I love all 3 of them although I dont own SSB (yet). I play Brawl the most because it's imo the best ... idk how to describe it...it's just my kind of game. Doesn't matter though smash just plain rules.

Melee because there is so much to learn and no definitive way to win a match.
It requires quick reflexes as well as knowledge of the game.
While one move may have a better chance of landing, another move may lead into more moves in turn giving more % so there are so many little things that separate the best players from the average players.

64- I don't know, it still hasn't been released on VC yet :( .

Melee- When I got this game along with a memory card, it already had all the characters unlocked, but there weren't a lot of trophies, so the fun remained. I started playing a couple months after getting Brawl, so I have no intentions of getting competitive. Later, the memory got corrupted, and I didn't want to go through unlocking G&W and Mewtwo, so I just quit playing.

Brawl- I got the game after a friend told me the epicness of it, along with the Wii. I unlocked all the characters within two days along with my brother. I completed SSE, bla, bla, bla. I got a wi-fi connection that Christmas, and started playing Basic Brawl like crazy, despite the warnings given about lag. The lasting impression remains this very day.

Conclusion- I would play Melee more if the memory wasn't corrupted, so my decision goes to Brawl. :)

I can remember all the fun times I had with melee *stares dreamily into the sky* But when brawl came out to me melee kinda became obsolete

I have played all three, before brawl I played melee competitivly at a mid level, then Brawl came out and I didn't play melee for a long while, but a month ago I picked up melee again and I am mastering my long lost Roy again.

Although I love Melee and 64 tremendously, I have to side with Brawl.

It's not so much the game itself as it is the amazing things an SD card and GeckoOS can do to make the game just that much more fun. The characters are really great too, even though I miss Pichu too much. :(

I mostly like Brawl because of its aspects:
-Great Graphics
-More characters
-Online
-Smooth Gameplay
-Etc.

Melee is quite good also:
-Faster
-More Combos
-Wavedashing/L-Cancelling

I never played the original Smash Bros., although seeing an advert in an old Pokemon magazine (that also featured an article on the Pikachu N64, and possibly some stuff about the brand new Pokemon games, Gold and Silver, or possibly Crystal- I forget) made me want it. I recognized Yoshi, Pikachu, sort of recognized Mario, and "Zelda". I grew up with the Amiga, and Sega Master System, only getting a Mega Drive when the PSone, N64 and Saturn were going strong. Therefore, I had no idea that "Zelda" was actually called Link. Anyway, the fact that a fighting game with Pikachu was coming out made me want the Pikachu N64, Pokemon Stadium and Smash Bros. However, I never got one, and a few years later I heard that there was a new one for the Gamecube. I wanted SSM, and the Sonic games for this console, which is basically all I ever got for it XD, only ever getting around 9 or 10 games for it. I had the Gamecube for 2 years before I got SSBM for Christmas in 2005.

I played it, first character I used was Pikachu on Pokemon Stadium, before trying out Yoshi, who I couldn't use, Link, who was super cool, and actually tried out the real Zelda, before realizing she could turn into some crazy Ninja who had some really fast moves, and was a blast to use. I also managed to unlock Dr. Mario, and fought against Jigglypuff as Link but lost, thus not unlocking her. I also tried adventure mode, but I could never escape the Metroid level in time. After 3 days, I took the game back.

Not because I didn't like it, no. I really liked the game. It's just that all the time whilst playing it disc read errors kept popping up, mostly through the menus. The game was playable, but having to insert the disc 3 times each time you selected something from the menu detracted from the experience. The shop had no more copies left, so I got Project Eden (a great game, but one that recently corrupted :(), and NanoBreaker.

When I heard of Brawl's release I followed the Dojo every night, and around the time of release checked up on the IGN forums often. However, the upcoming/delayed UK release of Brawl made me want to play Melee again, which I ended up getting around the time SSBB was released in Japan. I played this quite a bit, although most of the games I played on until SSBB's release were Super Paper Mario, Galaxy, and Secret Rings. However, I played enough to unlock all characters and most stages, and I began to enjoy playing as Marth, Jigglypuff, Luigi, Falco, Game and Watch, Mewtwo, Young Link and Pikachu- along with Pikachu, Link, Ganondorf and Shiek. I also began to get better at the game, learning about how to properly do tilt attacks, as I originally thought only Ganondorf had tilts, namely his Up tilt which was featured in so many Event 50 guides on youtube. I never really got that good though, as it was Brawl that got me interested in the series properly.

Brawl is a fantastic game, and is my favourite game of the series, as I have people to play it with. I only had two controllers for the GC, and when I asked people what they wanted to play, it was either Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, or Double Dash!! Multiplayer always makes a game more fun, unless you're playing Galaxy with someone who makes you jump constantly XD. Also, the game had a decent online mode. It wasn't brilliant, but it got the job done, and it was also my first online game. I unlocked all characters and stages in a matter of days, the process being far easier this time around. I loved most of the new characters, but I began feeling that Luigi and Jigglypuff weren't as good, especially Jigglypuff, so I stopped using her as much. Marth was much more manageable for me now due to the slower speed of the game, so I used him more and more. I felt that Pikachu had gone worse in this game, due to his quick attack needing more precision to control now- something I still have trouble with. I also started messing about with Wolf and Wario, who I liked playing as, but weren't that good with. At the time of getting it, I thought MK was worthless, along with Dedede, so they were characters who I never really touched until much later. As I joined Smash Boards I got more knowledgeable about the game, and the guides here helped me out a lot to know all the technical terms and stuff. This helped me improve my Marth, and made me get much better with my Falco, who although not my main, is easily my best character. Of course I loved playing as Pokemon Trainer (Ivysaur), Sonic and Snake, but I'm not really that good with them, but I am improving. With Brawl I enjoy playing as a majority of the characters, but I can only really play a few really good. These past few weeks I'm struggling with Marth a bit, as I now prefer his Melee self a whole lot more, and am getting better with Yoshi, Olimar, and King Dedede, characters who I thought I would never get used to.

All this Brawl made me want to read up about Melee again, and fully complete all the remaining events, as well as increase my skill. I read up about terms such as SHFFL, wavedashing and L-cancelling, and began to practice these. Whilst Melee seemed impossibly fast now due to playing Brawl for so long, I suddenly found myself playing it better than I did the months before getting Brawl. It was then I realized that this was the game that, in my eyes, had the better gameplay. Sure, I didn't really like using the Gamecube controller, but it is much more comfortable on Melee than Brawl, as Brawl requires you to press the R button in fully to dodge roll, whereas you only needed to tap it lightly on Melee. The nunchuck control scheme fitted me perfectly for Brawl. I can use the GC now, but the nunchuck is so much more comfortable and easy to use for me, and this made Brawl much more playable. Even though Melee has better gameplay in my opinion, Brawl is the most complete package, and that is what keeps me coming to it again and again.

That said, I may possibly have a go on Melee after, or I may train with Falco on Brawl.

Finally, if this thread has been closed by the time I have wrote this I will cry. For a few days/weeks .

I'm really happy that Melee's in the lead

It makes me realize that this time I spent in it however late I am, was not a waste of my time :)

I started smash after an end of season fencing party. I had played 64 a little bit but not much. Someone brought melee and he was really good (not actually competitive, but knew some advanced stuff and disliked items etc.). I got inspired

I started to look up how to play melee on the internet and found Wak (mad props) 's advanced how to play. It was so cool; I went out to the store and bought melee to play on my Wii.

Brawl started out ok, but then it got boring fast, whereas melee still had areas that I had not yet explored.

My favorite out of the trio is pretty much Brawl. I was around for 64 and Melee but I was ignorant of competitive play so I've been playing casually for mostly for fun most of the time. In Brawl was when I started to be competitive even my friends always whine to me about how Brawl has zero competitive value. I just ignore him. I was used to Melee physics and mechanics so the transition to Brawl was a bit difficult. I started getting the hang of it after getting my butt whooped by Level 9 CPU opponents. I swear... Never again. Again that was before I started adapting. I like Brawl mostly because its more of a challenge to me. In Melee and 64 you basically did a string of almost unavoidable combos and won. That... Seemed pretty... It was a gigantic turn-off to tell you the truth. Before I start rambling I'll end my post.

This is dead wrong for Melee.

Anyways, I play Melee because while 64 is great due to its silly brokenness with all the awesome combos and super fast aerials, I just enjoy all the options that were added to Melee. You can do so much in Melee that it BLOWS MY MIND. Brawl and 64 just don't offer the options Melee does.

Melee >> 64 > Brawl

i voted 64 b/c its the only smash game which i can go and play with my friends from high school who are not great at the newer ones. plus its the only one i never took seriously which keeps it as a game and kept it from becoming work in any way. trying to get tourney able for the other two have taken work and stressed me out but 64 is just pure fun for me. plus its kinda ridiculous in many ways which just makes me love it more. it may not be the best made smash but thats what makes it so fun

well i heard or smash 64 back then but i thought it was just another spin off mario-based party games, so i've never seen it before. this also applies for melee, except i did not even know about melee at all.

I started playing smash with Brawl first.I find myself playing that game because The explosions of characters flying out of the screen looked hype. I was strongly against brawl initially, because the people i seen playing it were doing brainless button mashing which didn't look exciting. Once I learned about the "competitive" side of smash, I was very much taken by it. Months later, after hearing about how so much better melee was, I tried it out and 64 as well. I so far don't like the previous smash titles, simply because brawl's graphics outdo the predecessors. Obviously it will, but think about this, I enjoy a clear graphic game, and then i step into a game where the graphics arent as great. kinda hard to appreciate older games in this fashion. I'm sure if i had played melee before smash, i would be a melee favouring player as well.

I totally don't like melee or 64's graphics whatsoever, I personally would rather play a clean 2D game than play a 3D game that doesn't look as great.

The graphical difference between brawl and melee isn't THAT different.Mainly stage graphics.
