top 16 of nationals should all be best of 5 sets

National tournaments, maybe even big regionals should make all sets best out of 5 in the top 16

It is a tragedy to see top calibur players only play a best of 3 set. Not only is it great for the spectators, but it gives more time for players to adapt and beat their opponent.


What do you guys think? I honestly wish I could seen 5 matches in memorable sets such as these:

Over vs M2k
Armada vs M2k (pound )


I don't see time being a problem, the big nationals lately play both melee and brawl and I think melee would still finish way before brawl is done

Top 16 might be overkill, but I completely agree that best of 5 should be extended way past just WF/LF/GF at nationals. At the very very least, both Winner's Semis and Loser's Semis need to be best of 5, always. As it stands, 3 games is not enough time to adapt, and even if it is there is still too much weight placed on the first game due to only one chance at defeating an opponent on their CP.

after talking to Armada @ apex..i really think it should be top 32..at apex..we had so much extra time on day 3 so i dont see time being an issue if its a national and at big regionals like to6/g2g 2/etc it should be top 16

I think top 12 would a better category because that includes everything from winners quarters and onward. top 16 is weird cuz it'd start at the round right before the people who lost in winners quarters play in losers.

Even those that are running on time (or as close to it a possible) are exhausting for all TOs and the staff involved. If I am totally honest, as a TO, I just want the bracket finished by the end of a large tournament :s.

Maybe . Recent nationals though for melee finish pretty early. You might be right though

i didnt go to apex, but other nationals ive been to havent finished early

genesis technically did i guess, but thats because they did a huge compromise of one round of pools into a 126 person bracket right away and i would much rather have 2 rounds of pools than best of 5's for the top 16

pound 4 ran way, way behind schedule; it was supposed to be done sunday night but it didnt finish until like 4:30ish on monday

agree with eggm for sure. it's a nice way of showing who's really better because Bo3 doesn't always really show it, maybe the 3rd match that the person who won the set barely won and the person who lost could still win the set. some people get really clutch and all when the matches become more because like s2j said u see more of the adapting thing happening even in just 1-2 extra matches and all.

Bo5 is great for just spectators too, more vids, MORE VIDS haha.

Yeah Losers quarters should be best of 5 as well. I would have loved seeing more Axe vs Armada and Wobbles VS Dr Pee Pee. More than that I think they earned a best of 5 set.

I've always wondered how things like WSF and LSF were determined by something as slender as a bo3 match. I definitely agree about the top 16 (or at least top 12) being bo5. GF could even be bo7 and I don't think that would be unreasonable, especially if we're talking about thousands of dollars for the winner!
