I agree with this Tweet, but I also want to add that the reason Gumball's expressions in the later episodes don't hit right to me is because they just put another face on Gumball's body or vice versa most of the time - I much prefer the exaggerated off-model expressions in cartoons like Ren & Stimpy; the new SpongeBob episodes; or even (accidental/lazy as it may be) Steven Universe where they actually warp the existing character design to fit the emotion rather than outright replace it like a Dio meme.
I am very curious to hear your reasoning...
