Hello and welcome back to...

This Smash, however, is different than the ones we know. This is a full reboot of the beloved platform fighter franchise, with no necessity to follow its predecessors in terms of roster, tone, or... anything, really! Will our Smash follow in the footsteps of those that came before, or will we take the franchise in an entirely new direction? We shall find out!

General Guidelines
While this won't be a very strict thread in terms of what content will/won't be allowed, the following serves as a general guide on what to expect here.
  • Above all else, be respectful to your fellow users! Debate is welcome, but please keep it civil.
  • Please keep in mind that this is a Smash reboot. We are not attempting to create a direct followup to Ultimate or any other Smash game. While content from past Smash games is welcome, I encourage you to submit the characters/content YOU want, not just the ones you think would be most marketable.
  • Fourth-party content will not be allowed at any point. Exceptions may be made if a strong enough case is made, but expect this to be a very rare occurance, if it happens at all.
    • Multimedia content will be allowed in any form aside from fighters or stages. Everything else should be fair game.
  • The thread will be updated around noon EST daily for now. This may change in the future, however.

Our first day of jobs are pretty standard fare for platfighter creation threads, but no less important and exciting!

Job 1: Submit a Nintendo character for the roster!
Simple, but important - Please submit a character from the world of Nintendo to be a part of our playable lineup. It doesn't matter if they were in past Smash games, if they're new or old, iconic or obscure, or anything like that. The only requirement is that they must be owned by Nintendo. (Third-parties will be handled later on in the thread.)

Also note that Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Pikachu, and Inkling are already on the roster.

Job 2: Submit a base roster size!
I won't set a cap for this, but please try and be reasonable. I'm not opposed to an Ultimate-sized roster, but try to make that the absolute maximum.

Job 3: Submit a pitch for gameplay!
Simply put - How do you want this Smash to play? Do you want things such as wavedashing, Fraymakers-style assists, or things of the like? Feel free to pitch them! However, the bare minimum for this job will be a description of a fighter's moveset including specials.

Submissions will close tomorrow at noon. Happy submitting!

Job 1:
Fox McCloud (Star Fox)
1676045106708.png
Fox McCloud is a main protagonist of Nintendo's rail shooter Star Fox video game series and he is a leader of team star fox - a team consisting of 4 wingmen that fight evil galactic threats while flying their Arwings. He is an anthropomorphic Fox whose father died before the series' events in clutches of Andross and he needs to fight him to avenge his Father. He is also married with Krystal - the blue vixen from planet Cerinia and he has a son named Marcus McCloud.

Fox McCloud is one of Nintendo's most known characters and he isn't a stranger to crossovers as he appeared in Smash games (from 64 to Ultimate) and in other games aside smash. Heck, he even is considered as one of historical Nintendo characters due to it's series being a milestone that forced Nintendo to switch from 2D gaming to 3D gaming by SNES's use of FX chip that allows to render objects in 3D in various games.
Without Star Fox games, Nintendo wouldn't even possibly make Super Mario 64 due to not switching into 3D gaming (I mean, Nintendo sometimes makes 2D games, but still).

In terms of his moveset, some of his moves in his moveset would be changed to fit the theme of the game (Flying in his arwing or etc.) like switching his "Fire fox" attack for "Mini-arwing"-like flight or use Smart Bomb as new side special (assume that his old side special would be his new dash attack or something).
He would be still retain his playstyle, but with small nitpicks to fit the home franchise well.

I feel Fox should be included in the game due to massive impact that was caused by the release of it's first game in 3D on SNES, which it sparked Nintendo's interest in 3D gaming. Also his first 2 games (Star Fox SNES and Star Fox 64) were considered as greatest games of all time on Wikipedia.

Job 2:
I think the roster number should be 42; there are many Nintendo characters to choose from (heck, we could even put some characters that weren't in the game before).

Job 1: Donkey Kong

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well, he's fi - Ah, you know the rest. Seriously, though, it's not like anyone really needs an introduction to DK anyway - His 1981 debut (or rather his grandfather's) is what put Nintendo on the international map and kicked off their video game empire. Plus, I just really like Donkey Kong.

Job 2: 60 fighters
Just a little over Smash 4's count, but still very healthy for a fighting game (especially when you consider this doesn't account for DLC).

Job 3
I actually really like the Smash moveset structure since Brawl, so I'm willing to keep that. However, I'd also add Melee-style wavedashing, Ultimate's directional airdodges, and a strafe button.

Job 3:
I agree with FazDude that we could keep the current smash moveset structure, but I think we should also add 3 super moves to each character like in fighting games. If there are gonna be characters that it would hard to come up with 1 or 2 additional super moves, then we could be creative in order to come up with them.

We’re already representing most of Nintendo’s big names, but I think there’s one “top priority” franchise we don’t have on the starting cast. That’s why I’m proposing…
Isabelle

A character I could see being more or less ported from Ultimate, and honestly more interesting of a pick than the Villager IMO. She’s cute, she’s popular, and I liked her a lot in Ultimate. And since Animal Crossing is definitely one of Nintendo’s big games, I feel like she’s fitting.

Although at the very least an Animal Crossing stage is a necessity.

Job 1:Captain Falcon (F-Zero)

Captain Falcon is the main character of F-Zero series, he is a famous unknown racer and a bounty hunter. Captain Falcon always is a smash fighter on all 5 Smash games, his moveset would be the same from the smash games.

Job 2: 75 Fighters
i know is too much,but i think it's good

job 3: the gameplay is same from smash games, but the Final Smashes are active by a bar on the HUD (similar from Smash Crusade),wavedashing melee-like,four special moves (neutral, side,up and down),four normal attacks (jab, side,up and down), five aerial attacks (neutral, forward, backward,up and down),four throw attacks (forward, backward,up and down) and pummel, three taunts (up,side and down),custom battle intros and 10 alt costumes.

Job 1: Nintendo Character
R.O.B.
Gonna go with a classic, here. Everybody here knows this guy's story so I'm not really going to talk about it too much, but Retro representation is bound to happen and what better than the savior of the gaming industry?

Job 2: Roster Size
Go big or go home. 89.

Job 3: Gameplay Pitch
I see no reason to change what Smash already has officially, as far as movesets go. I would suggest being able to be lenient with what types of attacks can be had; Some of the most unique characters in Smash official has some very unconventional gimmicks and I'm hoping that carries over. Never improve upon perfection, y'know.
We can bring back wavedashing if you want, it makes no difference to me.

Fraymaker-Style assists would be interesting to see.
I also think seeing some major customizability in terms of costumes, taunts, entrance animations, kill animations etc. would be a blast to have. Similar to how Multiversus and PSAS allowed players to customize that, it's something I want to see in Smash. I've always wanted to see more model swaps in the game, mostly as the primary feature for changing costumes, and the same can go for the rest of what I mentioned.
I think character interactions could also be played up a bit more, since the general appeal of Smash is having all these gaming characters in one place.

Job 1: I’ll go with Marth, who is the original protagonist of my favorite Nintendo series Fire Emblem. Also, he plays an important role in the most recent entry Engage.

1629241234916.png
Job 2: This is from scratch, so assets won’t really be used, but I’ll go with 50 as a compromise between wanting a big roster and having to deal wih limitations with restarting from scratch.

Job 3: Maybe back inputs or shield specials. I’ve liked the overall series gameplay along with SSF2 and Crusade, so I don’t see too much to improve on in this department.

My gameplay pitch: Basically Melee, but with statuses (like burial, freezing, e.t.c.) and without L-Cancelling. Hitstun leans slightly closer to Smash 64. Airdashing and smash airs with a devoted Smash Attack button. No gimmicks, no more compromises or middle grounds.

Nintendo fighter: Yuka (Rhythm Heaven)

Just throwing it out there - While I'm not opposed to us starting discussion about alts right now, there will be an alt-related job where we'll be officially deciding how to handle them.

Character interactions are also a little outside of the scope of what I was intending for this job, but there will likely be a job pertaining to those due to their relative popularity.

Job #01:
Character Name: Dr. Kawashima
Character Origin: Brain Age: Train Your Brain In Minutes A Day! (2005)

I feel like a reboot roster of this type needs to take into account a few things: and whilst I don't typically take much stock in the "representation" argument, I think some of Nintendo's more casual libraries should be present in some way or another. So, how about we go with someone who's been relevant for close to 20 years, whilst still existing on modern platforms to this very day, and all-the-while representing the surprisingly important Touch! Generations line?

Dr. Kawashima, whilst not playable in the mainline Smash series, would be a perfect way to fit the bill here. Filling in Wii Fit Trainer's role as an unorthodox and slightly weird character who moreso pays homage to the source material as opposed to directly pulling from it, Kawashima feels like he could be a particularly strange and eyebrow-raising inclusion that makes some sense in the grand scheme of things. Also, it doesn't hurt that the Brain Age series is active to this day!

I also think Kawashima's inclusion would be a great way for us to see more of Nintendo's casual library get represented in unique and more prominent ways - and perhaps it'd be possible for us to see music from interesting series such as Clubhouse Games, Art Academy, Nintendogs, the Wii series and plenty of others.

Job #02:
I think a potentially reasonable roster size could be 40, slightly more than Brawl's roster. Considering the potential for some new faces to replace the old, as well as a number of characters that make sense to return, all having the theoretical potential to be completely reinvented from the ground up - I think this would be a good middle-ground between the larger rosters of the later games and the more focused feel of some of the earlier ones.

Job #03:
As suggested by several other users, the basic framework of the Smash series' gameplay is simple enough to be approachable, but has enough complexity to be fun. I'd suggest it would feel like a middle ground between Melee's complexity and Ultimate's accessibility, ensuring the game can appeal to the widest possible audience and could have a little something for everyone.

I think, as PinkFlare PinkFlare suggested, assists in a similar form to that of Fraymakers would be a really interesting concept. I don't really know if they'd overcomplicate the game too much, though. I do still think keeping Smash as a party game first, fighting game second, is a solid way of doing things - and Assist Trophies as they currently exist do provide a good amount of chaos across the stage.

One thing I will say with a bit of veracity is that the game shouldn't have overly mechanically complex movesets. Whilst I'd like to go full-on and say that it'd be ideal to reinvent characters to work in the framework of the game (as opposed to the opposite, as it currently works), it'd inevitably mean that some mechanics - such as command inputs, overly complicated meters, and so forth - wouldn't be included. Whilst I'm not against a couple of characters having unique UI elements of their own, I think that it'd be against the spirit of the game itself to stuff overly verbose and complicated concepts into half of the roster.

Duck Hunt

Easily one of Nintendo’s most well known retro characters and he comes from one of the best selling NES games of all time so it makes sense to add him. Wether we make it a duo whose technically a trio like smash or do something else, we can decide. Might as well start the “god I hate the dog from duck hunt” discourse early.

For roster size I’ll submit 27.

Job 1: Ness (EarthBound)

Ness would represent SNES-era JRPGs, and the guy's a Smash 64 veteran. Plus, I think he has more of a shot than Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff do. Don't judge me on the former, though.

Job 2: 35 Characters
A bit small, but we're talking about a rebooted Smash roster. At least some focus should be put into reworking old movesets.

Job 3: More Casual Gameplay
I think the gameplay for this reboot should have a slightly more casual-leaning edge. I'd keep the ability to literally gain the higher ground, the Smash Ball, etc. But I'd try to limit the gimmicks and even allow some creative liberties in the move pool once in a while.

In other words, I want a combination of Smash 64 and Brawl in terms of playability.

Sukapon

Urban Champion comes from a game that's pretty widely hated, and Little Mac is already in Smash, so let's go for Nintendo's other other fighting game. Joy Mech Fight is an extremely impressive NES game where you control Sukapon, a robot who must defeat seven of his counterparts who are being used by an evil scientist to take over the world. In Smash From Scratch, Sukapon would be a unique cross between an aggressive zoner (as he will lose parts of his body when throwing projectiles) and a grappler.

Also, I propose the gameplay be a tag-team platfighter, mainly because I wanna play Sentinels Inc already, damn it!

For assists, head on over to this StrawPoll:

Phew... that's a lot of voting. We're not done yet, though - We've got some jobs to do today, but due to the length of this post, those will be in a post that'll be out shortly. Feel free to start voting in the meantime!

Job 4: Submit a Nintendo stage!
Please submit a stage from the world of Nintendo, alongside an image to represent it. Feel free to go into detail about your stage's layouts, hazards, cameos - Anything you feel is important! Porting over stages from past Smash games is also okay.

In addition, please include one to eight music tracks for your stage. Remixes from past Smash games/fan remixes are welcome!

Job 5: Submit a template for alternate colors/costumes!
Please describe how you want alternate colors and costumes to be handled in this thread. Think eight slots per character is reasonable? Want less/more? Should alternate costumes be seperate slots ala Street Fighter V? Have some other idea? Let us hear it!

These jobs, alongside voting, will close tomorrow at noon. Happy submitting!

Nintendo stage: Mushroom Kingdom

This stage is based specifically on NSMBW, it's layout is quite close to Yoshi's Story from Melee, being a Final Destination-style stage with slopes, and pipes that come out of the sides of the platform at periodic points to recover on. With items on, ? Blocks will appear that items will come out of. Both pipes come out at once, you can identify when they're out from the Koopa Troopas in the background dancing.

Songs
  1. NSMB Overworld (Brawl)
  2. Overworld (Melee)
  3. Overworld (64)
  4. Mario 3 (Melee)
  5. SMW Medley (Wii U)
  6. Bob-Omb Battlefield
  7. Super Bell Hill
  8. Baby Park

Didn't realise the existing Smash remixes were elegible, so I'll modify my list to account for that

Alivel Mall (Kirby Series)
Located in the ruins of an abandoned shopping mall, our fighters battle on the ground and second floors with enemies roaming around as well conveyer belts included. At some point, Goromondo drops down from above as a stage hazard attacking the fighters with his huge fists and boulders raining down and the spinning attack, it's optional to defeat him.

Green Greens

Green Greens is one of locations from Kirby games and it's a green plain that locates on Planet Popstar - the planet where Kirby lives.

Green Greens is one of iconic Kirby places that appeared in many games (even under different names).

The layout of the stage would be like Dreamland from SSB64, but two platforms hanging above the main ground platform.

Whispy woods would act as stage hazard like in older smash games where he has to blow off the fighters.

Also the background of the stage is taken Kirby Super Star Ultra but with more realistic graphics/visuals akin to Star Allies.

It also has cameos of various Kirby characters and enemies waddling in background.

Songs:
1.Green Greens - Kirby's Dream Land (Gameboy)
2. Title theme - Kirby's Adventure (NES)
3.Gourmet Race - Kirby Super Star (Smash 64 remix)
4. Grassland - Kirby's Dream land 2 (GB)
5. Grassland 1 - Kirby's Dream land 3 (SNES)
6. Title theme/Cookie Country - Kirby's return to dreamland (Wii)
7. Friendly field - Kirby Star Allies (Switch)
8. Main theme - Kirby and Forgotten Land

Job #4: Tetris

As far as Smash stages are concerned, this is one of the most requested. And quite frankly, for very good reasons!

Music List:
Tetris: Type A
Tetris: Type B
Tetris: Type C
Famicom Medley
Title Theme - NES Remix 2
Saturday Supercade Theme (Because I can.)

Job #5: Alternate Colors and Costumes
I would have eight slots in total, with a case-by-case basis on the colors and costumes themselves. For example, if there are more than four costume ideas, then we can make less recolors to make up for that.

1. Donkey Kong. Despite the big gorilla not having had much action since 2018 (or, well, 2014 if you want to be particular about it), he nonetheless feels like a logical and obvious inclusion to the series so long as we get the opportunity to reinvent him. There are very few characters you can say have been Nintendo mainstays since their early days, and DK's one of them.
2. Isabelle. I feel like Animal Crossing is a big and pretty damn important series to represent somewhere here, and with Isabelle having somewhat taken over the role of the series' primary iconic character over the Villager, she makes a lot of sense to include. I'm not sure whether we'd want to take her moveset in more of an "Isabelle" direction or an "Animal Crossing rep" direction, though. I suppose it depends, somewhat.
3. Yoshi. Whilst Yoshi as a series has recently been viewed with... less than positive reception, I think the character still makes sense to keep around. Yoshi's iconic, unique, and reasonably approachable - even if he feels like less of a "WOAHHHHH HOLY CRAP" inclusion than some others. I do want to make it clear, though, I'm not just including Yoshi because of the "original 12" argument. I'm including him because he has potential, a series of his own, and some history.
4. Yuka. I think a Rhythm Heaven character feels like a really solid inclusion, and Yuka's in a good spot to represent a wide variety of aspects and scenarios from the series without having to fall into a singular role (such as Karate Joe's natural "fighty man" archetype) whilst also being a solid rhythm rep too! The only potential problem I'd bring up is that there hasn't been a Rhythm Heaven game since 2015... but she's still cool enough to make the list in my opinion.
5. Olimar. With the upcoming Pikmin 4 on the horizon, plus being overall a solid "reasonably recent" rep for some of Nintendo's work so as not to have all of this roster end up full of older picks, Olimar feels like he'd be an interesting pick that'd give the roster a fresh feel. Depending on how we take him, though, I think it might be a good idea to look at his moveset and see if it might be worth changing how he uses Pikmin. (Though, that's just me.)
6. Fox. Whilst the Star Fox series hasn't had much in the way of content as of recent, I think Fox himself is an interesting case given his nature as a somewhat iconic character within the bounds of Smash specifically. Even aside from that, there's potential in keeping him around, and I don't think he'd be a wasted slot by any means.

I have to say, though: plenty of awesome submissions here, truly. Almost all of them were considered at one point or another.

1. 42.
2. 45.
3. 35.

I feel like over-filling our reboot roster isn't a great idea, though that's just me. A middle-of-the-road approach in terms of roster would give us space to make our fighters all feel unique, whilst making sure we can trim the fat and ensure there's not too much in certain places.

1. FazDude. Combination of simplicity and complexity? Niiiice
2. WaWaWa. I think the status concept is a lot of fun, and honestly it brings a whole new element to the table that could be really interesting to experiment with.
3. Sock-On-Rye. I think a movement toward simplicity might genuinely do the roster good and prevent overcomplication, though that's just me. (We should still keep side specials though!)

Job #04:
Stage Name: Rainbow Road
Stage Origin: Mario Kart 64/Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

How do I represent the best-selling Switch game, an iconic and long-lasting Nintendo series, and one with over a hundred locations to choose from? My answer is simple: with the best-recieved and one of the most beloved tracks from the Mario Kart series, and conveniently one that featured in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In this case, you wouldn't actually fight on the road: rather, you'd fight on the train, which would fly around the stage and roughly follow it. The stage itself would thus feel a lot fairer without the oncoming vehicle gimmick from Port Town Aero Loop, and feels more... fun overall. Oh, and 12 characters can be selected to drive: all of them are from the Mario series and have featured in at least one Mario Kart game, but wouldn't be the same as any character on the stage. (For instance, if you're playing as Mario, he wouldn't be a driver: but Luigi might be!)

As for musical tracks, I've got a few in mind here. I want to go for mostly thematically fitting stuff, but I also don't want everything to just be Rainbow Road tracks, so here goes nothing!
  1. Rainbow Road N64 (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) - Technically a remix? It's your default track.
  2. Rainbow Road (Mario Kart 64) - Gamerip. Felt necessary.
  3. Rainbow Road (Super Mario Kart) - Gamerip. I swear to god I'm keeping these to a minimum
  4. Sky Garden (Mario Kart: Super Circuit) - Gamerip. This felt really fitting, if I'm honest.
  5. Waluigi Pinball (Mario Kart DS) - Gamerip. Everyone seems to love this one? I'm not using the remix, though. Sorry.
  6. Coconut Mall (Mario Kart Wii) - Gamerip. I know it doesn't really fit, but I know I'd have to look behind me wherever I went if it wasn't here
  7. Neo Bowser City (Mario Kart 7) - Gamerip. It's pretty fitting, and I felt 7 needed a rep of some kind.
  8. Vancouver Velocity (Mario Kart Tour) - Gamerip. Hated in its time, but still an important game (with some good music!)
Job #05: I think that the 8-costume rule works fine as is. There's a lot of potential to explore and expand within that framework alone: the Olimar/Alph situation is a good example of this. Putting the potential of the framework to use would be a good idea to expand our content without too much development work - plus, I think adding more runs the risk of certain characters' alts losing all relevancy. (Look back to Little Mac's 16 costumes in Sm4sh if you want an example of how that looks.) However, I'd also like to say we should limit the maximum number of model swaps to three (with four total models, a bit like Hero) except in circumstances where all eight of the costumes should be model swaps (like Bowser Jr.) It just keeps things more... fair and logical.

In an ideal world, I'd love to have the option to select "regions" and then use a colour wheel to change them as necessary so that recolours are easy - however, doing that simply overcomplicates things, and kind of takes away from adding default colour schemes in the first place, so I don't think this would be worth it.

Sorry for sending whilst unfinished! I accidentally pressed the enter button and something else, I think shift? Happens more often than I'd like to admit...

Tetris isn't a Nintendo-owned game, so it's not allowed for this job.
