I say this a lot and it's probably getting super annoying to hear about from me every 5 seconds, but seriously: why do we never discuss Paula as a potential echo candidate? She is absolute perfect echo material - same body shape, different silhouette, same powers, and comes from a series that probably should be represented more but not to the point of a completely new third fighter.

DK's stage representation in Smash is so weird to me - jungles are only really that heavily featured in 3 of the main DK platformers (DKC, DK64, and DKCR), yet they take up all but one of DK's stages. Why not use the crystal mines? the neon pirate theme park? the bramble maze in the sky? the balloon-filled lava cavern? the pirate ship's stormy mainbrace? the giant beehive? and those are from one game alone! DK is a series that lives and dies on atmosphere so having every DK stage be in a jungle and a majority of the music be either jazzy jungle music or a boss theme makes them seem more like a representation of Donkey Kong merchandise than Donkey Kong itself.

Here's how I would handle a new Yoshi game:

Cut out (no pun intended) the arts and crafts look. I'd personally go for something more Disney or Ghibli-esque.
Bring back tough-but-fair difficulty - I'm not worried about isolating the kid audience, have you seen how much kids go crazy for Cuphead? This would also include giving mellow mode the axe, though wings could come back as a power up.
Expand Yoshi's base moveset beyond just the YI moveset, albeit only slightly. His headbutt fair from Smash could work quite well I feel.
Give the vehicle forms a little more prominence, but make it so any obstacle you can overcome while morphmated you can also tackle in dinosaur form, even if it's a little trickier.
Bring back the Mario 2 and Yoshi's Story casts and have them coexist with the existing Yoshi's Island cast - maybe even have Wart as the villain instead of Kamek. The Story characters would require major redesigns however, given they're very tacky design-wise.
Bring back the Yoshi rescuing system from Woolly World and having multiple babies like in DS. I'd love to add Baby Daisy and Baby Waluigi in some form
Try to have individual stages be memorable for certain non-aesthetic aspects, such as a surplus of a rare enemy or a one-stage-only gimmick.
Reduce the amount of backtracking, especially in castle levels.
Ditch the flutter jump. It can still be animated as Yoshi flapping his legs, but make him more nimble and easy to control when double-jumping
Likely the most potentially controversial change here, but give players control over their eggs' aim rather than having to wait for it to line up.

A character I think would have a really interesting effect on the speculation scene is PaRappa the Rapper. He is, in my eyes, the one character who would most clear as day illustrate "Smash is no longer just about Nintendo." as not only is he owned by Sony with no Nintendo appearances, but there is also a relatively popular Nintendo IP with the same genre and a similar aesthetic to PaRappa. PaRappa would also break a lot of Smash fans out of the console war trance of Nintendo being the "only innovators" and "the only ones who don't make gritty shooters all the time" given how historically significant PtR is to gaming and its cute, silly style.
