Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

I didn't know Richter's a reptile. Huh. Learn something new every day.
Yeah, I had a pet Richter lizard when I was a kid. It was pretty cute.

But whenever I tried to feed it it'd make this weird noise, it kinda sounded like-
DIE CRICKET! YOU DON'T BELONG IN THIS WORLD

Smash Bros? What's a Smash Bros? This is Poke-Boards!

Anyway i'm done discussing Let's Go right now, we've been going off-topic for too long. I think it looks disappointing but i'm willing to give a try, hopefully
Gen 8 lives up to the hype.

So uh...
Which Newcomers that we know of are you most excited for?

For me, it's Inkling :ultinkling:.

I adore Splatoon! It's only existed for three years and it's right up there with Mario for me. Even though it was predictable i'm so glad Inkling is in Smash!
I hope Woomy is a taunt...
Errr...I just wanted the cut characters back, and we got em...I'm glad King K. Rool is in, been wanting him forever, but I knew I was never actually going to play him. Its just closure. Its a Nintendo All-Stars game without DK's famous villain...he needed to get in.

Out of the newcomers we've got? I'm the most happy that K. Rool in, I really wanted Dark Samus (but its just a Samus echo soooo...errrbleh), but no one has me most excited. Satisfied, sure.

Its not about it being its own thing. That's not the issue. Coliseum and XD are great examples that side games that are like the core series can work. Its that they needlessly dumbed it down BECAUSE they feel the games would be too difficult for newcomer players. Pokémon. Difficult. I have seen a kid who was four playing Pokemon Sun. And enjoying it!

Then you got genwunnery, and that's been going on for way too long now. I mean yes. The Anniversary was nice. Please move on. You have other generations that are loved just as much. That's more of a personal gripe, but I ain't the only one singing that song.

And finally... You HAVE to pay for Mew this time. Roadblocks have been made so its the only way to get Mew, and that is a touching reality check, folks. Oh yeah. GF is in full realization that people will slap money down for Pokémon, and they implement this by shoving it in an optional controller. I am REALLY hoping that a future event is released AT THE LEAST.

I'm sorry. The games look cute. Riding Pokémon is awesome. Having a bouncer Gengar at your back 24/7 is straight up bad ass. But I just can't support how they're handling these games.

Edit: Oh right this is a Smash Ultimate topic. My bad.

Let's play a game to get back on topic.

Step 1. Pick your main or a character you like to play as.

Step 2. Give them a buff. Yay!

Step 3. Uh-oh, nothing in life is free. Give them a nerf :(

Step 4. Repeat until you are happy. Be sensible.
Here we Go~

I'll do my two smash 4 mains

:ultzelda:

Buffs: Less cooldown on Nayru's, bigger sweetspots on kicks, Phantom being storeable

Nerfs: Slower Jab, knockback/damage lower on kicks, tighter percentage ratio for elevator to work?

:ultlucina:

Buffs: Dancing blade is back to it's smash 4 startup, jab-fsmash is an actual kill confirm.

Nerfs: jab startup is slower to compensate, lower DB damage?

i have no concept of balance please tell me how badly i broke or ruined my characters thank you :)

Thanks for the kind words, guys. I've seen them all, and they're all awesome in their own way. I suppose I should reveal what's going on...

Tomorrow, my dog Harry is getting put down. That little man's been my buddy for nigh 15 years, and the family knew it was gonna happen eventually, but it still feels like one of my moral support beams has snapped in half, and it reminded me about how much I fear the future, particularly with how you never know what will happen to those you love. But even then, I've got to remember that there's still a ton of other awesome stuff coming in the future; we're getting a new, real Mario Party, we're getting Smash with everybody coming back, we've even got pecking Ridley in the game, for Sakurai's sake!
It's kind of funny. The community went from a hot debate on Pokemon's Switch debut to cheering up a grown-ass man blubbering over losing his dog. That's what I love about you guys; when one of us is feeling down, you set all tension aside and hop to their defense. Thanks for your kind words, I'll be feeling a lot better later down the line.

And I might as well jump on this bandwagon:

Dark Pit: make all his attacks deal more damage and give him and extra jump, but let his attacks launch farther and make him a bit lighter to differentiate him from Pit. That's all that would make me content.

It's Richter for me. I never saw his reveal coming, but now I'm stoked to make him my secondary unless Boshi gets in
Haha, Zinith took the words right out of my mouth. I never expected Richter to make it in, but as of now, unless they reveal someone real crazy, he's definitely gonna be my main.

Anyway my most hyped newcomer is easily :ultridley:. I'm sure you can all figure out why from context clues because unlike Gamefreak I respect everyone's intelligence.

And you can dodge out of the taunt! It’s actually a FUNCTIONAL taunt! That will be so great/annoying. I’m pretty hype.

hmm...

My most hyped newcomer is probably Chrom? I'm a big fan of the fire emblem swordies and i like roy but dislike his weird hilt mechanics. Also chrom is cool.

Dark samus also looks interesting. I like how alien it moves and how it's almost snakelike in how all its rolls and spotdodges are so slithery.

Also Richter because i like whips in fighting games. And Richter looks more interesting to me than simon.

Most excited newcomer for me is K Rool. Ridley was my most wanted, but man Sakurai nailed K Rool so hard. I never knew K Rool in Smash could exceed my hopes.

Just know it's alright if you cry. I've lost pets before - they're family, and losing them hurts worse then any physical pain I've ever experienced. It's natural if you aren't able to truly feel happy for a little while, just know that eventually the pain will pass.

K. Rool looks amazing and I'll definitely enjoy playing him (honestly my sister is SUPER excited for the King, so that makes it even more fun).

But Ridley is perfect. He looks to play exactly how I wanted. I'm never going back.

100% ok to grieve however you want. I was a mess when my two fish died. Raised them from little fellas and they got so big. Pets are a big deal and have such a special place in our hearts!

Glad this community was able to help some too :) There are a lot of great folks here.

BlondeLombax BlondeLombax that's terrible to hear, but 14-15 is a really long time for a dog. I'm sure he had a good life, because it sounds like he was taken care of.

Grief can really make it hard to enjoy the things you like, and it definitely hurts for a while, but you just learn to live with it. Nobody deals with grief just once, after all. You'll get through it, even if it really sucks.

okay guys what if the last unique newcomers were
-Geno
-Isaac
-Incineroar
-Rhythm Heaven Character

would you be happy with the roster
Yeah, I can't be objective in these list games, since there's only one character I really want. :p But, all I could say is if this was the newcomer list, it'd be the first Smash game where all the unique newcomers I've never played their games, half of which I never heard of prior to Ultimate speculation (those 4). So, every character returning is both awesome, but unfortunate as it's more likely there won't be a character I'm personally hyped for. Brawl had Sonic, Smash 4 had Mega Man and Pac-Man. It's tough to think of unique characters to be added that I've played.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I lost my last dog a year ago. It's very hard at first, but you will get through it and remember all the happy times you had with him.

Give R.O.B. a grab range that's up to snuff and not the worst in the game anymore.
Give him mobility on par with Project M.
Reduce damage on both his gyro and lasers.
Return Dthrow back to how it was in 4.
To add onto this for Shulk:

Buffs: Turn Backslash into Monado Purge, a completely new and strong projectile. You could also make it remove the charges of chargeable projectiles and remove the buffs Wii Fit gives to herself on hit.

Nerf: Please don't make me do this.
(Make vision overall a weaker counter, or just turn it into Backslash)

There is no true friend quite like a dog.

Terribly sorry to hear about Harry, but, if it's any consolation, you can know he's leaving happy after 15 years of unending love.

My dog turned 10 this past summer and I freaked out earlier when she hid under my bed and I was convinced I lost her or something. I can't even begin to fathom how hard it will be to one day say goodbye.

Please take care of yourself tomorrow, and remember that you aren't "blubbering".

There is no friend like one simply incapable of judging us. And there is no greater relief from pain than a passing. The balance from the beginning to the end is what makes it worth while. The passing of time is what offers meaning and order to the things that would otherwise be taken for granted and would offer less value to us.

Take your time and feel the pain for your buddy, but also remember that we will all go with him someday, and leave all pain and despair behind.

This is the first I've heard of this. It sounds cliche'd and stupid, but it will get better; time mends all wounds. It'll still hurt every now and again, but that's okay.

Harry would want you to be happy, and he'll be watching you from Good Boi Heaven so keep going. :)

Also, if you need someone to speak with my PMs are always open. That goes for the rest of you too. I prefer my friends happy and alive, so if there's anything I can do please don't hesitate to ask.

Add Skull Kid and Phoenix Wright and you got my realistic dream roster.

Now unrealistic dream roster, on the other hand, is a whole different story...

Is everyone okay?

I just got here and some of the posts seem very emotional, I just wanted to ask if everyone was alright?

I've never had a dog (my family isn't big on pets).
It must be nice having a friend who loves you unconditionally.
Must be nice having a friend at all.

Our full unique lineup becomes:
  • Inklings
  • Ridley
  • Simon Belmont
  • Geno
  • Isaac
  • Incineroar
  • Rhythm Heaven Rep
Bolstered by echoes, this is one of the best newcomer lineups yet.

Now all I can think of right now is my old childhood pet. Those memories used to hurt, but as cheesy as it is to say, they've eventually transformed into something beautiful. I'm actually getting chills just thinking about it. She had been with more for longer then I was able to remember and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say I loved her like a sibling. But I think I'm emotionally stronger from losing her to, and I'm more prepared to deal with future deaths because of it. It's still a horrifying thought, but knowing that I've made it through the death of a loved one once makes me confident I'll be able to deal with it again.

Now I've got to go before I start tearing up myself. Bittersweet tears, that is. But before I go. Just know that whatever happens, you'll make it through it.

Must be nice having a friend at all.
Whoa. Whoa. Watch your friendly face. I’ll be the hell out of your friend.

Just had my dog die not too long ago as well...

Jesus, this is depressing
I'm sorry to hear about yours. Losing a dog is a tragic experience; I lost one two years back when I was in the home stretch of my senior year.
To cheer you up, have a surprisingly half-decent Yoshi I sketched up around that time while I was in my art class. It's nice to share this sort of stuff.
