I am well aware of this. Altho I suck at pretty much every game other than smash, I have kept up somewhat with many goings on with most traditional fighters, and I know at the very least the basics of most games, or at least enough to know what's going on in vids.
I do appreciate your input tho. :)

what characters do you play in 3S then I might consider it.
You might consider it? Comon Tom, you have more balls than that. Accept it man. You challenge Team Hate, why not Foward? You got this.

And yeah Foward, you and me, 3rd Strike MM.

let me get this straight

jtyme has no affiliation with this, RIGHT??
None at all.

This **** is HOT!!
I am DEFINITELY attending one of these!
You hear me?! EUROPEANS are coming, baby!
Awesome! The "international" one is EVO Vegas in August, which I recommend more than any other one (it's the finals, it's vegas, more prizes, more "fun" things added")

I'm so stoked for this I can't contain myself. I'll be going to LA and Vegas for sure, the other ones are too far.

NTSC 1.0 version plz.
Pretty sure we'll use the standard version.

LA and Vegas are good choices.

Either way imma try to attend them all.

Renegade do u think teams would be included? or will it just be singles >_>
Lol... soaking up people's qualifying spots. It's all good.

Right now it's looking singles, but format has not been announced yet. Either way, EVO provides plenty of "Casual" space for consoles, so side tourneys are welcome and encouraged. I'll even run a side tourney if nessesary at East/Worlds.

I'll hopefully make it to one or two of these.
i'm going to atleast 2, i think, cant wait, plank are you taking me to any of these? >___>
I am going t at least 2 of these
If you guys are planning to go to two... I highly recommend going to the closest Evo to you and then going to World final in Vegas. Cuz worlds is where they pull out all the stops. International competition, huge screens, etc.
Now if your goal is to qualify to worlds... then think about how many you want to go to, and which one will be the easiest to qualify in.

As I said, formats have not been announced yet. I am not positive WHAT will be run. GGXX/ was a 3 on 3 event last year. But, I think singles is kind of a given. I've lobbied for both, but we'll see.

But there was a bit of a time crunch last year, and one of the 8 games was mario kart... not to mention tekken and DOA4 had light turnouts. Now you're planning T5DR and adding Smash. It's gonna be hard to run everything as is. Smash sets take longer than almost any game out there, with a maximum of 24 minutes of game time...

Let me repeat:

But there is NOTHING stopping anyone from running a side tourney during any of the EVO events. Crews, teams, low tier, whatever. The only difference would be that it wouldn't be showcased on "finals sunday" and wouldn't recieve the guarunteed moneys at Evo finals. It would get the same amount of money at the other events. (money from entry fees). So... with the people there, why not do it? Every other game will have team tourneys/whatever.

wow wat an unexpected turn of event. MLG loses smash and EVO picks up smash. I think its a fair trade, i was looking forward to a new season of mlg but EVO is something i always wanted to attend since it started SF and MvC games. I cant wait for the EVO East!!! Gonna be Fire and Hopefully I can make the others. :D It kinda sad that MLG has to let smash go this season but i personally think ssbm belong in evo with the fighting games.

So I was wondering, whats the format for this now? do you guys plan on changing the rule set we're use to using or are you going to make up your own variation of it?

I'm sure alot of smashers have been wondering this too since to drastic of a change might not be to good of an idea.

Good call wes. I suck at singles so what's the point of players like me even going if there are no teams?

QFT. I think they should have 1v1 and 2v2. 2v2 is not a side event but a big event of itself. Evo staff are going to have to talk about this very percisely.

Renegade I know evo staff will do their best to please people and I am sure that the 2v2 component will be there officially or not but please understand that this game is entirely different from every fighting game on the planet as it can hold up to 4 players and that aspect is fun (unlike GG isuka). People like Wes, the newlyweds, and others thrive off 2v2. It is when people really shine sometimes.

I wish evo luck and to all those in the EC I Will make sure I run at least one pool to make it fair the alex strife way....I hope to see Da and others there to help as well. Lets make it the best we can.

Dude, i was saying, even if there ISN'T teams officially, there can be one in the Bring your own cosole area.

For East, West, North, South, the prizes would be exactly the same (entry fee based).

Also, you guys will have PLENTY of time to do this. You see Evo runs 1 game at a time.

(this is an example of last year, FORMAT HAS NOT BEEN ANNOUNCED)

So, you show up to EVO East on friday. Friday and Saturday are qualifying pools and semi finals, usually run back to back in each gameto minimize down time. Your game (in this case SSBM) will be assigned a time. Let's say for instance you get the Friday noon slot. Your game will narrow down the ENTIRE FIELD to 8 contestants from 12pm- 3/4 pm on friday.
This is accomplished by having over 32 TV's. CRT's btw.

The rest of your time is free to do as you see fit. Play friendlies, eat, ORGANIZE AND RUN SIDE TOURNEYS. There will be an area of TV's dedicated for Casual use. Also, there was alot of space in the hall, so you could bring your own tv's if you wanted to.

Side note #1(bringing a tv is probably a good idea if you're driving, hotel tv's can be HD, not have A/V, be locked, etc)

Side note to side note#1 Red Rock last year had 42" widescreen HDTV's in every room. Nice, but not for games. But they had 13" Flat panel CRT's in the bathrooms... so everyone played casuals in the restrooms.

Extra Extra note: Sunday is for finals only, there is no casual room on sunday, just tons of seating to watch the finals in each game, back to back, on a huge wall. Good stuff always.

Normally i'm pretty lazy when it comes to posting about things in advance but this sounds pretty amazing. I'll be looking forward to the east event and maybe the others as well seeing as how mlg has lessened their involvement with smash.

The widescreen TVs could play games... it's just that the TVs pull out of the wall when you don't really think they will (we had to get a hotel serviceman to show us how). I know this because that was the first thing I played a Wii on :D

Anywho, I'll likely be coming to North, and probably compete in the GG tourney as well for the heck of it. East is another possibility.

wouldn't it be reverse powershielding if he lets his shield down (by pressing forward) at the last moment though?

food for thought

Omni, I don't think he meant it as in it was impossible to hook a system up to the widescreens, just that no one wanted to play on them due to the scaling lag that CRTs don't have.

actually the lag comes from an HDTV's output being digital and the consoles output being analog. most tv's don't have to change analog into digital, which may only be a split second, but messes up parries and anybody who doesn't play peach.

mofo told me that.

I'm pretty sure that you're wrong. And mofo too. You know those 27" Sony Wegas that MLG uses? Yeah, THOSE are digital TVs. Digital and analog has nothing to do with this. A progressive scan dvd player puts out a digital picture, but that picture's resolution is still 480p, which is the same as the last gen consoles (ps2, cube, etc).

The HDTVs have a native resolution of at least 720p. That means they upscale or downscale whatever signal they're given to fit that. Upscaling a 480 picture to fit 720 is what causes the lag.

EVO Smash Rules

so i guess people havent seen this yet....? if so, then i apologize for reposting, but i was looking for rules for smash at evo and found this.........i guess there will only be doubles? not sure exactly.

http://www.evo2k.com/playerGuide/gamerules.php

EVO2k.com said:
Super Smash Brothers Melee

* Game version: Nintendo Gamecube
* Game Settings: 2 on 2 Teams, VS Melee, 2/3 Games, 4 Stock, 6 Minute Timer
* The stage for game 1 will be selected at random unless both teams can agree on a stage.
* Random select stages: Final Destination, Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, Rainbow Cruise, Dreamland 64, Pokemon Stadium, DK64
* Banned stages: Fountain of Dreams, Mute City, Yoshi's Island (Pipes), Fourside, Hyrule Temple, Flatzone, Brinstar Depths, Icicle Mountain, Big Blue, Mushroom Kingdom 1, Venom, Yoshi's Island 64, and Kongo Jungle.
* No stage may be used twice in a versus battle.
* After the stage has been selected, the winner of the previous game may change characters, but has to pick first.
* Glitches used to stop your opponent from controlling their character or indefinitely freezing them (Mewtwo's Soul Stunner, the Ice Climber freeze glitch), or any glitch or trick that freezes the game or makes it unable to be finished are banned and will result in the immediate forfeit of the entire match.
* Tactics such as Peach's Wallbombing and Jiggly's Rising Pound are allowed as methods of recovery or to maneuver around the stage. Using them (or any similar tactics) to excessively stall a match, such as dropping below levels intentionally and stalling underneath, is banned. If by using one of these tactics, you have put your character in a place to lose a stock by ending the tactic, a judge may force you to stop and lose a life and continue the match short a stock.

Yes, this was just updated a few moments ago. Running a 8 game tournament takes alot of resources. While we would love to do both singles and doubles, we have too many other games to handle.

Every qualifier will have BOYC area, where you can do your own tournaments or face off against other players. But for the official tournament, those will be the rules.

Now if you think something should be changed, please post here in a reasonable and calm manner. We will take all suggestions uinder consideration.

Thanks for your time.

Wait wait >_> This is JUST teams now?

If it's just 1 tournament it should definitly be singles and NOT teams. Singles is the heart and soul of Smash, teams is always a much funner, laid back, slightly less serious tournament... If it's just teams EVO is making a big mistake, ask anyone. It wouldn't take very long running both... They could easily do both and be done in a day. Look at MLG, they ran both tournaments smoothly for the most part.

Youtube's Smash Vid traffic is proof most people care more about singles than teams.
