could have as much content as Smash regardless of budget or niche factor.
I really like how the Atari compilations include all (or at least most) versions of a game - so they'll have Asteroids, Asteroids 2600, and Asteroids 5200. I wish Sega compilations did that, and I wish Nintendo compilations were just a thing... in general.

Then again, there aren't many ports of Nintendo games, at least within the retro time frame and excluding Rare - some Game Boy ports of NES and SNES puzzle games; GBA ports of SNES games; Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and All-Stars; microcomputer ports of arcade games; the BS-X Zelda remakes... there's probably some more but it's a pitifully low amount compared to how many Sega games were cross released between the Mega Drive; Arcade; and/or Master System/Game Gear.
I've mentioned this before in the critique Smash and unpopular opinions thread, but may as well say it here: Smash Ultimate trying to be a "celebration of gaming" feels really ill advised when they've got a fandom that didn't know who Terry Bogard is; rooted for Banjo-Kazooie in an imaginary war against Minecraft; and were upset about Sephiroth's addition disconfirming a one-off Mario character.

G Guynamednelson made a really good point about the celebration thing on the NASB thread during a Multiversus discussion, which I will quote here
Well that's the thing: It's a "Celebration of gaming" that's extremely biased in Nintendo's favor still. SSBU was probably the worst Smash to use as a base for making Smash "transcend Nintendo", as
    1. "Everyone Is Here" means only having to bring back one third-party that wasn't in 4 and preserving what was mostly a Nintendo-focused selection of characters
    2. Catering to ballot requests means catering to a Nintendo-focused fanbase, even Simon and Banjo's requests were about their Nintendo connections.
    3. World of Light has you mostly fighting stand-ins for Nintendo characters, and it being easier to port 2D images to any game engine than 3D models means the game covers more of Nintendo than ever before.
    4. Limited DLC resources mean a lot of iconic gaming franchises couldn't join the battle, and said limited resources were still spent on three first-parties and a third-party whose Microsoft days are considered their low point. And for those who wanted to see absolutely unrepresented franchises, FP2 sucked for you since only two franchises in it had absolutely nothing in Smash prior to the pass.
    Nah
    Nah
I mean, it should be obvious that Smash never was and never can be a true "celebration of gaming". Smash has always been a Nintendo IP, and so will always skew towards Nintendo and Nintendo-affiliated games/series. No company is going to not skew in favor of their own stuff.

Video games are something with a like half-century long history with a lot to it and a lot of people to please. The only way you could even begin to create a (fighting) game that really qualifies as a celebration of gaming would be to have an absolutely massive roster, created by a new, completely independent development team for the specific purpose of creating such a game (with all the funding and resources available to the biggest name games). That can also meaningfully implement aspects of gaming history into the game that might not translate well into playable characters.

But it's not something that we can expect to happen, it would be a task possibly more enormous than the industry has ever tackled before

I don't think a true "celebration of gaming" needs an absolutely massive roster. It just needs far less Nintendo than SSBU has.

I feel the bare minimum would be an equal Nintendo-Sony-Microsoft split with Sega being not too far behind. I hate to shaft Atari but I don't think they have as much to work with as those 4, but if they had a better back catalogue of characters I'd want them to be evenly split with Sega as well. Heavy stuff to live up to, but so is the term "gaming history".
I've probably said this before, but bears repeating: Gardevoir would easily be the least interesting of its line in Smash. It just has a regular human body with a weird dress-like membrane(?), so there isn't much to distinguish it from a Zelda or Peach in terms of non-special moves. Kirilia; Gallade; and Ralts on the other hand could all some crazy moves with their twirling tutu-like shape; razor hands; and psychic-powered clumsiness respectively.
We are submitting Donkey Kong items and voting on Luigi's Mansion stages!
I'm honestly not sure if I'd prefer Shredder's Revenge to be followed up with a Simpsons arcade sequel, or a SpongeBob game in the general style of Simpsons arcade. All things considered though, if the devs do work on another cartoon IP it'll probably be Avatar given how it's already action; how little prescence it has in gaming compared to the demand for it; and how they're already working with Nickelodeon as is.
I think I'm gonna need to revise how event matches are handled in SMSB

Speaking of which, we are adding a second Luigi's Mansion stage!
One of the things I love about Pixar is that they don't do adaptations despite having a really big IP pool to draw from through Disney...

    That being said...

    Pixar's Fantasia. Make it happen.
I, strangely enough, have two highly controversial opinions relating to Smash Ultimate and the number 6.
