Q&A Doc General Discussion: Ask and ye shall receive ft. otg and Shroomed!

I haven't fought a falco that doesn't laser lol. I realize like two docs that pill better against me because they actually approached off it.

Like I notice that with bigger stages Flaco lasers more but in smaller stages it's straight to more pressure.

lol its hard to find a falco that doesnt laser. finding a good falco that doesnt laser does not exist. however ur average falco if u (and this is gonna be taken from dogysamichs match up guide but i found it works) just cape some lasers back and if they dont sh laser well duck the bullet. or just even randomly take hits. they will stop lasering cause their afraid/ unsure if the opening created by the laser is really there or they just wont wanna get hit by their own laser.

and i hate using up B to do anything other than recover.....pretty much i hate anything that puts me in a ton of lag (which includes pills)

you don't need to pill a lot if ur in their face comboing them!!!!!
gimps win games tho, once i start gimping more i will be a ton better
i was talkin to lunin a while bak and we both agree i dont normally get kills till 120ish

gotta work on early kills, my edgeguarding blows

Yeah I'm good at gimps. I guess I started working on gimps early on too. Just as soon as I noticed the cape doing weird things...

Like, playing free for all, and I use cape by accident to a falcon recovering... it generated much lulz but I learned that I could do that to anyone. : ]

I just think that I should gimp them before they beat me.



I haven't used up b but I should.

Plus I don't think I use pills well as an approach... or as well as my doc friends.

I don't powershield (I know how to and I have by accident a few times but I don't do that consistently)

Ok sure we cape but that doesn't do much because I always randomly cape and it hits them, they can laser lol.

yea gimping is the ****. its part of the reason i switched from falcon to doc. i love getting gimps and since docs gimp game is so legit i like the idea that even when im down im never out as its alot easier to get clutch gimps with doc then with most chars. but if u dont like pilling what do u do against jiggs and in particular bair spam?

its really great with platforms and even on FD ive done it and havent really been punished for it. i mostly do it against fox and falco and falcon since they stay in hitstun so damm long its a good way to combobreak them and not get punished.

i mean i dont really think lasers force doc to approach. i was always under the impression that lasers were for the falco to approach if he so chooses. he can camp with lasers as well but if they decide to camp with lasers just keep caping that **** back eventually they'll stop camping with lasers and try to approach u. probably behind lasers but since their coming toward u cant just mindlessly cape or else ur gonna get punished. from personal experience if a falco wants to camp me thats fine. it gives me a chance to set the tempo for the match. Even if u choose not to cape his lasers, on stages with platforms its not that hard to get around his lasers. especially on small stages. i can get into my comfort zone and *** that falco up. if i dont approach taht means the falco can set the tempo for the match (which also puts u on the defensive and thats not a good place to be vs falco). after all doc has cgs on falco + gimping falco is not that hard especially since he doesnt have start up frames on his up B.

i played hungrybox at p4 and i didnt use THAT many pills

i jus sneak in uairs and nairs a lot vs puff

and try to catch a bair with a dair too

Against Jiggs I usually pill quite a bit. They help the Doc. vs. Jiggs matchup a lot. Mind-gamed recovery is also extremely helpful vs. chars like Jiggs + Peach who have a lot of edge-guarding control.

Well I would think Peach is more annoying than Jiggs since Peach has more to rely on than just aerials and Rest gimmicks that barely work on Doc in comparison to how well the Rest gimmicks work on other matchups.

Ehh no matter, I'm in no big rush to attend a huge tourney anyway. I'm pretty content on just attending tournies in my region. Gainesville by itself, let alone Florida, has really good players.

Many moves on pro level I can do and Ill give anyone here a run for their money, but I have to ask: exactly what is Doc's timing for wavedash and how do people remember it subconsciously while fighting?

just practice practice practice, knowing how many frames inbetween the jump and L/R button is useless, it's just muscle memory, not something you can read and suddenly know.

no one who plays smash THINKS about their wavedashes, it's just second nature after a while.

Well first let me give you my Scorpion welcome to the Doc boards and welcome to melee:

Wavedashing is really easy once you get the timing consistently.
Just jump off of the ground. As soon as you get off the ground, airdodge towards the ground. A
The timing is simple, just make sure to jump and wait until the character (Doc) lifts off the ground first being trying to airdodge back to the ground. If you try airdodging to soon, you'll probably see your character get stuck in shield or spotdodge. If you airdodge too late, you probably just end up jumping kinda high and airdodging.

So yeah, this is probably the 100th time I've done this, but I'm pretty much finished with Doc now. Yesterday was the first time I busted out my spacies in tournament, and surprise surprise, I did 1000x better. I'm no Doc fan boy, and I doubt anyone actually gives a ****, but I figured I'd just establish it now.

as a big hurrah tho, here are the tourney vids I promised from last week. Feel free to commet and critique, I could really use it. Sadly none of my sets from yesterday were recorded, tho I did go Doc for a few of them:

the falcon matchup is kinda gay IMO

but what i've learned is that....

1.get as much damage as possible off one grab
2.wait it out and never go above falcon
3.DI or SDI out of his combos or ur F*****
4.edgeguard is prob the most important thing...

Like, it took me ALOT of work to get a set of a Falcon that's probably near me level lol. I think he's as risky as me. But still smart.
