  • Are you watching GOML? We have three Links in top 96 (Orange, Izaw, MuthaDrum) right now. I checked the bracket, and MuthaDrum literally won 6 straight sets from losers round 2 to make it there.

Unfortunately i've missed it, i was away for a few days. Cool to know that we had some Link mains making it that far.

Well, Melee is on right now, and Hbox is already out at 5th, courtesy of Leffen and Wizzrobe.

As for Ultimate, Leo is in losers top 8 due to Marss, and ESAM actually made top 8 against the odds this time. Do you need the stream?

Nice, thx for the update mate! I won't have time to watch it live but thx for the offer (i have things to take care of), i'll probably watch the highlights later tonight or tomorrow.
MkLeo just lost in pools. In fact, a lot of upsets occurred. KEN is in losers too...

I still feel really bad about that set. He got pinappled game 2 trying to bomb recover, and he could have made it back. Just to clarify, he would have been guaranteed 13th at worst if he won...

I understand, sorry mate i didn't mean to 'rub salt in the wound'. I was just rewatching the set yesterday and the matchup thing just struck me.

Nonetheless, T a is very good player (and Link is a very good character with tons of potential). Some matchups are just really unbalanced imo, probably the reason why so many pro players have 2 or 3 mains.
    Iridium
    Iridium
I just felt upset at the loss, nothing more. But then again, he does have his YL (although I have not seen him for some time) and Roy. Recently, he really only used Link most of the time.
Another long gap without anything, but how are things? Still waiting on that Switch, but I want focus on techniques I have not tried yet.

How long do you think it would take to get used to directional airdodges, perfect shields, wavebounces, and anything like that?
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
All right, thx for the info!

For Cloud, i'd say people who played a lot of For Glory in Smash 4 should have a decent knowledge of the matchup (there was a lot of Cloud back then iirc), just something to consider. The character i found the players to be the most unfamiliar with so far is Zelda, since she just got out of the gutter, it's almost like she's a brand new character. Just the Phantom alone seems to make people panic (lol) since they don't seem to know much about his range or his hitbox until they get hit a few times.

Okay, people may definitely know nothing when I choose Pit.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Haha! Yeah definitely, Pit is nowhere to be seen online. If you're looking for matchup unfamiliarity, i think you found the best candidate.
Just watched MSM 185 at 2GG, and it was even more random than I expected. T beat Shuton and WaDi, YB beat WaDi (for the third time in a row), ESAM, and Ally, and Tea also beat Ally.

In other words, Japan is having a good time.
Team Japan is doing really well right now at Prime Saga. All 6 players are still in winnners top 128 as of now, being guaranteed 33rd at the very least.

Yup, still here. I log in pretty much every day mainly to check if there's some interesting news. I've also been checking some character sub forums to learn more, i've recently been playing a lot of Mewtwo, Ridley and YLink (aside from Link, Dorf and Snake, my usual mains). I'm thinking about trying out Simon, Greninja and Mii Swordfighter next so i'm reading as much as i can about them.

Link is still my favorite boy tho. Speaking of which, i'm getting better, i rarely lose a match online with Link now.

(oh yeah, i've also been trying to complete Adventure of Link for the first time on the virtual console, i'm having a hard time. I'm at the point where Link learn to down-air :P i realized that blocking with the Hylian shield in Smash is inspired by the blocking mechanic in AoL)
    Iridium
    Iridium
Good to see. I feel a bit conflicted with who I should use alongside Link. Since I already used Greninja and Toon Link in Smash 4, those are my safe picks. Young Link would be quite new for me.

Actually, when I think about it, my Marth, Sonic, Lucario and Pit are pretty much developed in that regard too. After that, my remaining interesting probably go to Mewtwo, Simon/Richter, Roy, Shulk and Cloud. Or just everybody, as I will probably get to a point where I can play everybody well, even if I do not main many.

As for Zelda II, very good stuff. That reminds me of that Dark Link support thread. I never got to finishing that moveset...
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
I'd really want to get to the point where i can play every character too but there's a few i really don't like to play as like Olimar, K.Rool, Pichu/Pikachu, Villager/Isabelle.

I'm pretty sure you'll like YLink, he plays similarly to BotW Link (more than TLink imo) and his fire arrows are something. The only 'frustrating' aspect of YLink is his lack of kill confirms. Smash attacks kill but at a certain level of play people anticipate and shield/dodge them easily so you're almost forced to finish them with a combo (something into f-air, d-air or up-air). Fully charged fire arrows can kill but at like 200% or so (like they say ''if all else fails, use fire'' :P).
Anyone willing to trade me a Sandshrew (preferably Alolan but Kantonian would do fine)?

In return, i offer my eternal respect and a non-shiny Pokemon of your choice from the Let's Go Eevee version.
Honestly, I feel really bad for having to make you wait on me so we can practice, but my dad does not seem to know when to even go to the store, and school limits me a lot when it is not the weekend. Knowing that, I will still make sure to tell you when that good day finally happens.
After this Summit, I think it is clear that Leo is the best contender for best Ultimate player. Tweek is close, but Leo is more consistent, no?
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Absolutely. Especially if he sticks with Lucina like he said, his Ike is insanely good but had a few difficult matchups. Tweek is definitely close but i don't know, i have a feeling that top players are slowly adapting to Wario (Leo in particular). Leo really dominated Gluttony and he's one of the best Wario... i dunno maybe i'm jumping to conclusions. Anyways, Tweek has more tricks up his sleeve like a very impressive YLink (i hope he'll use him more in the future).

    I just like swords.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
I think Leo likes swords too :P I don't have a problem with swordmen in Smash but Link is the only sword wielder i play... aside from Ganon... I never really tried the Fire Emblem characters. I played Meta Knight a lil bit back in Brawl but i don't remember much.

Note: Roy and Lucina seem to be very popular picks online.
We haven't talked in a while. How are things going?
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Yeeeeeeeeeeeah! Thx a lot.

Hey btw, the Link video archive could use some new footage, i've dropped a few videos there a while ago but it's pretty dead since.

I'd put some time to update it myself but i'm putting my efforts in Snake's video archive for now.

Just saying in case you're interested in working on it.
I just have one more question. How does Link's double arrows interact with reflectors? This is something I haven't seen too much at all.

And happy birthday! Looks like I chose the right time to show up.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Thx !

Interesting question, i'll test the double arrows on the various reflectors and i'll get back to you on this later.

Something funny just happened, i was practicing my Ganondorf vs a cpu Dr. Mario, i Warlock punched him, he died and came back entirely pitch black (the bug you posted a few weeks ago). I know it's a bug but i prefer my headcanon: Ganondorf is so strong he can punch the light off you :P
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
I tested the double arrows on Fox, Falco, Wolf and Palutena's reflectors. The result is the same, since there's a small gap between the two arrows, the first one bounces on the reflector and comes back cancelling the second one. I've tried at various distances and it also happens.

Note: When you shoot an arrow on Fox's reflector while jumping (hitting the top part of the reflector), it bounces and disappears after a few frames instead of traveling the full distance back to Link (so i guess it's safer?). Also, the top of Wolf's reflector desintegrates the arrow instead of sending it back (so again, maybe jumping and shooting is safer on his reflector too?).

So, Link never gets hit? Interesting...
Looks like T actually streams now. Neat! Also, he will be going to a Sumabato that starts tomorrow (based on time zones). Want some links (heh, heh) to those?
When I made the thread, I was thinking Dark Link would work best as just as a sword wielder, being based specifically on Zelda II. Perhaps that would not make it an Echo Fighter as a result? Does that work?

Also, is it possible that you can help me think of a moveset sometime?
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
It's a very cool concept, i'm sure it could work. I can certainly think of some ideas for the moveset but i i'll need to refresh my memory of Zelda II first.

I love the idea of making him a unique more sword based Link. He could be a little faster than Link like he is in OoT? just an idea. It could compensate for the lack of projectiles. I'll take a look at his moves from Zelda II and i'll try my best to come up with some ideas to share.

Also if he doesn't use projectiles, i think he'd be considered a unique fighter or a clone (like the other Links).

I have a few ideas, i'll send you a PM
Are you French? I've been wondering that for a while.
    Iridium
    Iridium
I wouldn't mind some lessons right about now. It's kind of sad that I never really had any use for that language when I was about 8, so it got deleted from my memory.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
I like french because it's part of our history here in Québec but tbh i must say, learning to properly use this language is a pain. The french grammar has so many exceptions and overly specific rules (compared to english i mean). If you ever decide to take lessons i'll be glad to help you out. From what i know, french is not a very widespread langage in the world so it's a bit hard to use it on a daily basis (unless you live here in Québec, France, Belgium, Switzerland, or in one of the french speaking African or Caribbean countries)
    Iridium
    Iridium
Yeah, I'm always a fan of learning languages. Tried Italian and Japanese (might try again), but it couldn't hurt to try something familiar. I have tests to finish this week, and I'll be busy, so maybe later.
I think I have some more questions to ask.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
I'll test some things and i'll get back to you as soon as i can with the results. I have some minor things to take care of tonight so maybe it'll be late when i'm done testing.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Sorry for the delay, i can answer some of the questions (you probably already know but for reference: I'll measure distance in 'units'=the squares in trainning mode stage)

    3. How easily does Link's u-tilt hit in front? Looking at spacing and speed of the move as factors.
(i wrote the results from using Pichu as a hurtbox, note that u-tilt from the front and f-tilt hits 1 frame sooner on Bowser)

It can hit in front 11 frames after the input of the move.
Note: I compared it to f-tilt which hits 15 frames after the input. Also compared it to u-tilt from the back, it hits 7 frames after the input.

The maximum horizontal reach of the u-tilt in the front is ~0.7 stage unit (compared to f-tilt which reach a max of ~1.5 unit).

    4. Can Link land safer with d-air? As in, does he not lose out to certain moves with it as much?
I didn't notice any difference of priority with d-tilt so i would say no. The only noticeable difference with the move is that it's slightly easier to land the spike.

    5. (Training stage recommendation) How far does Link's arrows go when fully charged? Same applies to his FS.
Fully charged arrows reach ~26.5 units, uncharged reach ~5.4 units.

Rune arrows travel an impressive ~51.5 units so more than the total horizontal length of Final Destination/Battlefield from blast zone to blast zone (44.6 units).

An older question but i realised maybe you were talking about charging the arrows? (i thought you were talking about holding the arrow like an item)
    3. On SmashWiki, it's noted that arrows cannot be held indefinitely anymore. Is that true?
You can hold a charging arrow during ~3.5 seconds (around 215 frames) before it lauches automatically. It's fully charged at 50 frames so a little less than 1 sec.

I'll do some comparison later with Smash 4 for Link's size and the distance of up-B (just to be sure, you mean the aerial distance?).
    Iridium
    Iridium
For up-B distance, both is fine.
I honestly don't think I'll get the chance to play Ultimate for another week or so, so is it okay for me to ask some questions?
    Iridium

Just came by to mention how Rex, an apparent SoCal Link main, got 9th at SoCal Chronicles (512 entrants), while Arrow also got a respectable 33rd place finish. Salem is currently in top 48 at Smash Conference United (over 300 entrants, but stacked). Us Links are having it good so far with results.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Did you watch Salem vs HBox? That was close, Hbox won the 2nd game and almost 'clutchpuff' the last one, he seems comfortable with Ultimate.

    Here (just in case): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWszG-vh4xw

And btw, that's awesome to see that Links are performing well, i hope this will continue in the future. It's always good to see some high level Link gameplay.
    Iridium
    Iridium
I might watch the full thing when it gets uploaded to YT, but I did watch the last minute of it to know how it ended.
Having listened to your advice, I think I really do need to just cool down when something happens, because I do feel better now.
Look up Death's Scream Bloody Gore (the playlist) on YouTube, but on the Topic channel for the band, and tell me what you see for the thumbnail.
    Iridium
    Iridium
Like, when a move is used repeatedly and does less damage because of it.

    More info here: https://www.ssbwiki.com/Stale-move_negation

Items related to movesets, as far as what I saw in Smash 4, never became stale, and could refresh other moves, but I don't know if that applies to Link's bombs still.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Ok thx for the clarification, i'll test it and i'll be back later with the results. I'm also thinking about making a list of all fire based moves for the meta thread (and for the bomb thread). Could be useful to have the complete list of moves that can detonate the bomb instantly.

Anyway i'll take a break from character unlocks and lab a few things, i'll keep you posted.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Bombs don't stale (the throwing dmg, detonating dmg and knockback are unaffected) and they also don't unstale other moves. Also, fun fact: arrows shot from the bow stale but not when thrown like an item, seems like they become considered as 'item' once they touch the ground. The dmg from a thrown arrow is roughly 3 to 4.2% max but better than the minimum 2.2% from a uncharged and fully staled bow shot (also, same as the bombs, thrown arrows don't unstale other moves).

Don't hesitate if you have anything else for me to test.
You know, looking at the data we've compiled at the data tracker, I'm surprised to see Link doing the best out of the three Links still. It does make me happy to not see him struggle, though...
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
I'm positively surprised too. My initial impression was that YLink would perform way better than Link. After watching a bunch of matches, i think i can safely say that killpower is really a determining factor in Ultimate (compare to speed alone in smash 4) making Link better or equal to YLink imo. Early analysis gave the edge to YLink because they were made with a Smash 4 mindset imo. It's still early to draw definitive conclusions but it sure looks good for our boi so far.

Hey btw, i know you like good gameplay videos, in case you didn't see this match (Ally vs Trevonte): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGSErfSpDXc¸
(The 1st match is one of the craziest i've seen, Ally is truly an explosives artist, very impressive stuff)

I'll take a look at the meta thread for sure.
    Iridium
    Iridium
Yeah, I watched it yesterday. That second game easily had my favorite last stock finish with that genius setup. A shame Ally didn't win the tourney, because I was rooting for him after Fatality lost.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
He had a good run but it seems like Snake is not at his best in every matchups. He's such a tricky character to master. Maybe Ally will have to get out his ''pocket'' Mario more often that he initially thought :P
You know, I was thinking of compiling an Ultimate Link playlist for YT, similar to the big one out there for Smash 4. Is it possible you can direct to any Link tournament footage there if you can, whenever you see any?
    Iridium
    Iridium
Not that I've seen, but I can look here are elsewhere for one. Depends if you're just looking for majors and such.
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Yeah majors are the most likely to produce some good footage they're the most fun to watch imo. I just thought it would be useful to have a calendar, you know for your list and also to help out our new mod in the Link boards (he/she'll create a new video archive to replace my old one, i've offered to help out by posting some new footage when the thread will be ready).
    Iridium
    Iridium
In that case, SmashWiki isn't a bad place to start looking. It should get updated even more when more events are announced.
I watched the Salem footage, and I think he legitimately could end up being the best Ultimate Link so far. Definitely looks like he practiced.

This really makes me wish T hadn't dropped him...
Is your latest profile picture's art style inspired off of Hayao Miyazaki's art style?
Thanks for the follow, followed back, I see you around alot, always nice to see a fellow Link main
    Blade of Evil's Bane
    Blade of Evil's Bane
Thx, i hope we'll see each other around even if the Skull Kid thread will probably slow down (by lack of info i'm guessing) i'm always happy to see Legend of Zelda fans around here. Also yeah, us Link main are a rare breed or maybe it's just an impression cuz we're just silent types like our boy ;)
And, gonna add a follow, because why not? I'm feeling really good today.
This time, did you see the latest Otakuni matches online?
Did we just meet on For Glory? I fought a Link named Blade, and I don't know if it was you. Could be a coincidence.
