Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Clearly Sakurai has decided this is the game to cater to reptile fetishes. Expect more to come.
On that note, can we appreciate how K. Rool, Bowser and Yoshi are all currently lined up in a row on the main mural artwork?

Nothing really. I'm arguing that it would be a better choice because it would easier for the developers to make.
Well, it's likely that the developers actually enjoy making them and really like the idea, regardless of how practical or not it is.

So how do you guys feel about this potential supposed story mode concept for Spirits?

Hades being an recurring antagonist which would be fitting due to his soul-devouring nature and one of the masterminds behind the story. My idea could be that he ends up recruiting villains like Bowser, Bowser Jr., Dark Samus, Ganondorf, King K. Rool and Ridley in collecting spirits as well as mercenaries like Wario and Wolf.

Being that Sakurai was behind Uprising. I'd be surprised if this wasn't the case.
Seems neat, though there does need to be a reason for the guy to come back to life.

For me personally, Terry Bogard, Geese, Yoshimitsu, Chun-Li, and Nightmare would be pretty hype. Any one of those would make a lot of people happy.
But one that would be a complete pipe dream but would be my absolute personal and favorite choice:
Morrigan Aensland.
I mean Zero is already an AT, so just throw her in to represent Capcom crossovers as she's seen as a face of Capcom itself along Ryu, Chun-Li, and Mega Man. She's kinda far removed from Darkstalkers itself nowadays, so I think she'd be great as a "company rep".
please sakurai I'm begging you
She and Falcon could sympathize over how their franchises have been left in the dust.

One's an character owned by Nintendo who was frequently requested over the years, the other is one that barely had any history with them. Do the math and fite me. :p
That math is correct.
What you're forgetting is that this is the Senior Superlatives, and "Most Likely to have a big...sword" is Clouds claim to fame.

The Smash discussions have been derailed by Pokemon.

If you gotta go off-topic, at least its an equally great topic.

I think Let's Go is GF's attempt to truly annualize Pokémon. For example, imagine LGPE this year, gen VIII next year, Let's Go 2 2020, Remake for 2021, and so on. The two series (in theory at least) won't cannibalize each other like other Pokemon games have, and allow consistently high sales every year. Whether or not it works is yet to be seen of course

each gym will have requirements you must meet before entering.
in Brock's gym you can't enter without having a Pokemon super-effective to his rock types.
Not that I think the games will be bad (I'll probably try them at some point) but wow. GF really doesn't have confidence in players nowadays, do they? Even children could figure out "I should probably bring something to beat up Rock types" if you give them enough hints...

Okay...umm...I actually might pass now, I dunno...I'll temper my feelings, wait til I know everything in this game. Because that little detail, really irks me.

Like, these little nitpicks do add up, and it feels like every little new thing I hear, sours me. Where's/when's the interesting, good details about this game? Is this true? Was it in a trailer?

It is true that pokemon has never been hard, but that's why they shouldn't have made it easier.
You can't enter Brock's gym without a grass or water type, that's an issue.
That's a shame! I always ditch my starter as soon as i catch Nidoran... i prefer double kicking my way through all those Geodouches.

mk aint happening. japanese players basically hate that franchise. chun-li is a good choice but id expect dlc. terry bogard is a who to most people here. and fulgore is a huge 90s character but with Microsoft having him now doubt he has a chance.
100% agree, barring Terry Bogard. He is most defs not a 'who' to most people here.

Okay, so other than Heihachi, what other fighting game characters would excite many people?
Outside what Chrono. Chrono. said, Terry Bogard is up there, especially after the "Terri" Bogard reveal in SNK Heroines gained some publicity. Scorpion or Sub Zero would be up there, at least for the American audience, Fulgore for KI (again, hype for the American audience), Yoshimitsu for Tekken or Soul Calibur, Morrigan for Darkstalkers and fan service. Blazblue has gotten a little bit of more clout because of Cross Tag, so the chance that series gets a rep is non-zero imo.

Pikachu and Eevee learn Double Kick naturally this time for that reason so there's that.

That's really dumb, and defeats the entire appeal of Pokemon, which is freedom to pick and choose your team composition before doing anything of consequence, aka battles.

What makes it worse is that your starter Pikachu/Eevee learns double-kick specifically to deal with rock types.
They could have left it at that, but nope. gotta make it so the kids can't lose.

And to be fair I don't think the games will be bad, just really bland and kind of annoying.

It's on the website, and the E3 presentation.

I have not played Yellow in a decade, so I cant remember specifically, but do you get one of the non-Pikachu starters before Brocks gym? Because to me, it seems more like GF trying to give a hint like , "Hey, dont forget to pick up this Pokemon!". If all the starters show up after the gym, then I don't know, but I don't really mind a minor thing like that so long as the game is still fun to play. :p

Varies on your definition of poor. Crystal is the worst selling to date at 6.39 million though.
Let's Go is going to be sucessful.
If we dont get sequels Id be quite shocked.
I'm almost excpecting a "Let's Go Meowth." Would be great if we could play as Team Rocket. Though that wont happen.
I expect Lets Go versions of every generation. And maybe even DLC for them. Maybe that is where we will get a Meowth version.

So I guess we’ll know more about that direct in about...10 hours from now or so? If nothing then we won’t get it this week. Next week, probably.

Welp, time to make use of those 10 hours and go to bed. Night everybody

Pokemon has always been an easy ride except for a few optional battles in the post-game to be fair, but that Brock gym requirement is quite frankly absurd and soon they'll be removing any sort of challenge these games barely have to begin with...

But they know the series will sell like hot cakes either way so why care about demand or criticism?

Implying that my boi is a villain?

If that's the case, there's no hope for any of you. Have you seen Yoshi's celebration scene in Mario Power Tennis?

Yoshi may not be a villain yet, but all those Yoshi sacrifice levels in Mario Maker must be taking a toll on him.....don't be surprised if he turns

it's unfortunate that my opinion to the pokemon games are not good enough to warrant a purchase. Guess i'll wait for gen 8.

if gamefreak were to release lets go paras i would unironically be all for the game though lol

I never thought of Meowth before, but I could see that. I definitely agree with what you're saying here.

If I may inquire, roughly speaking, how much do you think Let's Go will sell?

I don't necessarily agree with your complaints at all, but I guess I get them. But dang, having a full remake of Yellow that looks fantastic is not even close to what I'd call zero content.
I have my doubts about Let's Go, but if it's a definitively better version of Pokemon Yellow I'll buy it.
Well, it's likely that the developers actually enjoy making them and really like the idea, regardless of how practical or not it is.
Maybe HAL enjoyed making trophies in Melee and Brawl and that's why they were included, but Smash 4 was developed by Namco Bandai and the main reason for including trophies in that game was probably just because they were in the previous games.

I really think the differences between Nintendo's two big holiday games are pretty funny.

SUPER SMASH BROS ULTIMATE: EVERYTHING IS HERE! You want Ridley? You want K Rool? Here you go! This time i'm listening to the fans!

LET'S GO PIKACHU AND EEVEE: NOTHING IS HERE! Only Kanto Pokemon. No wild battles. No breeding. Decreased difficulty. Increased hand holding to the point of absurdity.
Basically ignoring every fan request except for following Pokemon and Pokemon dress up.
Who cares about the people who've bought all our games and played for years, we've gotta get that sweet sweet Pokemon Go money!

About as much as your Yellow/Crystal/Emerald/BW2/USUM, you know, special "director cut" versions. About as much as them.

Hey, guys, I'm having a little bit of trouble. I've got some personal issues that are destroying my optimism, and I'm finding it harder to be excited for games in the future, Smash included.

Can someone just say some words of kindess to me, please? Or even link me something wholesome? I'm hardly feeling the way I used to these days.

I'm not who you asked, but i'll answer anyway.

I think it'll sell well, maybe a little under usual main series sales. So around 10-12 million as opposed to 15 million.
This is due to the fact that the Switch's install base isn't that ginormous yet.
Also, how many people do you think will go from a free phone app to a 300 dollar console with a 60 dollar game and a 50 dollar controller?
many, sure. But not all of them.

But...but..but...... :(

I'd cut Ridley and K Rool if I had to to keep trophies, and they were my most wanted newcomers.
Shhh! Don't let Sakurai hear you! I've waited too long for Ridley and to be honest, though I see him on the website and have seen videos of other people playing as him, I won't believe it 100% until I play in December...

Kidding. I love trophies too and I hope they're still in. But I wouldn't trade Ridley for anything. <3

They should learn like we all have... by getting their *** kicked at least a few times :p
Pokemon Let's Gold! & Silver Maril & Togepi Versions

Whitney's Miltank is replaced with a Cleffa
The three Legendary Beast literally come to you
When you get to the Day-Care, there's already a Perfect IV Ditto there waiting for you
Your rival/Silver in this game is literally your cheerleader

On a related note to that first fact, I have never had problems with Whitney's Miltank...

Honestly, the idea of Pokémon LGPE isn't bad. The idea was to invite newer players to the series.

But how they're handling it is just... Bad. I mean when your excuse to changing the catching system is because its "deemed too difficult", that's when the idea is lost.

Don't even get me started on Mew's exclusiveness in-games. -_-

To keep this Smash related: Blaziken as a Falcon Echo would be pretty dope and would at least kinda make sense, RIP F-Zero fans though.

As a former Pokémon: Crystal Version speedrunner, I think I speak for the community when I say the Clefairy’s metronome is more of a problem than the Miltank.

As for Super Smash Bros., it would have been cool for Gym Leaders to appear on the Pokémon Stadium stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Oh well.

I think there was a few instances in previous pokemon games where characters would give you reccomendations on Pokemon to catch. I think in B2/W2 there was an NPC who told you where to catch a Riolu if you wanted one for the normal gym. Why couldn't they do something like that?

Probably because the "casual millenial/zoomer smartphone audience doesn't have the attention span to talk to NPCs".

I wonder if they've noticed the backlash and then they just throw in a 'handholding on/off' switch.

Also, I didn't see if they required that you need to use a grass/water type, or simply have one in your party. And then are they going to give other challenges in the other gyms, or will they all be "where's your ground type? This is Surge's gym!"

And hopefully Blue is still Blue. I'm over these 'we can't have rivals, now they're your BFF'

But I am really looking forward to seeing the trainers in battle as well. I didn't play Sun/Moon at all, and I really have missed following mons since HG/SS.

Oh, and Smash...uhh...are we expecting any new Pokémon remixes?
