Who is the best teacher?

Who in your opinion is the best melee teacher? In other words who has an extensive knowledge of the game and is masterfully talented but also has the patience, the ability to explain complex gaming concepts and a willingness to help others? For example if BobJoeSmash is amazing at melee and his fox 4 stocks 3 out of the top 5 in the world but his tactic of teaching someone is to shout obscenities about someone's mother during a "learning" session and makes no attempt to help you improve... then they might not be a good candidate for "best teacher"

Just interested in hearing people's opinions on the subject, and it'd be nice for people to thank whoever "taught" them how to play if they feel so inclined. :)

Constantly getting wrecked, over and over again, is the best way to learn. Keeps you humble and hungry.

More seriously: KK, PP, Mow, Cactuar are the best to learn from, I've noticed.

If you're high level and you're trying to push for top level, it's probably Cactuar.

If you're top level and you're trying to win the arm's race between you and the other four, it's probably Cactuar.

If you're worse than that then it's probably character dependent. For Falco it's probably PP, for Fox it's probably Unknown or Lovage (when Lovage cared), for Sheik it's probably me, and for everything else there's MasterCactuar (S2J, Fly, Wobbles, Cactuar, and various others are pretty good in my experience with them). Mow is good for most low tiers AFAIK. Alternatively, you can probably just get experience and talk about it and that usually works well too.

edit:

Honorable mentions include:

* M2K if all you need to learn is punishment or every character's b-throw game and you can extrapolate the relevant information from his epic one-liners

* Shroomed for explicitly telling you that what he's doing with his grabs is often wildly sub-optimal and that CGing is probably better but gay

* Mango is great but good luck getting him to talk about the game if he doesn't know you

David is a pretty good teacher.

He offers some good extra credit :smirk:

you probably want to hit up me (max), kirbykaze (david), cactuar (charles), or dr peepee (kevin). we have varying accessibility or willingness to help and we largely teach the same flavor of material. after that, we also each have our nuances. it's not that we're in disagreement so much as we just find slightly different stuff interesting.

strict hard fundamentals: me and charles
deviation and experimentation: david and kevin

nicer to new kids: me and kevin
prefers some prior knowledge: charles and david

focus on in-game interactivity: me and david
focus on extraneous factors: charles and kevin

realistically, if you're serious about this game and competition, you're best consulting all four of us and joining our little note-trading circle. it's not like smashers are hard to talk to, you can just freely contact us. you're best off ignoring character polarity at first, because it takes a long time for that to affect your progress in any meaningful way.

there's a handful of other people that can teach effectively too, but i don't think they're as well-known or vocal. that's not to say that they are good or bad, simply unknown to me.

I focus on extraneous factors a lot. We just never talk about them because I prefer discussing them with Cactus and Kevin 'cuz, as you have stated, you're all about the hard mechanics and I like framing our discussions on those terms.

it's worth noting that even though i play brawl, sufficiently understanding player psychology/fundamental concepts allows me to have fruitful discussion and learn a lot from charles and kevin.

so your base of "melee knowledge" doesn't have to be incredibly great, you just have to be able and willing to improve your interpretation and application of things.

Smash is many times a very hard game to understand and actually teach that's why it is so important how you choose your words when you teach someone.

You also have to be patient and be ready to say/do the same things a few more times if the player don't understand or actually give him the chance to preform what he wanna learn.

Cactuar has all of those things and much more so I think he is the best

You heard it from Armada folks

If Cactuar comes home to your daughter and wants to put a ring on it

But they're full of stamina!

I haven't had a 'session' with either, but I've asked questions on the boards and KK's and PP's posts are the ones that give an in depth answer with theory and practicality behind it, reasons as to why it is the answer and usually some follow up thought - what/why you or the opponent do(es) next, how it relates to the current metagame, or a question to answer for myself so that it suits my gameplay and game plan.

Cactuar is best

kk my gf taught me what OTP means and LMAOOOO <333

I don't think I'm a best teacher for anything besides Falco probably(and maybe not even then *shrug). I do like to think I can help pretty much anyone by talking to them though. =)

Cactuar. I thought I knew what game I was playing until I started talking to him on AIM. Then I realised I was just another guy muddling my way thru. I still am but at least now I know I am...
