Ok first off I've been given permission by Xysven to make this thread under some very strict rules which I will post just below.

I know people are already like OMFG this can't work but here is why I think it can.

The main reason I'm making this thread is I believe the smash community as a whole has to understand that people have reasons for liking either 64,Melee or Brawl and as long as people are happy playing either one or both that is all that matters.I want to see why people have chosen one,two or all.

THE RULES

1.No flaming/arguing
,Xsyven has told me any step out of line and its an instant infraction/thread closure. :skull:

2.
Don't post anything negative pertaining to either game, just post why you personally like/play either 64,melee or brawl.(or all)

3.Don't so much respond to other posts, add to the thread as a whole,I am only interested in peoples reasons without caring about differences. If you see some post you don't like, sit down, take a deep breath and remember why you love smash(any of them or all),then tell it here.

4.Start with something like "I like playing 64 because it's got crazy 0-death combos and Pikachu is really powerfull" or "I like Melee because it's really fast and has loads of fun techs" or "I like brawl because they added loads of new and exciting characters and the air dodge is great"

5.If for some reason a post upsets you in any way, then either PM the person in question or ask me to.I think it will help if the individuals sort it between themselves instead of in the thread.Plus none of the mods have to keep tabs on the arguement(if such a thing were to happen)

Seriously guys I think this thread could be the start of something great and a huge leap in understanding between the three sides(and the ones caught in the middle). The smash series is too great to let things like personal preference and opinion hold people back from expressing their love for any of the games due to fear of retaliation from nay-sayers.Just be happy that you like your choice and be happy that the others like theirs no matter what their reasons, its actually that easy.

Thanks to Xsyven for adding the poll!

Now go post your reasons, but please, please,PLEASE stick to the rules.:)

I'll go first, and I'll play nicely, because that's how I roll. I've played and loved all 3 games. I'm a Nintendo fanboy at heart, though not militant, so when I was introduced to the original game over a decade ago, it was an easy sell. When Melee dropped, I needed a GC for it (and Wind Waker too; they were why I got one). And when Brawl was announced, I got hyped big time. I did my best to avoid following the dojo daily just because I knew it would make waiting harder, but before too long, I was checking it every night at 2 AM EST when it seemed to update. And now, I've been playing Brawl since it released, and I love it.

Now, why do I play Brawl as opposed to 64 or Melee? Well, it's the only Smash game I know anything for beyond casual play. In Melee, my strategy with Marth was to pretty much Fsmash all of the time and nair the rest of the time. I've never wavedashed, though I know the theory and could figure it out pretty easily. Also, because of my inexperience, I didn't really care too much about the things that changed from Melee. The worst thing they did from Melee to Brawl in my experience was Link no longer having any recovery moves. But I loved multiple air dodges, Zelda's buffs, and the roster. And Marth played similarly enough, though his nerfed range took time to get used to.

Within a month of Brawl's release, and probably by the end of that fateful March, I'd found these boards and was learning about how to play Brawl from the pros that were learning as well. Now, having followed along since then, Brawl still doesn't bore me, and I enjoy it quite a lot. I've been to one serious tournament, and won one of my matches, so that was fun. My friend and I are planning on going to another in the near-ish future. I've also picked up new characters. Peach has been a lot of fun, and is my 3rd. Lucas is fun to mess with too, and I've been trying ZSS. That the game still has new things to offer me makes it worth it to keep playing.

Nice Scott,perfect post!

I personally have played all the smashes a lot and prefer melee over the rest because: as a person I enjoy a high level of tech skill combined with fast pace in games.(same reason I only play the MLG playlist in Halo)I also LOVE the fact that one mistake can change everything,It just makes the really close match-ups so epic.As well as melee is the one I've developed natural reactions for.

Well when I was a kid, one day while watching my cartoons, I saw this funny comercial of guys in costumes beating each other up. I thought it was funny, and I told my mom if she could buy me the game that was on the TV. We went to the store, and got it, that game was Smash Bros 64. My sister, and I would play it all day. I would always pick Luigi, and she would pick Kirby. I had no idea who everyone was ( except Pikachu,Luigi, and Mario). I was amazed, and then a few years later I got the GC.

One day I visited my cousin, and he just got a new game called "Melee". I noticed it was the second game for the smash bros. After about a week I got enough money to buy it myself, and again my sister, and I would play all day. It was usually me, and my sister playing with items off, over, and over again. It was very fun, and then I heard of Brawl's announcement. I was pretty late when it came to the whole competitive play thing for Melee * and almost won my high school tourney, semi finals*. So I was very excited for Brawl, and even went to a forum called Brawl Central *it's kinda dead now*. I would always checked the new updates, and was very happy seeing Olimar appear. I even went to my Gamecrazy midnight release for the game. Sadly a little after a month or two after the game got out, Brawl Central kinda died. I grew away from Brawl, and never stayed for the early competitive play. Then at around January this year I picked up the game again, and practiced, and practiced for my High School Tourney * that never happened*. I wanted to make sure I got better, then I stumbled upon this site. At first all I wanted was to get better, but then I noticed this site wasn't just about Smash Bros. It is a great community that I got attached to. I started to not play brawl as much, and just hanged out around here. I still play brawl because well one I kinda got into the competiveness early and liked it, unlike melee, and two because that's what brought me to this site.

Also because of the SMash bros I researched all these characters I never new about, and that opened my eyes to many more games. Thanks to smash I have a grand collection of video games from 64 to GC to Wii. Even hand held games.

I enjoy 64 and Brawl mainly because I have never actually played Melee (yes, shoot me).

64 was fun because of the amount of glitches in it to be performed, and also because it just gives me a blast of nostalgia.

Brawl is good because of enhanced graphics, so many choices for characters, and there are so many choices to take as in gameplay from the options to the type of stages.

I swear that I will get to play Melee sometime soon so that I may discuss it with the so many Melee fans here.

I play Melee for a number of reasons. One is because of the control scheme and technical depth that the game provides, but the big reason I play Melee is because I am absolutely smitten with the game's fantastic community. Melee isn't as community-defined as Marvel vs. Capcom 2 or The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but I love Melee's community enough to make Melee my main game.

I like melee for a couple of reasons.

It fits my style really well. It's very fast-paced and aggressive. I feel it promotes thinking fast over thinking carefully. Although I'm usually the 'think carefully' type, I prefer the former for fighting games.

I love how it has so much tech skill. It was cool because each time you learned a new skill, you felt like you were more in control of your character. Over time, the controls start to feel so smooth that the controller feels like an extension of your hands. It also gives importance to practice. If you don't practice, you can't expect to play at your best, so it makes you put effort into the game.

Combos are awesome in this game. They're extremely entertaining to both perform and watch. Its really satisfying when you place and time your move perfectly to set up for the next hit. The system of DI gives the defending players plenty of options too.

It always feels like you can improve in melee. Whether it's learning a new AT, perfecting your style of play, or even studying up on frame data or match ups, there always seems to be some way to improve your game. It's always refreshing to know that the sky is the limit in how good you can get.

I don't really hate brawl, but I find it kinda lacking in these areas. I respect people who play it, though, which I feel is the root of the problem in this argument. Honestly I have bashed brawl before, but I only do that when I feel that people are treating melee like it doesn't matter. Not the best response to it, and maybe its a little hypocritical, but I'm only human. I usually try to avoid it.

As for 64, I don't really play it enough to have an opinion on it, let alone discuss it.

Poll added!

Like a lot of you, I've always been a die hard Nintendo fanboy. When my sixth grade self saw the article in Nintendo Power for Super Smash Bros, I was instantly sold. Four player fighting games with all of my favorite Nintendo characters sounded to good to be true. I bought it the day it came out, and instantly, it became a nightly ritual for my friends and I. Four players, items, the works. Eventually, I rose to be the best of my casual smashing friends, and they all stopped playing with me because I'd always win. :c

Then came Melee. I was stoked-- but I sadly didn't have the money to buy my own Gamecube... and then, no joke, my 102 year old great grandma died, like, a day after the game came out! And I got just enough money from inheritance! Lucky me! It took me a while to find a Gamecube for sale, but the minute I did, I bought it with Melee. Once again, the old ritual of nightly four player, item filled insanity was reborn. And then my friends all stopped playing with me agian because I'd always win. :c

Years came and passed, as my copy of SSBM gathered dust. I moved from Oregon to Utah, and didn't even bother unpacking it. One day, a friend from work mentioned how he rocked at SSBM. I smiled, and said "I haven't played that game in forever-- by the way, I would totally win." And thus began my competitive spark. We played together for the first time then. I mained Fox, not because he was high tier, but because I thought he was awesome. I didn't even know about tiers. Needless to say, I kicked the guy's ***, and then he started playing Fox. And then I was like "Hey, I remember this website called Smashboards I registered at back in '02, I bet they have good tips."

And then I started going to tournaments, etc, etc, mained Ice Climbers in the end, and then he moved. I sadly had no one else to play with-- we had to drive hours to play anyone, and being two poor college students, we couldn't do that much-- and now that I was the only smasher in the city, I sort of just stopped. Until the ****ing smashbros.com website opened.

****ing nightly updates kept me awake for as long as the website existed. I managed to play the game before it came to the US by traveling to Idaho to play with Buzz. Good times were had.

I personally don't prefer Brawl over Melee in terms of gameplay, but what won me over was Wifi. Sure, it's not the best in the world, but for someone who doesn't have anyone competitive in real life to fight, it's a godsend! So with that, I've converted to a Brawl player. I suck at Melee now. I love both games a ton, but more often than not, you'll find me tearin' it up with Wolf.

Wow, what a long, boring ramble about why I like a certain video game.

I play both ssb64 and melee competitively mostly because of the combo and tech skill potential of both games.

I prefer Brawl over Melee, mainly because it has more characters I enjoy playing as. Dedede, Wario, Pokemon Trainer... these character just fit my style of play much better than any other character in Melee. I don't play competitively, so that might have something to do with it (since Melee is much more advanced in the competitive area), but at the same time I honestly don't think I could play Melee competitively, simply because of the character choices. I have more fun playing as Dedede and PT than anyone from Melee, and thats enough for me.

I still love Melee though. I just prefer Brawl

I like Melee and Brawl equally. Brawl is a fun game with great characters and graphics and Toon Link is just too awesome to not main so I picked him up and became good with him. I know all his techniques and I'm tourney ready I just need to go TO a tourney. As for Melee Falco is just the ****. I fu**ing love that bird. He has crazy combos. A blaster, GREAT kill moves. The best spike in the game, shine combos. He's practically my favorite. I hate how they nerfed him for Brawl except his recovery, his side B got better although his Up B got worse. But still everything else is awful. He's only great cause of the Chain Spike and his camping ability. Nonetheless I backup Falco in Brawl. Just cause he's Falco, he'll always kick as$ IMO. And I love his new voice actor.
TL;DR I like Melee and Brawl equally. Brawl cause of graphics and Toon Link. Melee cause of crazy combos, Falco, and better gameplay. But that's just my opinion.

This awesome nice work guys.I'm glad this thread has worked out well so far lets keep the good times going.

Yeah I remember the 1st time I ever played smash. My friend called me one day and said "Ive got this new game for the 64 where loads of nintendo characters can fight each other"He told me he had already unlocked some characters like Captain Falcon.I got really excited and pretty much ran to his because weirdly Id never heard of such a game.

I remember I chose pikachu because I was huge into Pokemon at the time.My mate picked Link because he had just finished OoT.We battled for hours on end,I couldn't believe how great a game it was.We just played it anytime we could,Pikachu vs Link over and over we NEVER chose anyone else.

Then when melee came out I was well prepared,I bought it on release day and started playing it straight away.I basically(with the help of a few friends now and again)completed everything possible in the game.I beat every mode in the game on very hard with everybody, got a decent score with every character in the multi man melee's,and collected every trophy.Obviously this was over a period of many many years before I discovered smash boards.Me and my mates always played Items 4 ways.I was always winning with Pikachu(carried over from the 64 days)

Then in February of 06 I found this website and was BAFFLED by the amount of stuff Id never seen. The 1st thing I watched was Shined Blind and I nearly died.I immersed myself in the competitive side of smash(and all that holds)for years and actually became the best in Ireland.(and still undefeated)Oh yeah and I also started using Sheik when I saw what Nihonjin did to EK in the roccoco of smash tournament final(Epic epic comeback)

Then when Brawl was announced it was an intense 2 years of waiting....then it finally arrived.I played it and played it loads and convinced myself that it was the best one yet,I tried Sheik and didn't like what they had done to the f-air,so I picked up Marth and G&W.(Both awesomely fun in Brawl)I didnt play melee from the day brawl was released. But then 3 months later I went back for a game of melee with my mate Davo who had been away since before brawl was released. It was without a doubt in my mind the greatest set of matches Ive ever had.It was best of 7(Marth v Sheik all the way) and every single match went down to 1 stock each, the stuff that went down in that match should have been recorded beacause it was magic.

That's when I said no.....melee had given me so much.It brought the lads in my school year together just because we'd have so much banter while playing. Not only that but just when I thought melee was as good as it could get,I found smashboards and tournaments etc and learned everything tech wise and got to talk to soooooo many people who share this common bond with the game .

I love melee because it has been the source of so many good times in my life and apart from that something(apart from guitar, eating, drinking and sex  )that I've dedicated a lot of time to getting good at because I really really wanted it.

Your not alone in the boring ramble thing Xsyven!
Thanks again for giving the thread a go ahead.....and the poll ;)

I like Melee better but I play Brawl more because my friends like Brawl more, plus the classic controller doesn't work with Melee [or any gamecube games for that matter] and most of my GC controllers are in bad shape.

I don't like Smash [as a series] as much as I used to, maybe if there's another one I might fall in love with the series again.

So if someone's patently wrong (I like Brawl because everyone has tons of combos) we're not allowed to tell them? Bah.

I like Melee because it's really fast without being a button masher. I also like that I've never reached a skill plateau in that game, and everything I've learned has actually allowed me to defeat better and better players.

If someone is wrong about something it's an altogether different thing to being opinionated.

Just PM them or something telling them to correct it.

Plus I don't think anyone is going to try and claim something like that.

I prefer melee because for some reason i can't get any combos together in brawl. Maybe its my lack of practice with it. Plus about 6 years of my life was wasted-no, donated to melee.

I would have to say Brawl, only because I was too late for melee. I would have no doubt I would have liked melee better, had that not been the case.

Even though I knew about N64 & Melee, I was just a casual smasher at that stage, playing with friends.

The moment Brawl was released I bought it and played everyday. Came across SmashBoards, and Voila.

I remember 64(my favorite one) was my first fighting game. I had never heard of kirby then(lol little kid) and when I played him something about him and his recovery just clicked. And then I bought kirby 64. And the days of making my dad play(and beating his *** :chuckle:) so many awesome memories

I like melee and brawl equally

Melee:
-Combos
-Technical Aspect
-A deeper game overall imo

Brawl:
-More reliant on smart play
-Characters and stages
-I'm better at it :p

I never really played ssb64 much :/

I've actually been playing smash less often as of late. I just don't have as much of a passion for it like I did during the Melee days. I do play some Brawl for gits and shiggles, but thats about it. Might actually attend more brawl tournies If the mood strikes(all wolf). Pound 4 perhaps?

As far as Smash64 goes, I only play when my buddies are around.(they're n00bs at melee & brawl). But we have a blast with it. I **** with Jiggs dair combos.

Yeah I only really play once or twice a month these days, the only person who can actually play has a pretty hectic job so we usually designate a day or two to smash.

And then there is the big yearly tournament in Ireland which is really good,I wish we had more.

I prefer Melee. It's always enjoyable to play someone who's better that you, because you get to see new combos/tactics/techs, etc. And it is great to finally learn how to shine to upsmash, or another skill, because you feel a little more accomplished. And the game has so much depth. In fact Melee's depth is so great, I have doubts we will truly discover everything hidden in this great game.

SSB has the best characters combos and stages, SSBM has the best features (lightshielding, air dodge, teching) and SSBB has the best graphics and music.

To me SSB just stands out for the pure replay value. It never gets old comboing your opponent till death.

SSB is the only game with 100% good stages, item matches worth playing and a balanced cast.

Oh, and the sound effects are freaking horrible. I love it.

I don't really play ssb but i'd really like to learn how. I play melee because I really enjoy the pace of the game and all the fun stuff you can do with alot of the characters. I recently picked up brawl though, and i found that you can do alot of cool stuff in that game too. I'll always be more for melee but I like to brawl in my spare time :)

I love Melee. I don't play Brawl, and will play 64 if someone wants to, but would never suggest it. It's fun, but I prefer Melee by a lot. Major reason is that the gameplay is incredibly deep in Melee and keeps things fast and competitive.

The sound effects for the US and PAL versions of SSB64 were censored and changed.

I think Melee has the greatest replay value of all of them. The debug menu is too good.
